Can't access my virtual server
SimpleSi replied to SimpleSi's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
If by that you mean paying MS a load of dosh each year uncessariliy just so you big boys and girls can have the easy life and just sit in your plush chairs in your air-conditioned data centres laughing at your help-desk messages, inflicting Office 2020 on users who just want to type a one-page memo and print it .... then I don't think so A Win98 VM wouldn't not talk to the network - It'll talk to anyone, password or no password Si -
Can't access my virtual server
SimpleSi replied to SimpleSi's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
If its free - I;m sure I could All of a sudden - I got it working. The last 2 things I did was to turn off all Firewalls on the w2k8 side and try and do a test print to a networked printer form the VM the print job came out and everything was connecting fine again!!!!!! COmputers - I hate em! Simon -
I virtualised an old server (W2k3) onto a my existing new W2k8 server before Xmas as I thought it was getting physically iffy and it all worked fine. But the school had a mains failure last night and since I just use VMPlayer to host the old server - I needed to come in and restart the VM. The VM runs up fine - says its connected to the network but nothogn actually works network wise, only the left half of the net connection icon lights up - pings don't work either way I'm a bit stuck Simon

No - we've got the desktop stuff The idea is that ipads are easy to use but we don't have same apps so learning curve - not going to going to get KS1 pupils/staff RDPing into the suite One of those threads that's not going the way I intended Simon

Using Window Movie Maker 6.0 on Win7 netbooks (as Windows Live Movie Maker doesn't let us narrate stop animations!) One major problem - the Publish movie dialog boxes are too big for 1024x600 netbook displays - As I found out to my horror yesterday with a class of 30! I can (hopefully) find a resolution masher to put netbooks into a squashed 1024x768 mode but I'm wondering if there is way of literally hacking the .exe file to find the dialog box sizes and change the height values. Anyone with some hacking skills up for the challenge! Simon

No ipads in school at moment Every teacher I meet with an Ipad shows me wonderful apps and wishes they could have a load in their school As I said the ICT Co-ord is KS1 so it would be driven. This is a a pure - there is X grand to be spent - so do we buy Ipads (as that's the tablet with all the lovely edu apps) or buy some laptops and use exisiting 2Simple type stuff. Simon

One of my schools "might" have a few quid spare for IT and since the ICT CO-ordinator is a KS1 teacher, they would like the new toys for them (No problem with that - Juniors are within few feet of a 20 PC suite and we have 15 netbooks in the school as well) KS1 currently have a couple of old laptops/class so we are looking at either a 15 Win7 Laptops or 15 IPads in a trolley (as price is similar) What do you reckon - give the IPads a go and see what we can get out of them (Obviously some nice apps that are fun/cheap and easy to use) or stick with tradition (2Simple/Tizzy's Toy Box type software) on PCs. If you work in a primary - what do you think? Or if you have young kids, which one would you want your childs school to go for? regards Simon

...when the old computer you need to get the teachers stuff off to transfer to the new one doesn't have drivers for a mouse and can't find them on Windows Update ...the new printer the head wanted for their office arrived yesterday when I told them to deliver it AFTER half-term - the head now wants it installing today! ....and head SUDDENLY finds £20K and wants to blow it on IPads (cause they went to a high school and everyones got one and they can do everything!) ....and one of the computers in the suite has failed - no prob I thought - then the nursery nurse says that's the computer they've done all their assesments on and of course its not been saved to the backed up server - they been saved locally. (I blame the network manager for not giving enough training for that one myself!) so instead of a nice quiet end to the half-term - its panic stations. OK - I've had a cuppa now, see you all on the farside Simon

So - can I use the vista version in Win7 and if so where/how to I get it? Simon

I spent a lovely summer a few years ago building a custom PHP one - I learnt a lot about PHP/SQL but it takes a lot more time than you'd think to tweak things to do what you want Simon
-
Another step forward Microsoft Got a class of pupils doing stop animation - went to load them into Win7 version of movie maker and found you can no longer simply click on an icon and narrate the movie. Didn't see that one coming - what' feature will be removed in the next version - importing video???? Simon

Is the 16,104 the actual salary the successful candidate can expect to earn or is 16,104/52*43.3 ish? I ask because jobs up here are advertised at the salary if you worked full year and therefore term-time only posts end up earning less than the headline advertistment. regards Simon

I just want to take a DVD, put it in a computer and run the setup. I'd like the setup program to deal with :- A. There is a previous version of Office and just upgrade it. B. There is no previous version(but posssibly a trial one) and just install it. When its finished, I'd like it to ask me to activate it. I would like the process to take say <10 mins. regards Simon

100% failure rate here But only bought 2 about 3 years:) (Bursar wanted to try out a firm that was doing "a good deal" ) Lasted about 15months - canabilsed 1st one to keep second one going and then that failed as well The people we bought them from wanted about 1 manday of diagonsis effort before they'd repair them so they've never been fixed. Mr Dropbox has restored my files - my comp says it will take 2 days to restore! - Prob going to exceed fair usuage limit on my broadband this month! Simon

Just a warning to people My home machine dropbox disc failed and I put a new one in and I had to re-install Dropbox. The Cloud Gods decided that since this Dropbox folder was empty, then I wanted to delete all my Dropbox files (60G!) instead of just re-downloading them) Don't panic I thought, Dropbox has a roll-back mechanism - unfortunately it is on a file by file basis!!! So, it seems you have to raise a support ticket and ask Dropbox nicely if they will roll things back for you. In the meantime - life without all my tech support/downloads is like going back to washing clothes by hand in the river - no quick running of portable apps from \\server\dropbox\apps And sorrry for slowing the internet down as all my servers start deleting and undeleting (I really hope that there is a good caching mechanism in place!) Merrry Christmas Simon
