Just getting to grips with a Server 2008 R2 / Windows 7 network after a summer upgrade and having a lot of these "location is not available" issues at the moment - home folder not mapped on random computers as described, and other network folders seem to be randomly dropped. I don't think I've eradicated the hated "Offline folders" settings so I'm still tracking those down. Any thoughts on this and missing network drives appreciated.

Any recommendations on rolling out a utility like windirstat or similar (preferably as simple as possible) to let students view a breakdown of their disk usage...?

Your screenshots look better than mine for some reason...tried flushing the Google Chrome cache, think it might have improved slightly...still don't like the look of it much though. In your screenshots, IE looks the best, and this is because there's no visible shadow effect (or it's extremely subtle) whereas in the others, it's definitely there and not helping much. I'd be inclined to lose it myself.

The new tabbed forum header looks OK to me in IE (top), degraded in Firefox (middle), and horrible in Chrome (bottom) - some kind of pixellated drop shadows going on. http://www.lemontiger.co.uk/images/misc/edugeek.jpg

+1 for Photorec. If Gimp works for the recovered files, it has batch conversion which might be a timesaver...(often use IrfanView for this).

(...I wrote to them as well, haven't heard back yet - they seem to be about the only other game in town, though I take the lack of prices on the website as a bad sign.) Quota Server used to be a simple and effective solution for controlling the dense and uncooperative user base that represents the typical school. Every time you saved a document, there would be warnings on how much of your quota you'd used up when you were over a certain limit; when you'd exceeded the "hard" limit it would explain that you'd have to delete some files before you could save any more, there was web-based reporting, a no-brainer graphical interface on the server for setting and viewing quotas, etc. I guess I've been spoiled, and I'm sulking at having to go through threads like this in order to figure out how to provide even a basic notification... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2000-2003/87575-disk-quota-not-working.html

I've recently been trying to organise disk quotas via FSRM, ploughing through all the old Edugeek threads on the subject, and it sounds like a PITA, especially if you want notification with Windows XP clients. I can't be doing with this Samba nonsense, so I wrote off for a quote for a piece of software called Northern Technologies Quota Server which I used to use - it was a few hundred quid and worked really well. They've just written back to explain that I would "only require the entry licence" @ £16,600+VAT, annual support costs £2772+VAT. Isn't there a simple, affordable solution to this?

I certainly don't blame people for doing it, though I could imagine it could play on your conscience afterwards...

I had the homepage specified there, but Chrome ignored that and preferred to divert to the sign-in page on launch. So then I followed advice to alter that setting to something else, restart, change back to the homepage, restart. Now Chrome goes to the homepage when you launch the first instance, but if you launch another copy it goes back to the sign-in page again. Someone's messed it up.

I tried tempting users away from the abominable Movie Maker with Premiere Elements 8, but the Media Studies Dept tell me this doesn't like networks at all. Sounds like people have had most luck with Serif from the past comments on this forum.

I spoke too soon - I'm now finding that if I launch Chrome it goes to the correct homepage, but if I then launch it a second time it brings up that "Sign-in" page. Darn, this is getting annoying.
