With tracking who logs onto what machines, if they are logging onto the domain, there is a thread on here about a logon tracker. It runs via script at logon and I have already caught a couple of serial key board tamperers with it. Teachers have also asked for logs to prove who was sitting where with vandalism to the desks. Thats what I ended up doing. I made a basic html version of our intranet page and set it to pop up in the autorun file. The main page had info about the school and the IT department and then I had a second page that had links to various programs mentioned above. The head thought it was a safer idea and apparently the feedback from people at the open day has been really positive.

We've been getting the D-Link DGS series switches lately. Really happy with them and in 4 years only had one GBIC fail.

Our college has their Open Day this Friday and I have thought about creating a CD of software as a giveaway from the IT Department. The software could either be something that their kids could use for school studies, system utilities and maybe some fun games / activities (obviously it all has to be freeware / open source) My list so far is:- Open Office Kompozer GIMP Acrobat Reader Audacity Google SketchUp Photo Story Game Maker AVG Free Lego Designer What other software would you recommend??

For staff it is surname first initial so Joe Smith becomes smithj For students it is year of expected graduation _ surname firstinitial. so a student that should graduate it 2009 is 09_smithj. That way it doesn't matter when they enrol, it groups them into the year level but I don't have to change anything each year.

The previous tech set up his images for local machines with three partitions: C drive for most system stuff (approx 50% of HDD) D drive - only a few gig for temp stuff X drive - Drivers and HDGuard swap file (whatever was left) Now with the new version of HDGuard out I have been talking to the developers and they claim that it is faster and better to have the swap file on the c drive and that got me thinking - do I need 3 separate partitions on local machines. Every thing is redirected from the server so no local storage is needed (well maybe maybe with the three laptops we have but nothing else) What does everyone else do?

I have had only one staff members laptop that didn't connect to the Ruckus system straight away. It was an old Acer and downloading the latest drivers for the onboard wireless fixed the issue

Well thanks to Kevin Rudd 60 pc's and 3 laptops are being delivered tomorrow morning. Ended up getting the HP 6530b Laptops and DC7900 Desktops. So....I've got four days before the holidays to see how many I can get installed between classes. Should be a good week!!!

Nope, can't get to it via MMC Unfortunately due to a mongrel proprietory firewall box we have I can't allow external access via another port except 80. It think that I will be starting from scratch with that server after the holidays. Have always wanted to play with Linux anyway so it might be a good excuse to do that.

I'm trying to publish a web server that I am playing with, but am having some problems. When I type in the url I get the following error. The confusing thing is that I am running Apache not IIS. IIS was installed but was removed ages ago. Unfortunately formatting the server is not an option just yet Any help appreciated

We are getting sufficient computers to get us to a one pc for two pupils. Most will be pc's not laptops as we want to get maximum life out of them. Interesting though it does talk about continuing making plans to accommodate a 1 to 1 ratio by 2011. Maybe he is planning to hand out more if he gets another term?
