I've just had two 250Gb Western Digital hard drives fail on me in the space of around 2 months . Both were bought new in August 2005. I've decided to replace them with new Seagate ones. What does everyone else use and recommend?

If I remember my trading standard law correctly, then items are guaranteed to be fit for purpose and should last a reasonable time. Two years for a DVD recorder doesn't seem a reasonable time to me. As promised, from Jim Savage - 'The County Council are the employer of staff in community schools, and heads and governors are expected to adopt the locally agreed pay structure. The Governors can therefore propose the grade for the post, but the CC has a say in this because the CC as the employer holds the liability for any equal pay issues. Because of this we are doing some work to develop a template approach for standard JD/PS for admin and clerical roles, on top of a similar approach already in place for TA/HLTA roles that will mean an easier local management access into and management of JE and recruitment/grade setting. Note, this does not change the evaluation for roles, but merely 'package' it up so it is easier to manage locally. Foundation, Aided and Trust Schools, the CC is not the employer. These Chairs of Governors are the employer and have more choice on whether to use the CC pay structure or not. If they choose not to then they will independently need to ensure they pay environment is equal pay compliant, and will likely have to negotiate with the trade unions on this. The diocese has advised their schools to adopt the proposals, as I understand it. If a Community Schools does not like the proposals then it can apply to become a Trust school. A number have said they intend to, but likely will be waiting to see the decision by Cabinet next week on this.'

Not quite sure about taking them to court, but he is being exceptionally supportive. The School is looking at adjusting the job descriptions and is helping with the appeals process. Indeed Radio Stoke were in here on Friday doing interviews!

I'm not sure if it's law yet, but there is a proposed change to the copyright law saying that if you own audio or video on one form of media, you can copy it to another form of media for your own personal use e.g. ripping a CD to put on your MP3 player. As the law stands, it is illegal to put songs on your MP3 player!

On my rather elderly HP laptop, I'm having a problem with svchost.exe running at nearly 100%. This, of course, means that everything else grinds to a halt. I've only recently wiped it and freshly installed everything. It's running XP Home SP2. Any suggestions?

@ Beeswax - to be honest I don't think Becta can or even would actually recommend a VLE as they can't show favouritism. If money was not an issue, what would people go for? Would it automatically be Moodle?

Does anyone know if Moodle complies completely with Becta's Learning platform technical specifications and Learning platform functional requirements that were published in May and June of this year? Also, what, if any, are the know security risks with Moodle? Do you have to know .php inside out to fix them? Cheers
