from the MS website try uninstalling all the usb host controllers and rebooting the pc??? EDIT:just seen your update, did you only unistall the one usb host controller? if not it's worth doing them all... or reinstall the latest chipset drivers??

the computer in question is still in bits.... so there may be something i find out later doesn't work. but i pressed the power and the light came on and things started spinning... haha.
