that m25man seems to have been banned. As he was EXTREMELY helpful to me recently, I feel it is important to say so on the forum and I hope that the ban can be overturned and m25man brings his marbles back. If this post gets deleted - so be it - but at least I've stood up for him in a small way. We had a few wide area mains failures today which caused a few IT problems. Does anyone use.know of a simple method (not involving a whole network monitoring setup ) of getting a server to send an email once its restarted so at least I get to know which schools have a had a dip? regards Simon

I realise some people worry about such things but I think you really shouldn't. Microsoft has always been fairly non-aggresive when it comes to licencing their products and I'm sure that they will sleep at night if you've purchased the right license to run their OS on some hardware. Once you've done that, then what you run on top (as long as it isn't another copy of their OS) is NONE of their business and they are not never ever going to bother you (If your running some sort of hypervisor program - then its fair enough that licensing covers any OS running on it but if your just running a standard OS then stick what you want on top) Now just because you've asked someone the question and they've given you an answer doesn't mean that you need to follow it or its even correct - like I say - MS won't be bothered - they've had a bit of money andas long as they get a bit of money off everyone in the world and everyone keeps upgrading that something then they are happy - they can do the maths and £x times billons is a lot of money There are more important things to worry about in IT. We bought about 30 of these when they came out and find them very useful as simple openoffice/web browser/grab images tool. Its only when the school started using an online maths resource thingy that I needed to update it! It'd be nice if they handled Espresso mpg videos as well but you can't have everything Si

Luckily it looks like I've managed to get the share to stick to the left side places/folders/bookmarks??? when loading/saving so that should suffice Had to stick a password in into the keyring manger to stop it asking everytime but now it seems to retain knowledge of the server share everytime Si

I'm trying to update my old eeePC 701s to Ubunutu 9.04 (last one I can get fitted onto the machines) so I can run an updated Firefox so I can run a online maths prog that needs an updated flash! So got ubuntu up and running but I want to have my server pupilwork share auto-mounted everytime the machine is booted. I had this working on the orig OS - anyone know where stick my samba share mount script to achivee same effect - or is there an easy GUI method of doing this? regards Simon

Well that was a waste of 2 hours of my life The "helpful" ServerView software asks a lot of questions and is then does an unattended install. What I failed to realised was how pedantic it is over what flavour of w2k8 dvd I've got. If I got one think wrong with the description, it would go all the way through to the point of "put your os dvd in" and then it would say - can't find an appropriate OS!!!!! Turns out I have W2k8 R2 Std 64bit (NO SP) and now its installing (it just takes about 30 mins between attempts and re-entering passwords/ip address) Maybe I'll have a new server by the end of the day - maybe not ! Si @fujitsu - if you are going to write "helpful" software - then make it a bit more helpful!!!

It looks like the "serverview" dvd that came with it is the tool to use - it has a simple mode for me (Once you've plugged a USB Stick in to record the install???) I'll report back later Si

It wasn't the install media Googling brings up lots of WIn7 installs with same problem "cured" by setting SATA in bios to IDE. This also works for me but I'd like the RAID facility so I don't really want to have to install in this manner. (Unless I can install now and sort out raid later????) Googling isn't getting me anywhere - the server comes with some software called ServerView but that seems to be some sort of management for deploying loads of servers in a cluster. Slowly sinking here Si

Well, I now assign pupils to "child" (master) courses and then assign all other courses as "metacourses" to these master courses so I don't have any normal courses now But from what you are saying our cleo hosted moodles just can't hack >15 being added at a time! I wonder what happens with people with their own moodle servers? Si

Just got a brand new server (Fujitsu TX100 S3 is what it says on front) and a copy of w2k8. I tried installing w2k8 but it said it needed a driver for the cd drive???? and invited me to stick a usb pen or another cd in. Is this normal???? Fujitsu site doesn't seem to sell TX100 S3s Si (glug glug - help!)

Create a course and set it as a child course with another course using it as metacourse (if I've got the words wrong - don't blame me - blame the moodle bods for using such stupid language) E.g set one course up and then set another course to use the same enrollment membership for its course Then try and add in say 100 pupils to the 1st course (the one I'd call the master course and the one moodle calls (I think anyway) the child course. Does your VLE give up on you and only end up adding 10-15 pupils to the course therefore making you try again!. Mine does (CLEO Hosted) and I'd like to know if its them or general moodle issue Si
