I have bought 2 APC 3000KVA UPS recently and just finished mounting them in the base of my new 42U Server Cab... They are on top of each other - this shouldn't cause any issues with heat etc? Just a worrying thought i had... can anyone say that they have the same setup?

if its the same as the one i use it boots from CD... ... ...

we've gone and bought solid plastic chairs - the indistructable ones from espo - they last ages and are fairly cheap...

sounds like a pretty standard sata driver error... look at the bios and see if there is an option to change the SATA mode - you may have to update the bios and/or build a driver floppy disk. although i have had installs crash due to faulty RAM.. try running memtest86 (Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic) if its connected to your domain surely loggin on as the domain admin and accessing the users and passwords control in control panel willl allow you to change the passwords?

Whats the blue screen error message? Are the HDDs SATA or IDE? If they are SATA are you istalling the SATA driver with the F6 message on the XP install? or can you set the controller to compatibility mode in BIOS?

I have a HP Ultrium 460 external tape drive that i'm trying to upgrade the firmware on - i ahve downloaded the LTT app from HP's site and downloaded the newest firmware available but i keep getting this error message: Firmware update failed (wrong revision report: F5CD instead of F63D) Its the one that the app tells me is for the drive so i'm confused as to why it wont work... The reason why i'm upgrading the firmware is so that i can use my new LTO 4 tapes with 800GB storage otherwise it just ejects them...

Hi all - i'm looking at uying a couple of the HP DL385 G6 servers - 2x Opteron 2435 (6x 2.6Ghz) & 40GB DDR2 PC2-6400 and loading it with a couple of 146GB drives... a couple of the companies i'm dealing with are recommending Xeon based units... these are only quad core BUT they have DDR3 ram... is the extra two cores worth loosing for the extra RAM speed? Same as above - i'm loading mine with two PSUs... atleast then if the PSU goes all i get is a warning message or light come up and not a server down for the day... worth looking at have dual UPSs too... have each powersupply in each UPS and therefore the single point of failure is the mains supply and not the UPS.

I'm looking at buying a couple of HP DL385 G6 - (Opteron 2435) 2 x 6 x 2.6GHz processor, 16GB ram out of the box i'm going to load them with ram - 64GB each and couple them with two 8TB netgear readynas units. Hopefully that'll cope with everything i need atm and for the considerable future!

I'm running recuva through it now - i was hoping that there would be a way of ruuning something like the windows xp recovery console or something but the windows disks i have wont boot whilst i have the hdd plugged in... grrr

Hi All I have had a PC come into me suffering with the click of death - before it died i imaged off the HDD using clonezilla - i now have an image of 27GB data that once i image it back to a fresh HDD comes up as an empty hdd... I think the filesystem records have basically been lost - is there anyway to restore these? Cheers

the solution i had was to build a NAS box and find an opensource SAN program to dump on top - nexentastor works - although i'll admit all i use it for is to host my VM images. BUT it does have built in support to pull all your file permissions from AD.

I'm my opinion its always going to be about memory rather than processor speed - also do you have a preference for intel or amd processors? AMD are cheaper per ghz plus their new 6 core procesor seems quite tasty! You can buy some very cheap HP servers - i managed to pick up a couple of HP Ml115s for 170 each (Quad Core 2.2ghz, 1gb RAM, 160GB HDD) I took out the ram and swapped it for some OCZ Titanium sticks and they now have 6GB ram in them, between th twoof them they are running some SAN software hosting all my VMs. There are loads of cheap mini servers out there that would be perfect for running a couple of DCs in a VM'd solution.

I also have a air compressor that isn't quite portable but works wonders - got it from screwfix

Hi All I have a Citrix Access Gateway sat in my server cabinet for the past 2 years it has been working fine - basically i haven't touched it - i came to do a SSL certificate renewal and tried to get my 1024bit data uploaded onto the GoDaddy website to be told i need 2048bit encryption - the only way i can do this is to upgrade the CAG - i've downloaded the updated firmware CD but i'm now wondering how simple it is to update the system - as its the software i have installed on my secondary DC that i use to generate the SSL certificate request... My current version of CAG is 4.5.6 and the Access Gateway Administration Tool is also 4.5.6 - is it possible to upgrade just the tool? If so where do i download it from and also how do I do it? Cheers in advance! (BTW my citrix SSL cert ahs expired and now it not working i'm getting plenty of grief over it!) :@

I use a morphy richards rechargable POD wet and dry vac... its great for getting the dust out and has a long hose so that the motor can be kept well away from anything sensitive...

I'm just in the implimentation stages atm but i'll be running a OpenFiler SAN hopefully by the end of the summer holidays - It'll be hosting all the schools servers and data. The hardware i'm using is (x2): HP Proliant ML115 Server Opteron 1532 (4x 2.1Ghz 512mb cache) Western Digital 80GB Drive (Boot) - I did try a 16GG USB Stick but couldn't get it to work 4x Western Digital 1TB RE3 Drives (RAID5) 1 Gigabit Ethernet (Onboard) 1x HP Dual Gigabit Ethernet card.

my understanding with unison was that it was a constant syncronisation. I intended on using the servers to store a number of VMs on each and for example have 8 VMs total but run 4 each from the individual NAS boxes... Unfortunately its a difficult situation although i'm now looking at OpenFiler to run a HA Clustered environment. I'm goign to buy a couple more HDDs for the Servers and trial them with it although they wont turn up til tommorow so i'll keep trying with the FreeNAS system.

The filesystem is UFS (GPT and Soft Updates) the default for FreeNAS. All the information points to using UNISON or RSync to syncronise the two shares.

After some research and test installs freeNAS looks the most promising, i have both servers installed with FreeNAS and each have a share accessable over the network. SAN01/DATA & SAN02/DATA. I'm now trying to setup UNISION to syncronise the shared data folders across the two FreeNAS servers. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have 2x HP Procurve ML115 Servers (Opteron 1352 (Quad 2.10Ghz 4x 512mb) 4GB DDR2 RAM with 4x WD RE3 1TB HDD's and a 16GB Lexar Jumpdrive. I'm trying to set these up to run as a SAN with Load balancing and fail-over, using the USB as the boot drive and 3 of the HDD's in a RAID 5 array or an XFS+1 Array and the last drive as a hot swap. I was planning on using NexcentaStor 2.0.0 Develeper Edition but then realised that i could only set each server up as a seperate SAN and not cluster them... I'm now at a bit of a sticky spot so any advice or ideas would be great! I'm looking at Openfiler atm, but having dificulty loading it onto the USB drive. Also been looking at FreeNAS but without any joy on how to cluster them... Thanks in advance!

yes that seems to ring a bell, we had a novell network too... I don't remember anything about it being novell though... was convinced it was a dos program - i was very into programming then and had a look at the hard disk to find out what it was on it - i'm pretty convinced it was DOS based now i think about it! I've found a linux variant thru google but cant get it to work atm...

I have a P2 400mhz 64mb 6gb HDD, Compaq Deskpro that i want to use as a print server - i've tried using XP but i want to be able to display the current jobs on screen for the teacher to see and approve and cancel if necessary... when i was at college there was an old PC sat in the corner doing this and i would like to emulate it - anyone got any ideas what it could have been? it looked like a DOS or Linux/Unix system but not sure - it was blue and red with white text Thanks in advance...

You could always buy a pre-72 classic... Tax exempt then... or by an old diesel 1600 golf... you can pretty much run them on veg oil... plus insurance of over 14 year old cars is cheap as some companies offer 'classic' insurance policies...

Hi I have just had to switch on NAT on my wireless network to enable access to the internet... BUT now all my laptops with syncronised files are all dropping out from having access to their online files so to speak... I have deleted all the persistant routes that could have been causing conflicts and i'm now a little stuck for ideas... thanks in advance
