  1. What do you expect?? After all we are descendants of convicts? Seriously the justice system is a joke here and as much as the pollies try and change the judges do squat. Maybe one day they will get off their fat arses and actually punish people with decent sentences. If you want another good (maybe that should be bad) example google the Aurukun case that is making headlines here at the moment. Makes me sick to think of what that judge ruled. She should be sacked!!!
  2. I had a chat to the tech again today and he said the issue was running the logon script. I have included a copy of the logon script so that people can see what is in it. If there is a better I am open to suggestions. The problem for us is that I am not up to speed with this side of networks yet and the tech's forte is with Novell systems, kinda sucks when we have to run a Windows system (We don't have a choice)LOGON.txt postlogon.txt
  3. I recommend K9 Web Protection to parents that ask. Fairly basic to use and does a reasonably good job.
  4. I have been asked by the senior tech to run a full chkdsk on one of the servers this weekend as we think there is some issues with one of the hard drives. I'm not hugely familiar with how to do this on Server 2k3. I assume you need to set it to do it on reboot but is it possible to do 4 drives (partitioned) as well as put the results in a log file so we know what happened? Thanks in advance!
  5. I have been told to block any websites like that. Something about the computers for school work and they can play games at home!
  6. I know a few schools that are using Papercut here and they are really happy with it. It is very adaptable to various needs and can also do Internet usage accounts if you are running an ISA Server. I will be installing it on my system come July, with the intention of running it in the background for that last 6 months of the year and then implementing student accounts in 2009, and also setting up department accounts for staff.
  7. I am the IT Manager at my school here with the rest of the convicts and I get $51,000 a year or around £24,000. I once thought about going overseas to work but stuff that!
  8. I had a similar problem in that I asked for the other tech to enable right click for students (I'm still learning about GPO's) and the nest time he came in I thanked him for doing it. Except he said that he didn't change the policy at all. Still haven't figured that one out, and yes He and I are the only ones with the password as it was only changed two weeks ago and no-one else knows it.
  9. @ cookie monster The scripts are mainly for assigning printers based on which room they are in and also for something which my brain can't remember (hey it's only near midnight here now )... I'll get a copy of the script tomorrow and find out. As I said before for now it does work so I don't really play with it unless I have to, but in time am looking at starting from scratch, especially if we go to Server 2008 next year.
  10. I have a query from our senior tech. When he setup the system he had to create domain users as a local administrator on a machine so that the logon and postlogon script would run. He said that any other configuration would prevent the logon scripts coming up when someone logs onto the machine. a. Does this sound right? & b. Is there another way around this. I apologise for the ignorance (if any) but my knowledge is mainly with setting home networks for people and I am on a very steep learning curve with running a larger network. The senior tech is on a contract basis and we get him out whenever there is a problem that I can't resolve. Fortunately the system is fairly reliable so I don't see him much;-) Cheers Rowan
  11. I've used Hiren's boot CD for this which I have found useful.
  12. I'm using something similar to them with a D-Link DGS 1224T Switch and have no problems. Sounds stupid but are they definately matching pairs. We have ones that area for two computers and some for a computer and a phone. The internal division of the wiring in the splitter is different.
  13. Thanks for the tips. Not sure as to which brand he was talking about and won't find out for a week or so as we are closed for business for a week (got to love holidays!!). I have a feeling that he can get a HP one for a bit over the $1500 mark without a KVM which is fine because I have a good rackmount KVM that wil otherwise become useless. Will wait and see.
  14. Hi all, First of all a thanks for whoever came up with the idea for this place. I know that I'm on the other side of the world to most of you but a lot of the problems seem the same. As long as I'm tinkering with computers I'll keep coming back here. My dilemma is this. I am running out of space in my server cabinet and need to get rid of the standard LCD monitor and put in a sliding LCD Monitor/keyboard. This will give me a lot more space and make it easier to work directly on the servers. Problem is which one to get. The local supplier claims that the only unit he can get that will work with the Windows servers we run is over au$1500. Apparently if we were running Sun Servers then he could get one for under au$500. Does this sound right or complete BS. What brands / makes are you running in your racks?? Thanks in advance, Rowan
  15. I have a rep coming in tomorrow morning to show me the Ruckus system. I first saw it at a trade show a few weeks ago, so too will be interested to see what it can do.
  16. I think that is for the Australian flag not Austrian. Only reason I mention this is that the other flag is the for the state of Queensland.
  17. Howdy, Most people call me Rowan and I am the IT Coordinator at a small secondary College in Australia. Came across this site while googling for related info and looks like I will be coming back here a lot. Thanks to all for the info contained and look forward to when I can offer help back. Cheers Rowan
