Is it possible to get abit more details as the videos do not cover what I need to do?

Hi, We are just in the process of implementing Bring Your Own Device for our Sixth Form. We have installed Meru wireless access points and we already have 2 Smoothwall UTM 1000 devices. Obviously what we would need is the students accessing their own wireless network by creating a hotspot on the Meru network and this will be assigned a seperate VLAN from our normal school network. The bit where I am lacking in experience is the setting up of the Smoothwall device. Reading other posts, it recommends setting up a SSL login page so when they log into the Meru access point the Smoothwall SSL login page appears and they use their normal school username and password. What I am after is assistance or advice in setting up the VLAN, DHCP, SSL Login page and Proxy configuration .pac file on the Smoothwall. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

When a student opens an Office 2010 application, goes to File, Open, in the location box at the top, they see the name of the file path. As part of the path they can see the Server name and if they click the drop down it shows all the network shares on the file server. They cannot access them as they do not have rights but it is annoying that they see them and are trying to access them. Is there something I can do so that the server name and shares do not show? Both. It takes the Active Directory permissions and usernames for the home folders and then you can add server shares as well.

Yes the Salamander webparts are 2010 compatable. I emailed the tech director who confirmed it.

We use NTLM Authentication and Windows integrated authentication with trusted domains.

We also run Ranger for Networks and Ranger Remote control. I find it very reliable and very secure. Yes it is not perfect but for management and security of school networks it is very good. We do not pay for the telephone support as I think that is very expensive and agree that product development could be quicker, especially where Windows 7 is concerned, but overall it does everything that I need as the network manager to manage our network. I still think that you will go some to beat the functionality of Ranger account manager and Ranger Remote, Ranger Outpost etc.

Out of interest what helpdesk system do you have integrated into it?

Have got Sharepoint 2010 running in full flow. Implemented online office web apps which I think is very good. Capability to alter themes on the fly is nice but seems abit lenthy. Overall it looks and feels very nice. Again the main reason that I would upgrade is solely for the online office web apps.

We use the Salamander my documents webpart on WSS 3.0. Gives all our stall access to their home drives and staff shared drive directly from inside Sharepoint. Mix this in with a ISA 2006 server and you get a good secure home access system. This could also be used for students. One thing that is handy is that this works on a Mac as well.

We use it for our Staff Intranet, Student Intranet, Capita Learning Gateway, just about everything. It is our main portal to everything.

Has anybody got any information when Ranger for Networks will be compatable with Windows 7. Have posted on the Ranger forum but nobody seems to want to post any answers back. Come to think of it, Ranger don't seem to want to send any information out about anything at the moment. Anybody know if they are struggling??

What we do is have an alert sent to Domain admins when an Administrtor logs in, that way you can see if one of your computers has been missed. It works very well for us as we run ECDL that requires a special account for a higher level of admin rights than a normal student account. If we did not use this then we would have to manually log in over 60 accounts and when we are in ECDL testing season this can be 3 - 4 time a day for a few weeks.

Hi I have uploaded the scripts. You will need to rename the logasadminexample.txt to a .bat file and the multipleusersautologin.txt to a bat file. Save all files in the C: directory. Create txt files for each of your computer suites like the room12.txt example. You will also have to amend the file names in the autologincommands file to reflect your IT suites. All you do then is copy the autologincommand to a command prompt and hit enter. Ensure all your computers are switched on before you send the script. Also ensure that the server service is running on all the computers. Once you send the script the computers will restart and will be automatically logged on as administrator or if required any multiple users that you have set up. Drop me a line if you need any assistance. One last thing, don't forget to run the undo script once you have finished. Our computers automatically start at 0800 in the morning so if any are left unscripted then they will automatically login. We use local profiles and have a script that clears them at the end of terms. We use Ranger 7 and our first login is approx 30 seconds and subsequent logins are approx 15 seconds. Biggest problem I always find is old desktop icons and start program menus point to old resources.

Hi, I have scripts that do exactly what you want to do. We have a script that logs all computers on in an IT suite automatically. Then you run an undo script to revert the changes. Saves loads of time. We also have a script that will log an ICT suite on using a different user to a different computer. This is used for our ECDL. So computer 1 logs in ECDL1, computer 2 logs in ECDL2 etc. Email me seperately and I will send you the scripts.

I used these a few years back and had a nightmare. Don't even use them for warranty and we have still got 2 years left. I use PC Specialist now.

Oops sorry, I thought at one point I might just have been trying to be helpful or even share my experience with you guys.

We are running 5 workstations using Windows 7 RC on the network all with SIMS.Net installed. Standard install just need to copy the Connect.ini over. Works without any problems. Windows 7 RC also works fine on Windows 2003 network, all programs that were previously installed on XP and Vista work fine. When running XP mode need to ensure workstations have Dual core capable of enabling virtual performance in Bios. Just sits inside Windows 7 as another OS and needs to be kept updated. Best option is just to dual boot with your main OS, easiest way to gain experience and knowledge on a new OS that is due for release in a few months.

VNC Manager 2.5 standard. Costs about £25. This will completely scan all your networks. You set up your folders i.e. classroom 1, classroom 2 etc. All you do then is if you want to Wake On Lan, right click on the classroom folder and click 'Send Wake On Lan command' and all you computers in the classroom switch on. This piece of software will also give you remote control over all your computers in the school. Just install the free version of VNC 4.0 onto your computers. You can then just right click on the classroom 1 folder and click show thumbnails and all computers in that room will be displayed on your desktop running live. Great way to monitor classroom usage. You can the double click any computer and have direct control over them. We also use a script that allows us to log on all computers in a classroom as any user from a command prompt. So for instance if I need to do a job in a classroom the other side of the school which has 32 computers in, I just Wake on Lan the classroom, send the script to log on all computers as administrator and then display thumbnails of that classroom and I have direct control over 32 computers and I have not left my seat.

Have you had a look at Backup for Workgroups. This is a full software solution which backs up to NAS. It has full open file management which means it fully backs up Active Directory, SQL, Exchange etc using shadow copying. It also does full disaster recovery even to the point of creating a disaster recovery plan for you which gives you full instructions on how to carry it out. Another key point of the software is the mirror capability. It will mirror the main backup to an offsite NAS device, so that if your backup disc goes, you just swap the location to the mirror and you still have a complete backup. We have 5 servers in our organisation. What we do is put 500Gb lacie drives on each one and Backup for workgroups backups to each drive. We then mirror the contents onto a 1TB Lacie NAS storage off site. One of the main benefits of this system is that there is no restriction on how far back you can restore from. For our students they can backup from the beginning of the academic year, even if they are at the end of the academic year 1 year later.
