Hi all, Trying to sort out an SSL mess with our Exchange 2007 box. When I first built exchange I created a self signed cert because we don't publish email externally. which worked great until it expired a year later. To cut a long story short I have now got a certificate from IPSCA.com , and we now have OWA working correctly on SSL. However, we are still having SSL issues.... I'm not able to sync a HP ipaq with my computer via USB as it returns: The security certificate on the server is not valid. Contact your Exchange Server Administrator or ISP to install a valid certificate on the server. Support Code: 80072f0d Out of Office will not work in Outlook 2007 only in OWA. Autodiscover testing returns a remote certificate name mismatch. On Exchange Best Practise Analyzer, we have a few errors: 1) Certificate has expired - The SSL certificate for https://domain.org 2) Certificate principal mismatch - The principal SSL certificate for https://domain.org does not appear to match the host address. 3) Certificate SAN mismatch - The subject alternative name (SAN) of SSL certificat for the IMAP4 service on server mailserver does not appear to match the host address. Host address: mailserver Current SAN: no alternative name. Our certificate is for domain.local because we don't need to authenticate with domain.org as we only ever authenticate internally. Do we need to get a different certificate? If anyone's got any suggestions they would be gratefully received! Thanks Jenny

I have now solved this problem, I think the driver files on the terminal servers had got corrupted or somehow updated wrongly. I replaced all the driver files beneath C:\Windows\System32\SPOOL\Drivers from our working terminal server over to the two non-working terminal servers, and this sorted the problems. I do agree with you though (Beauduy) that I don't think it's helped that the Laserjet 3600n printers are host based. I too have read through all of the posts on the HP forum. The HP2600n are ok for a single user, but that's it, it doesn't support 64bit so we had to move them out of our classrooms.

Thanks for all the replies, POE is not required, not currently anyway. We have some POE ports on our main switch in the server room, which we don't use. Switches are not really my forte, so I will need to get some advice on the topology of our network, to ensure that what we spend will actually be beneficial and noticeable on the network. Sometimes the network does seem to slow or every so often we get a brief blip where we lose network connectivity for a few seconds, so I want to get these sorted. Thanks, Jenny

I'm looking to replace the rest of our 100base-t switches to 1000base-t, to iron out some bottlenecks and get the network running as fast as possible. Had a quote from our LEA yesterday. 8 x HP ProCurve Switch 3500yl-48G-PWR Intel Edge = £14435.28 (top managed switches 1 for each cabinet) 15 x HP ProCurve Switch 1400-24G = £2,554.35 (unmanaged switches) £400 to install. Total 17k Firstly do you think this is a reasonable price? I could do the unmanaged switches myself but they don't like us to change the managed ones. Also does it make a noticeable amount of difference to users converting all over to 1000 base-t? Every cabinet is connected via fibre backbone. I need to convince SLT to let me have 17k to do this! No not yet, have just been discussing it with our thin client support. We have actually got round the problem for a temporary period by just hosting Office products from 1 terminal server that works. This can't be a permanent solution though. I've also found it's not just the CLJ3600. I'm pretty sure that an Office or Windows update has caused the problem because nothing else has changed on them. If you find anything out, please share it! I will keep this thread up to date too if I solve it.

...more development on the problem. It's just Microsoft Office products (both 2003 and 2007)that refuse to print, tested on wordpad and other programs and they print fine. Have got all Microsoft Office updates still no joy .... agghh....

Really annoying problem this one: This only started a couple of weeks ago. Whenever students click print to either 3 of our HP CLJ 3600n printers (through our 64bit terminal servers) you get "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup" or "No printers are installed" if you click ok sometimes you get a setup default printer, you can then select the mapped printer, but it will then only print out a PCL XL Error. Errors: Subsystem: Kernal, Error: Illegaltag, Operator: 0x80, Position: 3. Sometimes the error is MissingData or IllegalDataValue After extensive testing: Reinstalled the printers. Updated Drivers. Tried old drivers. Hosted it on a different 32bit server. Removed the 64 bit driver from server properties. Installed new 64bit driver. Disabled advanced printing. Changed printer settings to bypass spool and print directly to the printer. Checked and confirmed that this occurs with all users (inc admins), through 64bit servers. Hosted the printer from the 64bit terminal server - selected it locally when printing - this works! The problem is now only occuring when printing from 2 out of our 3 64bit Terminal servers via our 32bit Server 2003 print server now which the students use. Not sure what else to try now. Help! I think a Server update has caused our printer vb script to stop working now, it's the only thing that has changed on our servers but we're getting this error every time: "Error Mapping Printer,462,The remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable" The remote machine is one of our DC's so it is there!!! Can anyone please help at all? Pulling my hair out now... damn scripts!!!!

Hi all, Having a SSL certificate nightmare again! All was good for a year when I implemented the initial certificate. This subsequently ran out so I renewed it, no problem. Now I've realised that the Out of Office isn't working in Outlook 2007. It's fine on OWA and Outlook 2003. So I've been searching the Internet for solutions to this problem which appears to be quite a common one... from what I've read this will be down to either wrong Autodiscover settings or wrong certificate. So I've tried amending the autodiscover settings but to no avail so I'm now trying to redo the certificate. I've removed the certificate and requested a new one using just the mailserver name as the common name because it's only for internal usage, sent it to the CA and OWA is ok with this, goes straight in with no certificate errors. However Outlook 2007 is not! When opening Outlook 2007, a security alert pops up and says "the name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site. Do you want to proceed? Yes / No / View Certificate. Also Out of Office still doesn't work it says the server is unavailable. Have even tried just turning SSL off, but Out of Office still doesn't work! I've tried pretty much everything I can find. Really not sure what else to do to get it working. We have Ericom installed here, and it works brilliantly. Like Ceebster we have no complaints. Only a few teething problems on the way mainly down to terminal server printing but Ericom support is excellent and all problems are solved quickly. Their products are very flexible, if you want full desktop to a TS session or we just use their application zone. Ericom will work closely with you on whatever solution you require. It can also accommodate for multimedia packages which can be difficult to run on thin client in general. Having just been to their first user conference, there's a lot good things to come! I would definitely recommend it.

Thanks I'll have a go with UltraVNC, we have Securus already ... it's to monitor someone who's not doing a lot of work... so they're not necessarily looking a dodgy websites etc... just playing games, and constantly looking at non work related websites! We also don't have a local firewall or webfilter... that's all done at our LEA.

Thanks for the replies so far.... it's not for a student... I have thought about VNC but I was looking more on the lines of something free that would log the activity? ... probably asking for too much!

Is there an easy way to monitor what someone is doing on a computer, without them knowing? .i.e which programs they are using, all Internet sites they're looking at etc.... Is there a piece of software that will do this? Thanks Jenny

No they label it as a Citrix alternative. It runs on Windows Terminal services. It's very flexible, you can run a full desktop session or we just run the Application zone, so students log in to windows xp as usual then they get a full screen window pop up with all apps, when they click on an icon the webconnect server connects them to the load balanced Terminal servers and launches the app, it's very quick. You can also run apps through the App Zone but make it use local resources, without them being installed locally, good for heavy resourceful apps.

We have Ericom installed, I find it very flexible, easy to administer and old clogged up, slow, dying fat clients now work brilliantly. Please feel free to contact me if you want more info.

The right-clicking as "FN-GM" says disable context menus, User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Explorer/"Remove Windows Default Context Menus" We also disable access to the C:\ drive. But found recently students can still get to local C drive through My Pictures in the local My Documents, I think through my Computer on the menu on the left hand side. We redirect My documents to their home drive, but doesn't prevent this. So there may be some extra settings somewhere to lock down. Not really worked out how to get round this but I'm trying changes with their profiles, removing My pictures and My music etc. JD

We've been looking at Frog and LP+. Wasn't impressed really with LP+ but Frog on the other hand were very impressive and I haven't found a bad word about them either. Costs are about £25k to set up Frog and maintenance about £10k a year I think. Worth looking at though if your SLT are prepared to pay for it.

Server load seems fine, I have 3 terminal servers and a separate server to load balance them and there's never more than 30 users on concurrently. Today there's just 3 errors logged of 3 students not getting a printer with the 2147023899 error. I haven't tried starting and stopping the print spooler .... I didn't think this would be relevant because the printers work fine?

We are currently experiencing some problems with our printer script, so if there's anyone that is good with VB scripting can help me at all (as I am not) I would be really grateful! The script is attached. Our students use terminal server to access applications, but a couple of the apps are local, so they need a printer mapped on the terminal server as well as on the local printer (ideally) the terminal server one is most important. The script maps it by the first 3 letters of the computer name on the terminal server session, if it's not a TS then it will look at what OU the computer is in and maps the correct printer locally. Most of the time the students get the printer on TS, but the local printer not so often. I've done a lot of testing on the script for each room, using student accounts and it maps both printers 100%. The script also logs an error if it doesn't map a printer on the terminal server and it supposed to do the same for the local printer too but doesn't. The main errors we've been getting from students is this one: Date,Server,strclname,%CLIENTNAME%,USER,Other Note, Error Num, Error Description 02/03/2009 13:42:17,SVCTS04,LIB,LIBW01,06butg,Error Mapping Printer,-2147023899 ..and one instance of this one, which there is actually a printer called HP3600LIB Date,Server,strclname,%CLIENTNAME%,USER,Other Note, Error Num, Error Description 03/03/2009 13:18:14,SVCTS04,LIB,LIBW02,08dunh,Error Mapping Printer,-2147352567,There is no printer called "\\svcfs02\HP3600LIB". I thought the problem might be down to timing on logon so have changed it so that the script runs from Group Policy, which I think has improved things but not 100%. Not sure what else to do!!! We currently have PMP version 6 with no support. I'm in the process of moving printers over to a new Print server, I've installed PMP6 to the new server however, whenever the service is on students cannot print. I think initially it was because both servers had the service on, so it was complaining about licensing but I've stopped the service on the old print server now and it still doesn't print!! I'm thinking about upgrading to 7 and get support back but will avoid it if I can. I also want to do a lot more with print restrictions and track local printers so maybe another product is better!

My supplier has offered me some Dell laptops at a very reasonable price, with the spec below as apparently they are fazing these out for the new E series. I want to buy some more laptops for our staff, which I think these would be perfectly adequate for but I would usually go with Intel Core 2 duo spec, just a bit tempted with the price! Anyone had any of these or got an opinion on it?
