Are there multiple Java versions in Add/Remove programs or multiple folders in the Program Files/Java directory? You may need to remove these first.

For someone with little or no experience of Linux, the best distro to start with is Ubuntu. Ubuntu has a large community and there are many people on this forum who use Ubuntu. Once you become more confident using Linux, you can try other distros which may suit your needs better. To get you started, have a look at these: Ubuntu Pocket Guide Ubuntu 8.04 Server Guide Fedora is a good distro, but it isn't as easy and friendly as other distros (I wouldn't recommend it as your first distro). If you were to go the Fedora/Red Hat route, CentOS makes a better server.

I admire your perseverance with Xandros. Many people would have given up long ago. Unfortunately the version of Xandros that is already installed on the EeePC doesn't fully support all the hardware. You are probably better off with one of the community Linux Distros that have been specifically created for the EeePC. Ubuntu Eee, eeeXubuntu, Eeedora, Pupeee & Cruncheee all work "out of the box".

We have been using OpenOffice and OpenDocument for the last 2 years. It is easy to do if you aren't already locked-in to technologies like Exchange, VB, SIMS or some of the proprietary VLEs.

Where else would they go? They're not going to be running applications from the command line, are they?? Any shortcuts using this would have to be in the All Users profile to avoid setting it for each user.

Add --no-qt-privacy-ask after the VLC executable file. (e.g. In Windows it would be vlc.exe --no-qt-privacy-ask.) I thought so! I had a similar problem on Friday with two computers that would not load anything in a web browser. We also use AVG 8.0 Network Edition. I spent ages trying to work out why. I still don't understand why it only affected those 2. Other computers had the latest MS and AVG updates before those computers. You could change the permissions on the folder to be read only. I make it clear to the staff that their Windows profiles are not backed-up and they should be using the network shares provided which are backed-up. If they choose to save important files in their profile and the files are deleted, they are responsible for losing those files.
