Help with Stange Display Port/HMDI issue
enbiggen replied to mdrabble's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
I think this might reference the one (it's been a long time since I set it, but looking up the reg key brought this reference from Edugeek up): /forums/office-software/188143-use-presenter-view-powerpoint-2016-disabled-default.html This only affects newly created PowerPoints from memory - not existing ones, or ones created at home... -
Smart Notebook 23 - default to opening 22?
enbiggen replied to enbiggen's topic in How do you do....it?
For reference: When I use notebook.exe it opens 22 (or rather 23 in 22 mode), when I use launchnotebook.exe it opens 23 - and that's fine for the shortcut in our menus, to force 22. However, when it comes to opening .notebook files, even though the ftype (by default) runs notebook.exe, it opens in 23 mode. I've had a quick look through the strings using process manager, and I can't see any obvious command line options to choose between the two. I'm assuming when it has a parameter (the filename in the case of double clicking on a .notebook file) it must just default to 23? -
Hi, Is there anyway to make Smart Notebook 23 open the 22 version by default when you double click on a .notebook file? I know you can "View"->"Open in Notebook 22" afterwards, but I'd like it to default to 22 as it has more features and will help our Maths teachers. Thanks.

Hi Everyone, We're looking at finding some easy to understand (and short) posters/sheets aimed at staff in schools for cybersecurity. Does anyone have anything they could share, or recommendations? The resources we've found already are a bit word heavy, or are chargeable but with so little content in the examples that you can't be sure what you're buying. (Hopefully this was the best/right forum to post in for this.) Thanks, Enbiggen.

BETT 2023 GIVEAWAY - What is your earliest gaming memory?
enbiggen replied to VeryPC's topic in Our Advertisers
Oh the nostalgia! I can feel the opening and closing of the cassette box when I remember this, the sound of the plastic case hinging open, the colours of the inlay being so vibrant! I think we may have started with the 16K version of the ZX Spectrum, with my Dad upgrading it to 48K, but having looked at the instructions for doing this online I'm impressed as it looks to involve more than just fitting a few extra memory chips into sockets. (My Dad was handy with a soldering iron, so it wouldn't surprise me if my memory was correct). Thanks for the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane. -
Technical consultancy for Migration of SIMS Servers
enbiggen replied to cathycolless's topic in MIS Systems
We used ESS earlier this year and it was an exemplary service. It was £525.00, and that was cheaper than I expected, and cheaper than some of the other quotes I'd received. -
I got a block on "clients3.google.com", which online is usually for Chromecast (according to my check online). Temporarily allowing this through got to the app's login page, but I've disabled it again. I've emailed Class Chart's support asking what it's used for, and what the minimum URL we'd need to let their app function.
-
Thanks - unfortunately I've already also added it to our HTTPS don't inspect list too. I don't suppose you could copy and paste a list of the URLs that you whitelisted/didn't intercept - just in case it's different from the list ClassCharts gave us? Cheers, Enbinggen

Two weeks ago ClassCharts released an updated version of their teacher app. As our iPads have progressively updated to it, the app no longer sees an internet connection. I've received the latest list of sites to not filter from ClassCharts, but it hasn't done the trick yet. Is anyone else having the same issues (we use Smoothwall for filtering), and has anyone else had any success getting it to work? If so, could you pass on your findings? (I wasn't quite sure of the category to put this under, but most of my searches for ClassCharts gave results in "MIS Systems".) Cheers, Enbiggen

Hi, We have a centralized service, and it was originally put in place for this reason, but over time there have been additional printers added (beyond our control). Many of these printers only print out a small quantity over the year, and don't really justify their costs. However, they are also beyond our control over removing them, which is why we've been asked to think about replacing some of them with greyscale printers. :-( Thanks, Enbiggen.
-
Hi, Our Business Manager is looking into reducing our printing costs. At the moment we have a managed service and our rental costs outweigh the amount printed on a lot of the printers, so our Business Manager has suggested replacing some of those with purchased printers with the users paying for their replacement toner and paper use. Monochrome (as they'd need to start using the central printer-photocopiers for colour). Duplex printing. Wired network. 5000 pages a year? Ideally holds a ream of paper? Non-manufacture toners should be available. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks, Enbiggen.

Hi, For the importing (but not maintaining) you may find KB0023989 useful: "How to Bulk Import Email Addresses and Phone Numbers", which uses Routines->Data In->Pupil Data->Import from Spreadsheet to import a CSV in SIMS. The link to the KB on ESS's support site is: https://customer.support-ess.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sys_kb_id=0b86edac1b5b2010fe688551f54bcb10 Thanks.

Barracuda Cloud 2 Cloud - UK Education Suppliers?

Hi, If you could include the supplier who you used, I'm fine with having a look at it and contacting them for comparison pricing. Cheers. -
Barracuda Cloud 2 Cloud - UK Education Suppliers?
enbiggen replied to enbiggen's topic in Cloud Services
Is this the IDNS that's in Bolton? (Their website is under construction at the moment: https://idns.co.uk ) The FTE bit sounds very hopeful. Thanks. -
Hi, I'd like to get a rough price on Barracuda Cloud 2 Cloud for backing up Microsoft 365 (email, teams, sharepoint, onedrive), so I'd like to get in touch with a supplier, but I haven't had much luck searching for one. Someone mentioned CAE, but I don't recognise the company, and my Google searches have been a miss. I know from reading here that they've got prices based on the number of staff (or staff accounts) with the pupil accounts being free, so I want to go to an education reseller, so that we can a better idea of pricing. Could anyone drop in a few suppliers in this thread? Ideally with their web link so I can make sure that I'm getting in touch with the right people? Thanks.

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
enbiggen replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
I think not reporting it affects some of the funding schools get related to doing the tests, or at least that was what we were told. (I report them anyway, as I imagine it will help the government make statistical decisions.) -
I used this code from https://gist.github.com/ReubenBond/1387620 (without wrapping it in the function) and attached it to a login script and that disables the "automatically detect settings" in proxy settings - which seems to be working and letting Teams (and Internet Explorer where it's still in use) work again. Thanks for the help - having things to try helped reduce the stress.
-
It is, it worked when we didn't have wpad enabled, and just had the manual proxy. When we disabled wpad, it went back to working. That's what I followed when I set it up for wpad. It was working before then (for a long time) without the proxy exceptions in our manual setup, but I thought it was probably inefficient and fixing this might also solve another problem I was seeing. We only set 003 (router), 006 (dns servers) and 015 (dns domain name). That was something I hadn't checked (and I'd seen something online about 252) so I was briefly hopeful that if it were there, I could disable it to undo and get things working again :-( Thanks.
-
Hi, I've re-tried using "ipconfig /flushdns" and rechecked "nslookup" and it can't find "wpad" or "wpad.mydomain", which I thought meant that it wouldn't be able to be redirected to the proxy.pad/wpad.dat? When I have "Automatically detect settings" on (which is the default) the Teams app won't log in, and gives a "caa7000a" error. When I set "Automatically detect settings" to off, the Teams app logs in without issue. When I had wpad enabled I was getting failures because it said there was a problem with the certificate - this stopped happening when I removed it, so I'm assuming that that means that it's not getting wpad.dat from smoothwall otherwise it would still be occurring? Thanks.
-
Hi, I tried enabling wpad to experiment with it for Smoothwall, but it was causing issues. I've disabled it (removed the entry in DNS and added it back to the blocklist) but it looks like it's cached (or something) as it's still stopping Teams (the app) from working. If I switch off "Automatically detect settings" then Teams starts working again. However, I've yet to find a way of doing this automatically at the group policy level, and normal users (understandably) can't access this setting to switch it off. Has anyone any ideas? Thanks, Enbiggen

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)

"The booking system is currently being updated so eligible groups can pre-book a booster dose from 2 months (61 days) after their 2nd dose. If you are not able to book a booster dose yet, please try again later today or tomorrow." I had booked for the first day I was eligible (22nd December) under the 6 months rule - I've just moved it forward to next week - not much difference, but it gets it out of the way. -
Even more puzzling, I created a local user level account, and set it up to use the proxy. The other thing that isn't applying are the user policies from the domain. It was able to sign in, access the templates, and I was able to "open in app" from Teams. I'm going to try creating a new Domain user in an OU with no user policies, see if that works, then add candidate user policies until it stops working - that will hopefully narrow it down. Does anyone have any additional troubleshooting ideas to try? Cheers, Enbiggen.
-
Hi, Originally this stemmed from other users not being to "Open in app" from Teams - they'd try it on, say, an Office document, they'd be prompted for their Outlook 365 details, but then the content would be blank. When they use File->Account and the "Sign In" button they're prompted for their details, but it doesn't sign them in, and just leaves it looking the same with the "Sign In" button. When they use File->New they don't see the templates, and get "Sorry, we had trouble getting the featured templates and can't show them right now". With an admin level account I can do both of those things. I've set my staff level test account to use the same Smoothwall group as my admin level account, and that doesn't make any difference. If I log into windows with my admin level account, and then sign in to office in Word using the staff level test account that works. The Office 2016 group policy I have is applied to all users, including my admin level account. I'm continuing to investigate, but wondered if anyone had come up with anything similar, and what solutions you might have found. (My Google searches haven't really brought up anything I've thought is relevant yet.) Thanks, Enbiggen.

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)

Admittedly this is one of the first links I discovered in a quick search for actual virologists, but this is Dr Cheryl Walter, back in July 2020: https://www.hull.ac.uk/work-with-us/more/media-centre/news/2020/university-of-hull-virologist-answers-biggest-questions-on-covid-19-face-masks How do masks help prevent the spread of Coronavirus? Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) causes a respiratory infection that has been termed COVID-19. Like most respiratory infections, it can be spread from person to person in droplets and/or aerosols. Masks help to catch the droplets that we breath out and breath in. How do you feel about masks personally? Do you wear one and, if so, wear and when? I think they are literally lifesavers. They are not 100% effective but they do help a lot, along with social distancing and handwashing, in preventing transmission of COVID-19. I wear one whenever I go out the shops. There are many other examples I've read over the last year and a bit that confirm my view that masks pose a positive benefit. It is, in no way, a deprivation of my civil liberties. It's barely an inconvenience.
