So far the thread has only been considering the disater recovry situation of backup and recvoery for the whole database. The SharePoint specific backup soltuions from the major vendors also do granular (i.e. single filel) recovery. This artilce pdf from Windows ITPro looks at some of the options availible.

If there is a DNS entry for Computer2 in the DNS server used by Computer1 then that's why the ping fails because it's looking for Computer2 in the 192.16.1.0 subnet. Mark is right you should define your subnets more carefully. Use for the school 192.168.0.0 and 172.16.0.0 for the WIFI link. That way it' s easier to see where the packet data to be sent depending on whether each machine is talking to its own LAN or across the WIFi link. Set the IPs on the WiFI cards to eb something like Computer 1 172.16.1.1 sm (255.255.255.0) and Computer 172.16.1.2 same sm

It looks like both computer 1 and 2 are using their own WiFi IPs are their DNS and default gateway. As the IPs are statically set they will not be known to the DNS server whether is is on the DC or the SmoothWall box. Either use the IP address UNC e.g. NET USE \\192.168.100.1\ShareName$ or put entry 192.168.100.2 Computer1 in the HOSTS file of the Computer2 i.e. C:\WINNT\System32\drivers\ETC\HOSTS

As it's P2P either use the IP addresses directly or add the names in the HOSTS file of ech machine.

The question about the firewall is because the firewall has to have an exception for file sharing either for the specific IP of the computer acting as the client. The server service is background process which implements file sharing on the computer hosting the share. If you're using the WIFI link for remote admin, I hope the link is encryted.

I did think about Wikis but they have the same problem as V/MLEs unless you use Sharepoint Server/Services you loose a lot of the benefit of the Windows Server. Wiki's are also more of free for all which might not be appropritae in a number of cases.

I know know Moodle can do AD lookup for user authentication but WAMP looks like too much bother. @Alan-D There are two problems with that suggestion. 1> it only applies to Office files. What about PDFs? 2> Not very admin friendly: what happends if teacher forgets password. Doesn't prevent 'accidental' deletion.

OK a little clarification, I talking about allowing non technical staff to set NTFS permissions on file and folders residing on network shares. I know that only server administrators can set share permissions. A teacher may want to customise permissions on a particular folder. In order to do this they have to remove inherited permssions. The problem with this is that they won't realise that they have to restore full permissions for administrators and system. This means that backups won't get done as the backup service account is likely to run as domain admin or local system. Ditto shadow copy and probably a lot of goodstuff in R2. So the question is, is allowing users to set NTFS permissions just too risky?

Well I suppose it would be possible to write a script to suspend the accounts in AD. The main problem is checking that the machines are updated or not, unless the idea is to get a human to visually inspect the lapotp.

My understanding is that by default computers on a Windows domain have to log in every 30 days or the account is suspended. I wonder if it is possible to reduce the time window.

There are two cheepo options: #1 (cost free) use remote to change input source to RCA or s-Video This is only really an option for short periods. #2 buy a poor man's KVM (they look like the old fashioned printer switch boxes). When the teacher need's privacy they simply switch to the second output which won't be connected to anything.
