£5000??? You've been stitched up mate! Don't you find it interesting that the alleged 25% of people who are losing money seems to be a lot greater than the supposed 45% who are gaining? To be fair our Head is being very supportive to everyone and is intending to fight all the cuts!

Being the cynic that I am, I can see that our Councillors will pass this without a thought. Now just try suggesting that teachers take a pay cut..........

I've heard that all network managers in Staffs are having a pay cut - over 25% or so I believe. I'm 'lucky' as I'm 'just a technician' so my pay hasn't changed. Makes me really want promotion though - not! On the Council's website, it states that 45% of staff will get pay increases, 30% will stay the same and 25% will decrease. From what I can tell in my school that is nowhere near right. I understand that our support assistants have had their pay reduced to that of the cleaners! From the local newspaper A great exercise in keeping expertise in place and keeping your staff happy!

We had some laptops running both ActivStudio 1 & 2 side by side for a while no probs. I believe ActivStudio 2 & the primary version will run side by side as well. We also have a variety of different versions of the drivers installed (if it ain't broke...) which work on the different versions of the boards.

Doh - I think the heat's getting to me (only 30 deg C in my cupboard this morning!). Just set it to use DHCP rather than the manual settings I put in, and hey presto, everything works properly :oops: Thanks all anyway - I'm going for a lie down........

We've finally managed to get shot of our RM C2.4 system and rather than just junk the server, I've decided to put it to use. I've reinstalled Windows NT4 server and updated it up to SP6a. The problem is, I can't get it on the internet! The server will see the other machines on the network and they can see it, but it won't see the net. I've updated to IE6 and the proxy settings are correct. Anyone got any thoughts to what I've missed? Ta

We've got quite a few of them and to be honest, they can't be faulted. I can see that they could be a pain if they go wrong and you don't have a service contract with RM.

It's interesting to realise quite how reliant we are on the internet these days. Yesterday, I came in to find our net connection was down. It was fasenating to see the number of people who came to me as they needed to know when the net would be back. Lessons needed to be rethought, information had to be faxed over from our other site 6 miles away and a few dial ups had to be set up so important e-mails could be read and EMA payments could be processed. We got the connection back at lunchtime today, but it does make you think how everthing grinds to a halt without the net!! :!:

Has anyone tried this yet? Is it as robust and good at catching nasties as the existing firewall, AV & anti spyware packages out there?

Just downloading it now. But, it makes me think, are any schools actually going to buy it or for that matter need it? We still use Office XP, which is fine for our needs. The pupils don't need anything more complicated. To be honest, we could probably get by on Office 97! :-k

Try looking at http://distrowatch.com/ This lists all the Linux distros and gives a breakdown on what packages come with which distro. For a live CD you could do no worse than Knoppix.

So do I, but presumably as it uses the IE engine, the same problems will occur?! The IE plug in to Firefox is a great idea, although it can be a touch 'cranky' at times

Trouble with all this is that MS are in danger of losing a lot of credibility by saying it'll be available on one date, then another, then another, oo it's not quite ready yet, the dog ate it! etc. The other point is that I can't see the need for Vista at the mo. XP is running on my machines quite nicely thank you. It's not like it was going from 98 / ME to XP.

Dunno about that, I suspect that sales would be down. BUT, when Vista is released and if there is a free upgrade, you can be sure we are going to get a lot of extra visitors saying 'I had this PC for Christmas and I've got this Vista thingy - what do I do????'
