    The objective is to have each student in the school with a device they can use in the classroom. As we can't afford to do it, it has been decided that we let them bring their own to cut costs. Actually, I should have mentioned that 'IT not touching their devices' means us not installing anything on their devices because *students don't like it*. So I would like to know how this would work?To start with you are going to need meet the "Prevent Strategy". Its compulsory...or an obligation. Or whatever words you would like to use. Thanks for a very helpful post. I knew it is not going to be something simple and you have confirmed that.

    We already have a solid backbone and will be upgrading our broadband in near future so covered well there.

    As far as I know schools are required to authenticate all the students and staff so that won't work well. - - - Updated - - - We are currently looking at Cisco, Ruckus and couple of others. Will be decided next week.

    I have been asked (told) we roll out BYOD for students across all year levels. It needs to be setup so that students should be able to bring their own device to school and connect to the school wireless network without IT even touching their device. My concern is, the risks it will pose on the rest of the network. They are going to bring their machines full of malware and will be able to freely connect any number of devices to download their personal stuff.To give you some idea of our network, it comprises of HP Procurve switches which are VLANed and subnetted but there are no ACLs as such to restrict access. We are running Windows Server 2012 R2 on VMware for most of the services. We are in the process of upgrading our wireless to cope with the increase in the number of devices and throughput.I know it is definitely possible but have no idea how it will work in reality as I have always worked in a tightly controlled environment where no such thing would ever happen. Moreover, I don't have advanced networking skills and don't have time to learn within the required timeframe as we are a very small team with a lot of pressure. Also, I would like not to use the production network as a guinea pig even if I gain the skills somehow.I would like to know if anyone else has done it and what is required to make it happen. Also, what are the challenges I should be prepared for and the implications it may have on the network and the school as a whole?

    Not this time. We did though in the past.I have been able to get the budget approved for enterprise wireless this time.

    We will definitely be keeping the admin PCs on wired and all the existing desktop labs will stay on wired until they are phased out except one. As students will be bringing their own devices and teachers will be using laptops, their argument is spending money on cables is a waste.

    I can't agree less but the I have been told that trend amongst other schools is wireless and to compete with them we have to do it as well. It gives teachers and students mobility making them more productive. All I can do is wait and see.

    Have had a meeting and while they agreed on most of other things, not on the network ports. They said as we are going all wireless from next year we won't need the cables at all so why waste money on something we are not going to use. I tried to explain but ...........So hopefully half a dozen will suffice us and I won't have to deal with getting it done again.

    Thanks everyone for the input. I have made a list of these and sent them to the principal and the Business Manager. They had allowed for fourth of what is suggested here. Now the real challenge is how do I convince them to spend money on something which is not needed on day one but will likely be used in future.

    It is the time we refurbish one of the older buildings as we have received the grant after waiting for few years. The leadership is in the process of finalising the design of the rooms and the furniture and I have been asked for my input in regards to the IT networking, cabling and equipment etc. There are mainly five classrooms which need to be taken care of but this is the first time I have been involved in such a project so I don't have much experience doing it. I understand it's not very demanding but would like not to miss anything and make sure I future proof everything. So what would you IT guys suggest in terms of: How many ethernet ports and where they should be? What type of ethernet cable should I use (Cat 6/7 etc.)? What type of projectors should I buy? I am in the process of upgrading the wireless so that is already covered. Anything else I should consider?

    How did you stream to the projectors, we are looking to do something similar.

    This is not really on option for us as there are so many programs which are only available on Windows. Moreover, there will be few cloud apps which may not work on an iPad either.

    Hi, We are looking to rollout 1:1 tablet at our school starting from next year. We will most likely get the tablets for Year 7 and 10 students to start with but this hasn't been finalised yet. We are also considering giving tablets to our teachers(with dock) for better mobility. I have started researching on the models available out there so that I can shortlist the ones which will suit us best. MS Surface/Pro and Dell are on the top of my list. Once shortlisted, I am planning to get them to send out couple of units to us so that we could evaluate them before making a decision. I would like some recommendations on which tablets/specs will suit best for teachers and students. Another important decision we have to make is on financing the devices. Being a small school we do not have the funds available to purchase them from our budget. My preference is to buy them outright and get the parents to pay an annual ICT levy which covers the cost of the devices and software as this makes it much easier to manage them from IT perspective. However, our business manager is reluctant to use this model and wants the parents to buy the devices directly from the vendor/supplier so that we do not have to deal with any money matters. I can imagine all the mess and management headache it will create and I am also unsure how I will deploy OS and applications on the devices. Moreover, if they are student owned, we may not be able to install some of them due to licensing restrictions. I would like to know if others have been in a similar situation to us and what have they done so that it is a win-win for everyone. Thanks

    Hi Davit2005, I have tried it again using your suggestions and it appears to be working fine. Also, do you suggest using Everyone group or Users group for the home folders root folder?

    Hi Davit2005 I have tried to do the same in many different ways but haven't been successful. Are you able to give more details about it. Every time I make it read only, folder redirection breaks.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I did not know something like NTFSFix exists so I will give it a try and hopefully it will work for me.

    Have you tried upgrading the server to R2?

    I think I used the wrong term but its not just a new server but I am moving the folders to the new domain so the permissions have to be reset. The old file server is a mess.

    Not sure why you are having all these problems. I have been using it for last one year without any problems. Just finished reimaging all staff computers(70 of them) and it all worked without any issues. The client is Windows 8 x64 installed on VMware with all the programs. There was a bug in the past which (sort of) corrupted your WIMs but I think they have fixed it now.
