SMART 6000s, power issues and unresponsiveness
jnfarmer replied to Gilo's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
We've had the same issue in a couple of our classrooms which led to replacements. -
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an IT Apprentice to join our IT & Digital Services team at Kent College, Canterbury. The IT Apprentice will be an enthusiastic technologist keen to provide first line support for our staff, pupils, and guests across both of our school sites. They will provide an efficient and effective support service to all stakeholders, and support the maintenance and development of our digital resources. Experience and working knowledge of Windows 10/11 is essential, alongside excellent organisational and administration skills. The IT & Digital Services team comprises the IT Manager, Senior IT Technician, IT Technician and the IT Apprentice. Alongside working, the IT Apprentice will study towards a Level 3 qualification. Hi Jon Just so happens we're looking at deploying vape sensors. Could we set up a call about Halo devices before we go about trialing them? Cheers James

We've been looking into ways we can set up a kisok device at our main reception where visitors could click a button on the device, and get a unique PSK for our guest wifi (we're a Ruckus Cloud house) I recently stumbled across Wiflex, Your visitors and employees easy and safe on the WiFi - Visitor registration, BYOD onboarder and one click (wiflex.eu), which looks a really clever way of being able to achieve this. It integrates with the Ruckus on-prem stuff, and they do have a BETA integration for Ruckus Cloud, but it doesn't seem to work as it isn't able to grab the password through the Ruckus API. I've spoken to Wiflex, and they say every time they fix it, Ruckus change something and it breaks again. Before I delve in to the depths of Google to find another solution, are there any Ruckus gurus on here who reckon I might be able to achieve this out of the box? Cheers James

So... Our IT estate is a mixture of MacBook/Lenovo/Surface Pros, all laptops and the odd desktop, but all the people in this area of the building are on laptops. Most will be using docks, again mixture of Lenovo/Startech/Surface or a USB-C adaptor with ethernet it, some also just on wi-fi. Some of our offices don't have enough ethernet ports, hence some office based workers using wireless. The troubleshooting on Ruckus isn't showing anything obvious, certainly nothing about under powered APs. Some EAP connection issues, but I've put that down to roaming around the site. We've mentioned that the international calls might be a bit droppy due to the connection the other end, but some "internal" Teams calls are also a bit ropey. We have asked those who do the international Teams calls to try elsewhere in the site, and when they did, it was fine.

I can't. When I go and sit in that area to do some work, including phone calls and Teams video calls all seems fine, which adds to the confusion. I've got SNMP traffic senson on the uplink ports and both ends (core and access switch) and it doesn't look overly loaded. We've had our MSP look at logs on switches and they can't see anything obvious.

We've got a weird issue at our place that we cannot get our heads around and I'm reaching out for some help and comfort! Most complaints are around Teams/Zoom video calls, although others mention "general slowness". We've got a section of the building (Head/Deputy Heads/Finance/HR/Bursar/Admissions) that is having constant issues with wired and wireless connections, yet everything we look at and test seems to come back to suggest it is all ok, even though the user experience is not! Here is what we've done so far: Tested all copper cabling, and even though it is at "worst" Cat5E, all tests ok. I'm talking high end fluke test kit, not just flashy lights test. Tested fibre between the switch and our core. Switch is a new Aruba CX 6100, 10G to the core over OM3 8 core fibre. One pair tested not so great in terms of dB loss, but the other 3 pairs were really good, so we moved from "bad" pair to one of the good pairs. We use Lightspeed Filter and WatchGuard firewall. I've gone through those and made sure nothing is blocked/inspected in terms of MS Teams and when I run a connectivity test all comes back ok, except for high jitter, which can then be absolutely fine on the next test. Next thing to try is swap the 10G SFPs back to 1G SFPs to see if that helps in anyway, but we're not seeing any packet loss. And other than replacing the fibre run, which I'm not really wanting to do as nothing suggests that we should, we are at a bit of a loss at to what else to try! Oh, and we use Ruckus One wi-fi which went in last summer and all switch firmware is bang up to date. Help!

Our HR dept have rolled out Every HR. IT had nothing to do with, but just chucking it out there.

We recently replaced our Aruba kit with Ruckus One and Cloudpath. Love Ruckus and no looking back.

BYOD in a boarding school - if I had hair I would be tearing it out.
jnfarmer replied to Rilot's topic in Wireless Networks
Not sure if you can do this with Smartzone, but have Ruckus One with CloudPath, we do a captive portal onboarding with M365 (in your case AD) which then gives the pupil a DPSK. Not sure about the issues with Smoothwall not linking usernames to IPs. We use Lightspeed and it does it without any problems. Might be one to kick to Smoothwall? -
Also 100% recommend. We spun up a hosted 3CX instance which was super easy, it's easy to set up and administer and you get really good bang for your buck with it!
-
It will depend on what your requirements are I suppose. We're a 1:1 device school, and our DSL wanted to ensure that the same level of filtering was applied offsite that was onsite. We use Lightspeed and I'd argue it's one of the better solutions for our type of set up, athough getting to that point was a whole different headache...

I prefer to know when things go down... Do you let out an excited squeal when part of your network wakes up and comes online?

Cyber security training for non IT staff

What about looking at solution like Boxphish or KnowBe4? Include some internal phishing campagins and continual training based off of those results? -
Rental agreement between Easy4U and parent, but device is still enrolled in our MDM so we still have overall management of it. I do believe Easy4U say that the school will pick up part of the payment if the parent defaults, but I think it was only a certain amount per default and we worked this to be cheaper than what we're providing at the moment. They have really strong links with Dell and Microsoft at the moment, and are accredited repair partners, so will be able to do all repaires in house rather than sending them back to Dell/MS. They're definitely worth a look.
-
We've signed with Easy4U and one of the main positives was that their portal is open all year round. Sure they have a cut off date if you want a bulk delivery on a certain date, but with the portal being open all year round the rest will arrive shortly after. Also means any late joiners won't have to wait until the next date for the portal to open. They have loads of other positives, but as a boarding school that seems to recruit all year round this was a massive bonus for us.

Hi all We're reviewing our current web filtering solution (Lightspeed) to ensure it is fit for purpose and the best for our school. I'm familiar with Smoothwall and Netsweeper, and I'm quite interested in looking at Securly. We're an independent boarding school with pupils from Nursery all the way up to Year 13. We've got two sites, although our VLANs stretch across both sites. All staff and senior school pupils have a school provided laptop, either macOS or Windows so we would need something that can filter managed devices whereever they are in the world, as well as BYO and guest devices. Flexible scheduling for our filtering policies. Decent reporting, preferably with the ability to create custom reports and scheduling. Something like Lightspeed Alert or Smoothwall Monitor is essential. Any recommendations? Would like to hear what people think of Securly and the idea of not having any metal on site for filtering. Thanks James

Sorry to resurrect this thread but we're having this issues as well. Yes, turning off the change password at next login flag works, but we've got to do this with 1,000 users. Is it possible to disable on bulk? Can't see a way to do this in Google Workspace, maybe Gam? Or even better, have it disabled as part of the provisioning process.

I dropped an egg from a significant height the other day (counter top to floor) can confirm that the egg shell DEFINITELY got mixed in with the whites and yolk.

I thought they were cunning...

We lost an edge switch yesterday from a thunderstorm and then I was woken up in the night by two foxes doing whatever foxes do. Got a bit of a grump on today!

Separate VLAN that isn't routable with the rest of your corp network, and only allow ports for gaming on that VLAN? Bit of an administrative overhead having to change VLANs on ports but at least it keeps it segregated a bit.

Intune and Web Filtering
jnfarmer replied to Mr_Jiminy's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We're using Lightspeed, which has an agent on Windows/macOS/iOS devices which continues to work in and outside of the network. The also have on-prem appliances for BYOD and Guest. They're just about to release better reporting for web activity, including live logging, which I'm very happy aobut. -
We're about to swap out our Aruba Mobility set up with Ruckus cloud, and CloudPath on top. We wanted CloudPath to make use of Azure AD/DPSK. I can't wait!

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner! Thanks so much for this. Completely forgot about those settings!
