  1. Thanks everyone. I'm going to raise this with the relevant staff and pass on the suggestions.
  2. We've checked Network times and it's not that. Our DHCP lease is 8 days so we will change it to 1 day to see if that has any effect. This is installed on our Domain controller not the file server. Justo to add for more information, this problem sometimes fixes itself. Our staff that get in at 7 normally report the problem. If I'm at home I login and restart the sever. If I'm already on my way in it has sometimes fixed itself by the time I arrive, this is normally about 30-60 minutes after the problem has occurred. We don't have any iscsi connections. All our servers are running on VM ware.
  3. Our staff currently love to send all staff emails to inform people about concerns about students. This includes things such as students who have illnesses, behaviour issues, problems at home, dealing with bereavement, etc. I moan at staff about this and informed them it is not appropriate to send this type of information as it goes to everyone in the school. The majority of staff do not need to know if a student is having problems at home and also feel this breaks all kinds of data protection rules. I have suggested if there is a concern that staff only email the students teachers and support staff that need this kind of information or that they add a note to sims and then send an email saying if you know this student to check the notes. This has fallen on deaf ears and has had no effect. Our healthcare coordinator has also told me that some of the emails she sends about students medical conditions must go to all staff to inform them of conditions. This is a tricky one as I can see where she is coming from but if I saw a student having a seizure I'm not going to remember an email from months ago or know the student's name, I'll just get a first aider asap. Can any one confirm if sending this kind of information is breaking any DP rules and if so how best to handle it. We have a new Business manager who is now in charge of DP and I want to go to her with my concerns and I know her first question will be what do other schools do. Any comments would be appreciated.
  4. We've got a bid of a weird one here, every 8 days users are not able to logon correctly. This has been going on for a few months now and only happens to users that shutdown their PC when they go home. When they boot it up in the morning they don't connect to the file server and their profile will not load so they login with a temporary profile and have no access to the file server. They still have access to other shared drives such as the sims drive. If we reset the file server it fixes the problem. We've been investigating this issue for a while but have not been able to find a solution. This is what we have discovered so far: If a user stays logged into their PC it works fine in the morning. We have had machines around the school pinging the server and they have not dropped any pings when the error occurs. No scheduled tasks that are set to run every 8 days. Backups have finished long before staff get in, We even disabled them for one night to see if it had any effect and users still could not login. The GPO that adds the file server fails to load. Obviously that last one is a big clue but we have no idea why it only fails every 8 days. It's really tricky to troubleshoot as we have to wait 8 days to see if any updates or anything else we try works. I don't want to have to keep restarting the server and would like to get to the bottom of the cause. Has anyone else ever had anything like this or has anyone got any suggestions on what might be the cause. Thanks
  5. Another (mostly) happy customer here. We are in the process of getting everything setup and although we've had a few snags their support team have helped us resolve all issues. We are rolling the DNA clinet out by installing the msi via a gpo. It took 5 minutes to setup and works a treat. The only thing I haven't liked is that to get the netsupport school to on Macs you actually need another set of licenses for netsupport assist. I don't think this is made very clear by their website or sales people. They have now resolved this for me but I think this could be made clearer.
  6. Our librarian has also been complaining out the poor performance of the HTML5 system. Their support is also shockingly bad, they just ignore your emails or leave you on hold for ages. I'm also not a fan of any company who tells you disable security features to get their product working. How about you just write software that works!
  7. I've been learning lots about web development recently and have been using code academy. I've already developed a couple of sites using the skills I've learnt from there. I would focus on HTML & CSS, Javascript, jQuery and PHP.
  8. I've just checked with our internet supplier LGfL and they are getting the same problem as me. So at least I know it's not something on my school network!
  9. Yes that's the one. I assume it is working fine for you then. Malware was my first guess as well but have run scans and nothing shows up. I've also tried on several different computers on the network including a freshly built one but all of them get the same issue. It's only happening on this site as well which is strange.
  10. Has anyone tried accessing the Microsoft home use program website recently? Everytime I try to go to it I get redirect to lots of dodgy sites.
  11. We've got a few we use Meraki to install apps and track them. We have an app we use called kids place that locks them down so they can only used pre-defined apps. The Meraki system manager has just released a new feature called work profiles which apparently gives you more control over them but I've not checked it out yet.
  12. It is a little bit pricey but was not the most expensive quote I got when getting prices a year ago. We use some of the advanced features but the main thing I like is all of the information it gives you. I know it gives a lot more data than anything else we looked at and we have used this to help make decision about what to do one the network. A quick example is our Macbooks kept running really slow and we couldn't work out why. Meraki showed us that each one was downloading updates from Apple each time they were switched on (Even though this was meant to be disabled!) we then solved this issue and they started working properly again. Also, having recently setup BYOD it gives us lots of info on what is connected and where we might need to add extra AP's. Compared to our previous system it was also extremely easy to setup and install over 50 AP's around the school.
  13. I'll happily recommend Maraki. We've had it for just over a year and have been very impressed with it. We fitted everything ourselves but I'm sure there are companies you get to help with the install.
  14. I don't think those air play adapters will work as them don't offer HDMI in unless you also have some kind of HDMI female to female adapter. Chromecast are just dongles with HDMI male adapters attached.
  15. The problem you have is HDMI outputs both video and audio in a digital format. You will need something that has a HDMI input and converts to VGA output with Analogue audio output. You really need something like this: https://www.startech.com/uk/AV/Converters/Video/HDMI-to-VGA-Adapter-Converter-with-Audio~HDMI2VGA As other have mentioned it will also require a power. Don't feel bad if you've made a mistake. Our head of IT asked me about purchasing Raspberry Pi's, I told him they weren't compatible with our with our VGA monitors. He then went ahead and purchased 50 of them anyway with some cheap £5 convertors of E-Bay. He was then shocked when none of them worked!
  16. Is it only network accounts that can't login? If so check that the time is synced with the server. We had an issue a while back when we made some changes to our server and the macbooks were trying to connect to the time server that no longer existed. Once we synced the time with the new server everything worked fin
  17. Fallout 4 - An open world adventure game. It has lots of leveling up options including skills, weapons and armour. You can also build settlements and start your own little towns with different trading options.
  18. I'll happily recommend Room Booking System. The SIMs integration and ability to sign in using LDAP makes it very east to use.
  19. The free version of Meraki system manager lets you send a pop up message to computers on your network. It also has lots of other handy tools as well.
  20. I would try the above on 1 PC with 1 user that you know you are having issues with. If it fixes the problem you could create a startup script that deletes the folder before logon and distribute it using GPO.
  21. I have had this issue before. There is a file in the default profiles folder on the c: drive that can't be copied to network drives. If you delete the following folder from the computer it should then allow you to logon. You will need to show hidden files to do this. C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer You only need to do this once, as once the profile is sitting on the sever it will load correctly.
  22. We're using Eclipse. It should do everything you asking for. Our librarian likes and it hasn't caused me to many issues.
  23. We were having this issue last year. We setup VLANs and expanded our scope over the summer. Although it was a bit of a headache to setup We now have plenty of addresses and it is much easier to manage.
  24. We have a 25 page guide that lets every one what is available to them. It was one of the best things I have done as it actually got a lot more people using our resources and also stopped me from having to answer the same questions over and over. This year I've also done shorter ones for students and parents as well.
  25. Is anyone else having issues with email this morning? Outlook keeps crashing and won't connect. The online portal is only displaying messages from yesterday for some users as well. I know there was a update recently and wanted to see if anyone else has been effected. Thanks
