I won't be running it for a while! I know what these upgrades are like, will wait for some unfortunately soul to upgrade and find all the bugs for us. I've kept my eye on Supportnet for past few weeks and havent seen any news or updates saying that it was due. Don't they usually provide a rough idea of when it's due and release the Release Notes before they make it available?

Just had an email saying that SIMS 2014 Spring has been released and is now available... Would have nice to have some prior notice of such release.

I think that the whole 'geek/nerd' stereotype has changed in recent years. Some stuff (like gaming for example) has become slightly more acceptable and less 'nerdy'. If I were to categorise: Nerdside... - I love to bury my nose in a good comic book (slowly building up a collection!) - Mad on photography, that doesn't mean I'm any good but I do love it - Console and PC Gamer and have been for years - I wear specs (surely still a must for 'nerds'?) - Love gadgets!! Notso Nerdy - Big gym nut, borderline unhealthy obsession - Rugby player when not injured - Love cars! Tinkering, driving etc. I do what makes me happy!

A very quick Google points to a permissions issue between the account running the SQL Server (Network Service etc) and the Data Folder where the actual database is held. Suggested resolution: Check what account is running the SQL service (In local services it will say in the right hand column next to the SQL service) Browse to the location of your SQL server installation. Will be in Program Files or Program Files (x86), Microsoft SQL Server, MSSQL.10.OF2-SIM, MSSQL then right click the Data folder, Properties, Security then make sure the account running SQL (i.e. local Service etc) has Full Control of this folder. Cannot open the attachment unfortunately, it says 'Invalid Attachment Specified'. I presume it's an error message, what does it say?

Agree with the above. Potential for the SQL service to have been stopped? This would also cause the same error. Have a look at the Local Services on the machine running the SIMS database, check that the service called SQL Server (OF2-SIMS) is running.

By redeploy do you mean going to Deployment History, finding the Discover release and then hitting Deploy?! If so, that will only run for those original in your DE at the time of the original deployment. To pick up new machines, go back through Manage Updates and re-download (if required) and then Deploy from there. I believe that should pick up all the Discover Clients in your DE.

To be honest, it wasn't a particularly amusing reply but being late on a Friday afternoon, it was the wittiest thing I could come up when pushed! lol On a side note, I think we could do with a dedicated Gym thread...

Self-proclaimed gym nut here! Currently eating my final work meal of the day (Mexican rice and chicken breast nom!) Squats and straight leg deadlift are my two favourite leg exercise. Couple of good sets of those and you will be walking around like John Wayne for days. Not a 'Gym Buddy' guy though. Gym is my time, the only part of the day where i don't have to talk or listen to anyone. Headphones in, music on and block out the world for an hour. Highlight of my day.

Agreed it's not massively hot, it is lovely stuff though. I purchased two big (1 litre?!) bottles of the regular Franks from Costco for about £5. Goes on literally everything!

Unfortunately generally the only advice given is to make a copy of your live data and use that. As you correctly stated, as you're not part of the LEA then you aren't allowed access to Waters Edge. It's essentially because we (as an LA Support team) pay for the development and the privilege to use the Test data and you guys as a school, do not. There's a thread all about it on here somewhere. This! Gym, Gym, Gym, Gym! Or at least some sort of exercise as others have suggested. I'm 24, no kids etc and I used to really struggle as well but forcing myself to get up and hit the gym before work has really helped. I get up at about 7, gf drops me at gym for 7:30ish, gym for about 1 hour and then walk to work, quick shower at work (we are fortunate enough to have onsite facilities) and be at my desk wide-eyed and ready to go for 9. Honestly, I can't recommend morning exercise enough!

Panasonic 3do! Beast of a games console back in the day. I was only a nipper when we got it, my mom won it on the Washing Line quiz/competition thing they used to do on the Big Breakfast. Released in about 1992 I think for about £500 over here. It was a silly expensive thing. The best part though was the 3.5mm headphone jack built into the controller with volume control, a feature we are just now getting on the ps4...

Not sure about this specifically but most problems with text & Icon Size within SIMS are usually caused by the DPI settings of the local machine. If Windows 7 Machine: Right click desktop > 'Screen Resolution' > 'Make Text and other items larger or smaller' > Set to 'Smaller - 100% (Default) Alternatively if you do want a higher DPI i.e. 150% for larger text/icons etc, follow the route above and choose your size, then click 'Select custom text size (DPI)' on the left and untick the 'Use Windows XP style DPI scaling'. This will enable you to have larger fonts etc without the scaling. This also enables you to have a larger DPI without breaking the Census module!

We had a COM error on one of out servers. Never managed to figure out what was causing it though. I ended up just installing the Agent manually which sorted it out.

Yep! Sometimes it proves useful having it this way, other times I regret it and wish we had set it up differently i.e. separate S3 environments. At the moment it's useful as we are currently in the process of re-imaging all our SIMS machines to Windows 7 so having a central S3 server where I can remove and re-add machines to S3 for all schools is very useful (saves me from having to hop from server to server). Upgrade time however is a very different story... Realistically if we were to go back and do it all again, I would probably opt for separate S3 environments but hey, you live and you learn!

Aha smarty pants!!! The problem with that for us is we generally deploy to about 10 schools at a time so it's a right pain to access the re-deployment screen as it takes forever to load!

Don't the agents have specific ID's? Surely if you were to put the Agent within an image, they would all have the same GUID's? Which wouldn't work. Am I being stupid or is that about right?

Pretty much the same as you do for the workstations but instead of removing the agent, just remove the server from the list of Workstation Target Definitions within Solus3. So remove Server from Workstations, rename the SIMS.net folder then re-add the Server as a Workstation. This should do the trick. If it doesn't start automatically, click Get Target Version from Agents screen. If still not picking it up, restart the S3 service on the server. Bish Bash Bosh - job done.

Hi folks, We, at the LA, have about 60 schools on our network which we manage via SOLUS3. Due to some of S3's quirks I decided to make a spreadsheet to help manage the upkeep of SIMS and thought it might be worth sharing some of the VB/Batch files with you guys. It doesn't do anything amazing and most can be done manually or using other software. Also some of the VB etc is messy!! It was a learning experience for me so I'm sure it could have been made a lot more streamline but I did what i could with my limited knowledge (and Google - lots of Google!). Here's how the spreadsheet looks: Over here all our machines are badge numbers stuck to the front of the machine. The badge number is an abbreviated version of the computer name. The spreadsheet has a separate worksheet that contains all of the badge numbers and computer names which is where the Combobox gets it's data from. Grab the badge number from the user and then hit the required button: Add: Allows you to add new machine to spreadsheet via badge number. Ping!: Pinched this code off someone else but checks if machine is online and enters result into the status field. Details: Displays the machine OS, Microsoft Office version and SIMS version. C Drive: Opens up root of machines C drive in explorer SIMS.net: Opens up SIMS.net folder in explorer PCAnywhere: Opens up PCAnywhere RDP: Starts RDP session for machine Version: Displays just the SIMS version of machine KILL!: Closes Pulsar.exe on machine if currently running Start: Starts the S3 Agent service Restart: Stops and then starts the S3 Agent service Stop: Stops the S3 agent service Replace: Deletes the SIMS.net folder and then copies over a source SIMS.net folder from a network share Delete: Gives option to either just delete SIMS.net folder or delete SIMS.net folder and SIMS.ini Desktop: Figures out if XP or 7 and puts SIMS.net shortcut on desktop Replace (p:\SIMS): Replaces the connect.ini on machine to our default Uninstall: Uninstalls the S3 agent on machine Most of this is done by using VB to create a batch file within the Temp folder of local machine which is then ran, the last line of batch file is always to delete the current batch file once complete so as not to leave Batch files all over the place. I'm not going to put up the actual spreadsheet as it contains all our machines and the cell references are a bit of a mess!
