  1. They are selling you a contented 1Gbit connection hence the usage clause. If you're fine with that, go ahead.
  2. If you cannot get access to an external NTP server to sync against there are other time sources you can use. Short of asking the physics department to buy an atomic clock you can use a GPS receiver or a radio clock. For example you can build a DCF77 receiver very cheaply. Simple Radio Clock for PC's

  4. Doesn't work like that. If your ISP offers anything other than an unfiltered connection they are responsible for the filtering system working as promised. However schools have differing requirements, eg primary vs secondary vs post 16 as basic examples of this (this is why a 'one size fits all' offsite filtering system is fundamentally flawed). So what they can deliver is only 'best effort' which is far below a lot of schools (unattainable) expectations. The only real solution when faced with this is to do filtering onsite and tailor it to your schools requirements. It's debatable what 'managed' service you would require once you've reached that point though. Also, while we're at it, what about overfiltering? Has anyone considered the other side of this coin?

    Java updates

Removed Java site wide, only the minecraft players noticed.
  6. There's a lot of early PDA/Phone crossover stuff from both Palm and later HP that could be considered a 'smart' phone.
  7. Nokia Communicator 9500 from 2004 fits the bill (minus the touch screen as discussed). Nokia 9500 Communicator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Nokia 9500 Communicator Review | Mobile Phones | CNET UK

    User Tracking

The Easy option would be some classroom 'control' software. I've used ABTutor in the past. Obviously you'll need to pay for this. Easy or Cheap. Your choice.

    User Tracking

free/cheap = Linux + squid proxy w/NTLM auth (there's PHP based log parsers that will make pretty reports of squids log files).
  10. I doubt 'build thicker walls' would be an acceptable solution to pitch to the SMT. And no, Mobile phone signal jammers are illegal.
  11. Well yes and no. Most phones/tablets etc can switch between wifi and mobile with a simple toggle. So, browse on wifi, hit a block, switch to 3g to get blocked content, switch back to wifi when done. An example use case would be. I'm looking for a video on youtube but youtube is blocked. I can use google to find the direct link then switch to 3g to get the actual content. I accept that this requires a little technical proactiveness but I doubt this would be beyond some children in a school to work out and once one has it figured out you might as well assume they all do.
  12. As you acknowledge, you have to compromise somewhere along the scale because 100% is unfeasable. So in your particular situation where LGFL thinks the line for 'good enough' is drawn isn't where you think it should be. This is no longer a technical issue and becomes a policy one. So if you're in a position to make a decision about said policy then do so, otherwise kick it up the management chain.
  13. It imported my feeds from Reader (and syncs back to it). But beyond that it just uses google for login.
  14. Trying out http://www.feedly.com
  15. Crud. I need a replacement for my podcast feeds then. :/ Any ideas?
  16. Have you considered integration? Last time I looked (which was a while ago) I think microsoft itself was developing an integration module for Moodle so it could load some webparts up.
  17. Manufacter or Operator supplied firmware updates are fine (Either OTA or via iTunes, Samsung KIES, etc). 3rd party firmware will void your warranty (Custom ROMs, Jailbreaking iPhones, etc). If you can remove the custom rom and restore the phone back to stock before returning it for warranty repair there shouldn't be any arguments though.
  18. Assuming you can find a fax2email service that will let you port numbers to them. You will have to port all the numbers attached to the ISDN together as a block.
  19. Stuff TPS doesn't cover you for but you can report to someone: Silent calls -> OFCOM Automated Voice Messages (robocalls) -> ICO Overseas telesales -> If the parent company has a UK presence TPS, Otherwise ICO. 'marketing research' calls -> Market Research Society (if the caller is a member otherwise you're out of luck, hello loophole! *cough*) SMS Messages -> Without your consent, ICO. Text Alerts (SMS to a land line) -> Talk to your phone provider.
  20. They never actually checked what sort of number was going onto the lists when people submitted them. My mobile number has been listed on the TPS list for over 18 months. Disclaimer: I work in a call centre and have the TPS database to hand.
  21. Commercial so not directly comparable. ~£1850 per employee. Approx ~£1000 of that is capital. I'd guess the figures would be interesting to you guys though.
  22. Mechanical keyboards, the tension in the springs in a good one will remove eyeballs. If maiming your pupils is not acceptable, have a look at 'waterproof' keyboards, they are obviously sealed units (happy side effect is that you can dishwash your IT rooms keyboards once a term!).
  23. I'm running FreePBX deployments of similar size to you without issue. Assuming you went down such a route, the majority of your costs for such a deployment would be in hardware, mostly the handset costs if you wanted to replace your existing Cisco kit. Bear in mind your 7911 handsets use Cisco's propierty 'skinny' (SCCP) protocol rather than SIP out of the box. If you don't switch them over to use SIP natively you wont be able to use some of the more advanced call features (hold, transfer, forward, etc). 24. Don't tidal barrages trash the local marine environment?
  25. Cyanogen gave me customisable toggles including airplane. Another reason to root and rom your phone.
