If you see yourself moving well up the ladder of earnings, then investing in a house has (in the past) been a reasonable plan as a basic savings vehicle and of course you get to have a lot of control over your living arrangements. And of course it fulfills the human nesting instinct that a lot of people have. But renting is by no means (and quite possibly the most sensible) a daft option if you just see your self trundling through life, enjoying it where you can. its always been the way, that if you want a house, its going to cost you a lot to get on the ladder and a lot (compared to income) during the first 10 years. Most people have familys during this time and if your income is not increasing beyound inflation and/or interest rates then a lot of pain can follow. Educational IT support is not renowned for its progression and good salaries Good Luck Simon PS I married someone who already had a house so I was lucky

Did and ipconfig /all and noticed it (laptop) was picking up ip on hard lan as well as wireless - found lan cable plugged in the back (this was put into a class for a teacher to replace broken desktop - I should have removed cable to stop him plugging it in ) Now works fine Interestingly, it wasn't showing a gateway address on the lan ipconfig readout - when I'm bored one day I'll look into what was going on but for now - its back to setting it up Si

(Yes - I know - its in front of me ) Day 1 of setup and image 28 desktops/re-image 40 netbooks and switch 16 remaining old w2k3 AD machines into simple non-domain computers a la SimpleSi primary school network model So I remove one of the old machines from the AD, create my pupil administrator logon, reboot and go to run my WPKG install script from my new w2k8 server - computer says what server!!! It can see the old one, it can go onto T'internet but refuses to even acknowledge the existence of the new server. Me thinks the little people inside the computer are rebelling over the changes Just off to get a hammer..... Si

Basically, very thin screwdriver at the top push in keeping to top then get it between metal connector and plastic case, lever down and start waggling the wire from the back. if that doesn't work, try the bottom slot instead in case you've got it upside down Good luck Simon

[ipad] List of iPad apps for staff?
SimpleSi replied to Sam_Brown's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I'm not anti-apple in a serious way but I am generally against them being used in education as they are not usually good value for money and I'm all about value for money (And not supporting Flash made the IPad even worse value for money as we can't utilise existing educational resources ) Si -

Words fail me - call yourself a geek! You let the Phones4U con you into thinking that an Iphone 4 was better than a Samsung Galaxy S3???? Are you susceptible to hypnotism? Can't wait for the drugs to wear off and you realise what you've done What a plonker! Si -

Wanted to get pupillist out of Sims to update Moodle users so went to head teachers office Looked for computer - not there - wheres it gone (used to be to right of monitor last time I was in here) Oh there it is on the floor I put my pendrive in - doesn't work - try another port -that doesn't work I walk back to suite to get another pendrive - Assistant Head comes along and asks if I've left a pendrive in a computer - I explain that it doesn't work and I'm getting a new one - come with me he says - I think I've fixed that for you :howveryveryeveryembarrasing: Can you hear the sound of teacher laughter where you are? Keep to the technicals please One of my schools wants to record lessons for whole staff training so basically want to stick a camera into a class to record a lesson. I was thinking that one of the Edugeek type BettCams would be great if stuck in a corner, connected to a laptop. What/where/how much and anyone else doing such a thing and if so - what do you use? Si

...you can't access shares on a VM Server from the real server the VM is running on (Asks me for password -accepts neither the admin user one (Pretty certain I used same admin password on server and vm server) or even the standard teacher one. Of course, all my real clients (XP and Win7) are fine - just me on the server as I'm trying to do some end of year tidying! Si

Get as much RaspberryPi as you want now
SimpleSi replied to SimpleSi's topic in Raspberry Pi, Arduino & Other SBCs
Someone just tweeted that they ordered today - delivery schedule for early October. If I can get Scratch controlling (by which I mean find someone else who's done it and prepared to share how in simplesi terminology) the GPIO pins over the summer then I'd be hoping to persuade my schools to buy a few each so I can run out-of-school clubs in January and then hopefully in Y6 classes post-sats next year Si PS http://www.yousrc.com/index.asp also in the running for "contract" as Paul (me and Vikpaw talked to him at Bett last year) has stated that he's got it running on the Pi and controlling the GPIO :-) http://twitter.com/cymplecy/status/224773035708780544] -
assuming of course that their websites don't come crashing down again! Raspberry Pi | An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte! I personally have been threatened with removal of bodily parts if I buy anything else to do with it this month but you youngsters with your disposable incomes can now enjoy sone RaspberryPi as well My guess is that orders placed after noon today will not be delivered until end of september - lets see what happens Si
