Would you treat pupils the way you treat support staff
DrBeaker replied to blueday's topic in General Chat
Fair enough - Photoshop it for IT support for me then . Here's my crude attempt The sheer lack of recognition especially during this Covid-19 crisis and how IT support has enabled all this to happen but still get no recognition, is felt by multiple IT people I speak with, especially so in schools. Which ties in with the OP's post as it only worsens how it makes some IT support teams feel - completely un-valued with no support - which ties in with mental health for staff, anxiety, depression, stress etc. Other areas from delivery drivers to binman are being recognised, so why isn't IT? It's a valid question and relevant to the OP's thread. -

Think this.... says a lot OP. Not a mention about IT (the one's who were the enablers of said online learning platforms). -

I read this same one last night. I feel exactly the way the article said. Pretty unappreciated Al. -
Where does that put you in terms of responsibility for hardware etc? E.g. the VM if it has issues, does that cause issues with the payment processing etc and down to you to solve? Our Trust seems to be wanting to go this way but the jist I'm getting says we've got to provide a PC for the kitchen office/server (not SIMs integration that's fine) but we have zero funds for stuff as Cunninghams provided all this as part of the service previously.
-
Hi, to replicate the kitchen setup by Cunningham's - did they have to provide the kitchen PC, tills, reval units and MIS integration or did you have to supply any yourself e.g. the kitchen PC for the catering staff to use?

I think it's like a film, if it's boring people won't engage in it. We've had some recently for 2x hours without even a toilet or drink break scheduled in. That's too long to concentrate. Edit: Ours was a live zoom thing, not pre-recorded.

Ways to tell an IT person needs a great holiday and break from work..... When you misread this... As VLAN!

Don't give them any ideas [emoji12] [emoji33] I've often pondered the same though. It's a thing in America in some places at Universities e.g. having a "cot" in the office.

Yep. I've seen this quote often too. Especially with home-brew type systems developed in-house, then that person who developed it leaves and no-one maintains it or knows how to. That's the risk with these type of systems.

We got a Hue visualiser on trial and staff liked it. With some budget a teacher had, we brought a load of them for our school. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00U7LV402/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hvjbFbY70STE1 Currently one of my jobs for the summer to put them all in the classrooms, but being pushed lower and lower down the list due to other reasons We use the camera app on Windows 8.1 and 10. Works fine for what they need

[video] Happy Days Intro Recreated Using Only Stock Footage

Interesting use of this media. -
WOW! And I'm worried about the full HD screens and having to use 1024 x 768. Glad it's not just me then. We're limited by the technology of our time - no point having full HD TFTs on a 1024 x 768 projector and a 4:3 smartboard.

RM CC4 Smart Build instructions
DrBeaker replied to martinpage23's topic in Network and Classroom Management
If you contact RM they should be able to help you with this. We're still an RM school in the Midlands and they've been fab with us. Worked with us on new hardware, drivers etc that haven't been purchased from them. Some fantastic engineers who really know their stuff too -
Who is responsible for the PC hardware then? Yourselves by the sounds of it? My concern would be the sudden shift to make IT look after any hardware issues.
-
Hi, Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about this? Thanks
-
Sorry I don't mean the tills e.g. with Cunninghams - they have the reval units, tills and catering PC for them to use in the office with the server all of which are supported and maintained by Cunninghams themselves. Do LiveRegister do the same thing, with the same setup - as we've been told we have to provide our own PC for the kitchen staff to use.
-
Our SIMs support team have told me the Summer one will do the spring one but I've got a couple of patches that need installing before.
-
Does LiveRegister provide the IT equipment PC for the catering staff to use or do you provide it yourself? E.g. Cunninghams provided and looked after the catering PC not us do LiveRegister do the same?
-
After still dealing with these as of 2015 and some in 2020... Yes I can.

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
DrBeaker replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
For me it's that IT have been expected to carry on working as normal to support the teachers, students and parents 5x days a week, whilst the admin staff haven't been furloughed, but haven't been doing any work at home either. Especially so when some of them were given school equipment to allow them to work from home. I.e. our finance team and several members of admin and teaching staff. E.g. I got asked to contact parents by SLT and said no. That's why we have 5x staff on the pastoral team to do that. Our MAT IT lead is in agreement with me. Both myself and the school business manager feel this way and have made it clear how we feel on this. Which is why I have no sympathy for the ones who've told me they've enjoyed the lockdown and had chance to sort out their loft, garage and paint the house etc. Even now I'm in pretty much 5x days a week the admin are only doing 1x day a week. So that means if finance aren't in on the I need to order something, I have to wait a week for it to be done (despite them having kit to work from home). -
Ditto. This is the current problem we have on a Brother 6050 in an IT suite that is end of life. It's been abused by certain faculties. But that's what's Papercut reporting is also for. It's a bit different for IT staff like me who print once in a blue moon. But for others who regularly print hundreds of pages of documents, well that's what we have the proper heavy-duty copiers for. Also the same ones who don't refill the paper tray and don't report faults when it doesn't work.

Same as when I questioned about queues in the reception area causing problems, I was told "we don't have queues in reception so that's not a problem". What do we get in reception in the mornings.... Queues of staff waiting to login behind visitors who have their photo taken with Inventry. So for accuracy of timekeeping etc it's bit unfair to judge staff on that. But what do we know eh?
-
If you've got time I'm happy to have a call/Teams call about my experience with them mate if you want? We spent about £2.5K back in 2016 on replacement kit getting all our Interwrite boards working and they were about £250 a kit as they supplied it all in a kit back then. It finally got enough attention in 2016, that none of them had worked since before I started in 2013 to give us enough time, focus and budget to get it all sorted which we did. I was quite pleased with the outcome. Whether they actually used the tech afterwards, was up to the teachers and SLT.

I raised a very very similar question with staff double-swiping when we've had ours installed..... I'm still waiting for an answer. Especially if it's logging door access etc damm well I'm not letting someone in using my card. That's bad security otherwise.
