So....... I know this post is super old but.... I have installed mono and I have almost got commandReporter running, one snag, there seems to be an issue with a key or token that needs to be generated from the host I'm running mono on, I know this sort of thing is done when using the salamander photo importer, has anyone else had any luck getting it to run??

janx1975 - it’s quite hard to give you a step by step plan as each school is different but a few ideas ... Decide how you are going to deploy images and ensure they are generic so that you don’t have to maintain more than one. Decide on your package management method so that you can start building and testing packages for all existing software, this also helps with making sure you don’t bake out of date software into the image. Ensure you survey staff (we use a basic google form) to get their opinions on what is currently good and what they would like to make things better (people are happier with change if they think they had a say in it) plus you may find out things people still use that you weren’t aware of. Do an inventory of equipment and collect together all of your drivers and make a plan for hardware that isn’t up to it. Consider your policies carefully as you don’t want hundreds of them each with a single setting in. We have 4 , Global, staff, students , restricted. The same goes for security groups, consider them as this will help with things like shared area permissions. If you are going to sync with office 365 consider your domain name carefully and read MS guidelines as this does cause fun and games. Download all the really useful tools from wisesoft that will help when exporting users from your old system and reimporting them into the new one. There is lots lots more but I can’t type anymore on my iPhone Hope some of that helps.

For something scalable, free and very customisable we use WPKG. We use it to in conjunction with DFS to manage packages across 3 sites and tons of different hardware and operating systems. Oh and did I say it was free.

Have you tagged the ports on the uplink ports of both switches? Do the VLANS exist on all switches you want to move data across? Is the smoothwall router set up and how is that configured to access the VLAN?

Hi You will need to connect the device to a port on the switch and untag that port on the VLAN you want it in (unless the device is VLAN aware then you can just tag the port) then any connections between other switches in the network will need to be tagged on that vlan. Your smoothwall will need 2 virtual interfaces, one on the old network and tagged on that network and one tagged on the new network, the switch port for the smoothwall box will need to be untagged on the old network and tagged on the new one. You will then need to sort out your routing either by adding static routes to the devices or by adding routes to both networks routers. I think that’s all.... Prob missed something vital.

Bit harsh synaesthesia , there is a cloud hosted edition too if you can’t or don’t want to host your own and depending on what you are using it for it may not be compliant ... But as you say , host it yourself and the data is all yours.

Another vote for osTicket, we use it across all areas of the school, not just IT.

Hi Janx1975 We have converted a few schools now with RM CC4 installed, in the case of schools with exchange we have left the domain as is and converted around the RM trash and finally decommissioned all the RM servers over a period of 6 months, we also tidied up all the redundant groups etc while we were on and others we started from scratch. If you want any support or model GPOs etc just PM me and we can help, we also have a few neat ways of doing package management that doesn’t need any expensive Microsoft magic or the use of messy GPO installs, we have even managed to keep The staff that used RM tutor happy. Just to note I work for a school in staffs that support lots of other schools I’m not a company touting for business.

Do you know to anyone that has kept a log of the recent outages as we are putting together a complaint. We have a few of them from our VPN logs at another school.

They are all Cisco branded phones, not sure if they have the Cisco Call Manager stuff on or the SIP firmware but its of no consequence as I have a pile of SIP compatible phones in a drawer ready to go at the High School Just waiting for the go ahead to swap over and have an instance of Asterisk/Free PBX ready and waiting.

Hi I'm a tech in a school in Staffordshire, I agree with Norphy, we support quite a few local schools and have moved several away from CC4 without flattening and starting again. In all cases they have had .internal domains and sync happily with O365 after adding the domain suffix into the existing setup, some have had Exchange federated with O365 and others have just has the AD Sync tool with just O365. All will be fine if you plan and test beforehand and once RM is out of your life you will be a happier person

We are currently experiencing the same problem with them, back in October I called the service desk asking if we could continue to use their VOIP solution when switching broadband providers as their service has been awful, the answer back then was "yes" now it has come to crunch time and I have a new provider in place they have said "No" and they have also now confirmed we can't get out of the broadband contract for another 15 months!!! even though the service has been shocking...
