  1. One school I know, one of the teachers put some copied resources on the public website. They were sued for £20,000. Nobody got a criminal conviction, but they don't do that sort of thing any more.
  2. laptops with decent batteries work.
  3. With 8.0 the 832's reboot themselves ! It's a bit better since the SR1 release but we still see a few random reboots.
  4. https://www.qnap.com/i/useng/tutorial/con_show.php?op=showone&cid=165 This does also sync onedrive but I'd also recommend Google Drive over OneDrive - there are more integrations for it.
  5. qnap has a plugin in their cloud that connects to a GAFE account. Unlimited storage for free
  6. GlusterFS/Samba combo will deal with the file locking problem. It's a pretty tried and tested method so I'd probably go with this. https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/GlusterFSonCentOS Here's a list of distributed filesystems to choose from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_systems#Distributed_file_systems orangeFS looks interesting
  7. http://www.vaioni.com/uploads/files/SLA%20Doc.pdf
  8. There is a slightly newer Ruby port here: https://github.com/mitukiii/nude.rb
  9. Could you script nude.js ? https://www.patrick-wied.at/static/nudejs/
  10. It can definitely work, but I'd advise ditching the Drive sync app as soon as possible and working directly in Drive.
  11. We push out the Citrix HTML5 client :-)
  12. There are different types of CAL. You need a server CAL to connect to any windows server. 1 per user. On top of that, for remote desktop you need a terminal server CAL. These are either per user or per device. For VDI you need a VDA license for each client. You also need an Office license for each device that will run office if you choose to.
  13. You can get it browser based if you ask them for the VLE version. They will upgrade for the cost of the media IIRC.
  14. I am intrigued. please post your ISO 27001 certs.
  15. @Glaway I don't agree with you because there has to be a baseline that everybody should follow, and this essentially, is the definition of democracy. If there is a systemic fault with DfE/Ofsted rules then I am in absolute agreement. The Governments' response is to tighten up the law. I'll put money on the guy making the claim against the high court is dyed in the wool tory, he has other kids in private schools and takes several holidays per year. The fact is that Schools/Governing Body's /LA's have to adhere how the law is interpreted . If the law is bad VOTE.
  16. The problem is that the law is inconsistent. The average absence rate is around 94-95% in the UK. This kid had 90% but the judge ruled it was a good level of attendance. This isn't how ofsted see it : 98% is outstanding 90% is really quite bad. The school is judged by these measures, so either the law needs to be changed to reflect the ofsted judgements or ofsted change their rules so that schools in more affluent areas whose families who can afford holidays are not penalised.
  17. If the entire school had only a 90% attendance it would be in special measures.
  18. ok with that exception, their attempts at copying ios with windows phone didn't exactly work out well.
  19. Couldn't agree more, but they are the masters at copying others; the entire cloud strategy is only ever two steps behind Google so my money is that we will see a workable MS edge/Chromebook very soon.
  20. I was thinking about the (absured) system requirements for such a tiny (10Gb) SIMS database. To minimize hosting costs you want to be paying for what is running. Given the SIMS is only heavily used at certain points of the day it would be most effective to run on a scalable system and only pay a minimal cost when it's under no load. I'm not too sure how Azure handles this and I was really thinking of some of the google services but presumably Azure can too.
  21. Agreed, but it's not that different than the continual upgrade cycle we currently enjoy: Need to upgrade the O/S for security, Need to upgrade PC's to run the O/S, need to upgrade the apps to run on the O/S. The big advantage here is that most cloud apps are O/S and hardware neutral (HTML5) so you make savings on the PC and O/S upgrades.
  22. ok docstorage aside. What about if you chose to use a clustered MSSQL environment for load balancing and failover? This is a much more likely situation for Azure/AWS/GCE based systems. I would imagine the capita engineer / 3rd party support wouldn't have too much experience of that and would happily pass the buck too.
  23. By this rationale MSSQL on linux would be fine too, and SAMBA as the document server. The application wouldn't care.
  24. only if the network security is mis-configured.
