  1. ...off to The Tower with you! BTW James Blunt fans don't look at this.
  2. I can imagine the scene. Scottish instructor, staring down his students " This is a simple domestic iron iron board. In the hands of your mum a tool for crisp shirts. In the hands of service man, an implement of death"
  3. Yeah remember what Prince William had to take with him to Sandhurst. Though I suppose if they had Jackie Chan as their fight instructor then an ironing board could be quite deadly.
  4. ROFLMAO!!!!!!!! It's like the scene in Crocodile Dundee when a mugger pulls a knife on Mick Dundee. "Ah mate that's not a knife. This a knife". Dundee pulls out machete from back of jeans.
  5. Geeks who like real housekeeping as well as housekeeping their networks take a look at this and that 8)
  6. There's a slight confusion here. The MSC file only stores the layout of the management console. The console is only a front end. It does not store the the policy data. I know you can create and share admin template files between machines but I am not sure about security policies. Don't you have Active Directory? That's the real solution for what you want to do. *edited Saturday morning to insert punctuation after Friday night had worn off*
  7. I've just been watching "50 Greatest One Hit Wonders" on Channel 4. Are we really supposed to believe that Bez from the Happy Mondays has such a perfect recollection of the music videos from the past 30 years . And if anybody's interested, the winner was "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas. Ah well ...time for bed.
  8. I made lof posts today. Apologies to others for scrolling out their topics but When the muse comes I just gotta to post
  9. There's been alot of coverage on what to do for antivirus solutions. What do you do for anti spyware in the school environment? Do you include aniti spywre software in your standard builds? If so do you just have the one app or more than one. Do you go for free apps(e.g. SpyBot, AdWare, MS AntiSpyware Beta) or do you subscribe to a payed-for service like Symantec? What do you do for teacher laptops other than just pray?
  10. It seems there's more and more educational apps requiring an SQL database these days usually MSDE. Obviously budgets may mean that you can just bring on-line another server every time the ICT Coordinator buys a new app. Do you host more than one on the same server. Has anybody attemped to install an app on a server where WSUS is already installed. WSUS uses WMSDE which a special version of MSDE without the perofmance restrictions but limited to certain MS server apps. This means an app from another company can't just grab another instance. This is to be expected as Microsoosft aren't going to kill the SQL Server 2000/5 golden goose. Can you have WMSDE and vanilla MSDE installed on the same server?
  11. Just wondering if there is a way of providing a longer of list of recent forum posts. If front page real estate is at a premium then why not use the method they have on other sites (e.g. OS News) a link to to seperate page with a longer list.
  12. Well exam time will soon be with us. What provision do folks here provide for pratical part of GCSE and A-Level ICT/Computer Studies. Do you have networked or standalone stations? What kind of seating arrangements do you have? What printing setup do use. The usaual pratice where I am is to have networked stations to give us flexibility in seating and printing. For security the stations run in a dracionian kiosk mode. No MySpace on exam day As well the summer examniations do you have to provide for other testing on rollig basis during the year: C&G, CLAIT, EDCL etc?

    msn - again!

That would be the ultimate option but ITWitch's requirements were quite specific: On the other hand if there is a spare base unit about the place you can always set up CensortNet or SmoothWall+Dansguardian Hmmm ...The words sledge hammer and nut suddenly come to mind

    msn - again!

Hmm domestic context. Windows 98 or XP? The simple thing to do would be to buy CyberPatrol or NetNanny. They have programable time of day depedant surfing restrictions. If you have XP and are feeling more adventurous, you can use the task scheduler to run a script which routes the deprecated site to oblivion or edit HOSTS on the fly
  15. Do you have to RDP/VNC or SSH in from home or are you that good that things can wait between visits?
  16. Strict Name Checking is on default even on Windows 2003. Are there any security concerns about turning it off? Surely securing the DNS server and disabling unnecessary services and ports any SMB servers should be more important. Duplication of shares from server to server is only the start. In many environments you also have to think about duplicating any queue managment software (Pcounter, PMS etc).
  17. I know you can make a print devices redundant by puting them in printer pool. What I want to know if there is some kind of DFS technique to make a printer UNC independant of the server the print queue is actually hosted on.
  18. As eduGeeks regulary have to translate some piece of poorly made crud into something like what the sales rep promised SMT it would be, just thought you enjoy the reverse motivation posters at despair.com Depending on your screen size you may need to scroll down a bit to see them. There are a few duff ones but among my favourites are achievement, retirement, sacrifice and wishes.
  19. Yeah some of the older Image editors had a habit of trying to grab graphic file associations every time they were run. Of course Limited User can't change Class Root (HKCR) as well as HKLM noted above hence lots of nice error boxes. My favourite was Microsoft Photo Editor which came with Office 2000. Who'd thought Microsoft wouldn't follow their own Logo standards. It took until Office XP for them acquire a taste for their own dog food
  20. A slight veriation on the DR theme does anybody know what if anything staff can take with them if they change jobs?
  21. GPO+NSM+Securus >= (Ranger | RM CC) Discuss Pidgeons.members.insert(Cat); self.location := DISTANCE_SAFE;
  22. Please tell me how! It's driving me mad. I have tried everything but I can;t workout why there should be difference between automatic updates running through on-site squid and through direct connection. Manual updates through relevant websites work normally.
  23. Surprised to see the number of younglings going straight into the world of work. Whatever happened to the time honoured rite of three years spent slacking at the tax payers expense. Oh yeah tuition fees I know that many people complain about the relavance of what is taught on many uni comp sci courses but there is something to be said for the broader context they give.
  24. Which PC control software do people here use and which do they recommend? Ranger looks good but seems to muck about with Active Directory /me shivers.
  25. Can people say which VLE they use and why? Moodle seems to be very popular but oher than being free in both senses, is it really the best one on the market.
