If they do release in January, there is going to be a lot of upset people who bought PCs at Christmas with XP on, only to find their nice new shiny PC is out of date!

Just seen this article on the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4831374.stm Vista has now been put back to January next year. I did think that later this year was being optomistic!

We had ours a couple of weeks ago and both of us IT support staff and the IT teachers had a half hour meeting with one of the inspectors. Basically we were just blowing our own trumpets, and saying a lot of the IT success is down to IT support! Having said that the whole school came out as Outstanding! Everyone is well chuffed! More digression! The computer that was destroyed at the end of the war was called Colossus. There is a project to rebuild one from the known specs and what people can remember. See http://www.codesandciphers.org.uk/lorenz/rebuild.htm As well as the Colossus rebuild there are to rebuild the Bombes and Heath Robinson machines that were also used at Bletchley Park to crack encrypted messages.

Can't speak for the vanilla network, but the speed sounds about right for a CC3 one.

This sort of thing REALLY annoys me. We were broken in to 4 times in the summer. Myself and a colleague actually caught 2 'people' (term used loosely) getting away with two projectors. We decided against stopping them when threatened with being stabbed! What really hacked me off was that we had two bikes stolen. These cost a lot of money as there were designed for the specific needs of two pupils (we are a special needs school) and were of no use to anyone else. Grrrrrrrrrr :x

I'd have to agree with the points made by TechMonkey. The point about 3rd world support is just offensive - please stop it. Building a machine can take a while, not too sure about 2 hours, but who cares? Once the build disk is removed then it gets on with itself. No worries! There are a lot of restrictions on CC3, but this is a good thing. It stops everyone making a complete pigs ear of the PCs. Especially people like me, who before I was an IT tech, would have loved to 'play'. RM products work in some situations and not in others. See the Linux / Windows / Mac debate! BUT, as far as I'm concerned, with only having knowledge about RM networks, they work and are reliable (saying that one of my servers will now fall over within 5 minutes of posting this ). We just need to get out of the mindset that RM must = BAD.

Very true, except I suspect if you tried to go down the non RM route in Staffs, it wouldn't go down too well. Ejitu has gone downhill since it became Staffs IT.

I think RM do get a bad press just for being RM. As I said before, I'm quite happy with the set up I have here, but then I don't have any experence of any other way of doing things, nor am I likely to as our LEA only uses RM.

I'm interested to hear people's opinions about RM. But not the usual 'RM are.....(insert insult of choice here)'. About two years ago, I took on as part of my job some IT technician duties (the rest of the time I was doing Science & D & T - small school!). At the time I was fairly proficient at doing things on stand alone PCs, but with no real knowledge of running a network of any kind. Our network is an RM CC3 on with a few 2.4 stations still around. When I started, my views on RM were not too favourable and were based on the fact that we had some horrible RM machines at my school and everyone else I knew was then using BBC Bs! This was 'cough' years ago! Two years on and I'm now a virtually full time IT technician and feel I can get our network to do most of the things I want and sort any problems that occur. Most of what I know is self taught with help from my colleague and reading up about stuff from RM. I find our network is generally stable and fault free (with the odd blip here and there) and easy to run. I find that the equipment they supply, albeit on the pricey side, is reliable and does the job that the School needs it to do (see the RM One mobile review). So, apart from pricing, what do people think? I know that despite my initial reservations, I am happy with what we've got (Connect 2.4 excepted).

I think I will shut everything down over the hols. @Michael although I realise that the servers, switches etc. are designed to be left on all the time, I can't see the point of leaving them all on when nothing is going to be used for nearly 2 weeks. Seems a huge waste of power!

As from Wednesday there will be no one in the school for two weeks (except me on a couple of days ), it seems rather wasteful having both our servers and all the network switches etc. left turned on all the time. So I am intending to turn everything off! All our e-mail is handled on a server at our other site, so this isn't a problem, I'm doing a full back up and everything will be turned back on before the rest of the staff and pupils are back. Does anyone else do this? If you do, what, if any, problems have you encountered when turning everything back on? Cheers

The School I work at is Special Needs and to be honest, I've not seen any free / open source stuff at all. In fact, software for special needs tends to be even more expensive than normal! The main stuff we use for kids with learning difficulties is from Crick Soft (Clicker etc.) http://www.cricksoft.com/uk/, but it's not free. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Nope! There is no sign of Newtware in the card's properties. I signed in as the admin in safe mode and it's just nowhere to be seen, yet it's 'there'!

I've been given an HP, Win XP laptop to fix from one of the local Primary Schools. Even though it hasn't got a recovery disk, I've got it working again as to wipe it would be a pain! Trouble is I cant get the Welcome Screen to come up. In the user accounts settings in the control panel it won't let me change the settings as 'Client Services for NetWare has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching'. Netware isn't installed anyware on the PC as far as I can see and I've tried to change the settings in the regisrty, but to no avail. Has anyone any idea, or do I need to wipe it and start afresh? I need to have the Welcome screen as it's for kids from 5 upwards. Cheers Nick

Anyone been able to get this to work? When I get to the validate stage I just get an unspecified error. If I validate Windows normally, the validation works, but not the install.
