Hi Guys, I know this probably rather simple but I'd just like to make sure I understand it. When linking group policies, I have 2 Group Policys: 1 -> Default Domain Policy 2 -> Internet Settings Group Policy (The numbers are the link order) Default domain policy sets the proxy to 192.168.0.40:8080 Internet Settings Group Policy sets the proxy to 192.168.0.45:8080 Now, when the policys are applied, what will the clients proxy settings be set to? I would assume it would be set to 192.168.0.40 and then changed to 192.168.0.45 almost straight away as it loads Default GP and then the Internet one directly after? Next question, how does the Enforced option affect the GPs? If the 1st one is enforced, can the 2nd one override the settings? what if the 2nd one is set to enforce? what if they both are? Sorry, like I said, probably a simple answer

We have: surname-firstinitial So i would be: parker-n and then we use OUs and groups to sort out securities and organise everything. Every year, we simply rename the last OU (Grade 12 in our case) to Grade 12 (2008 Backup) and increment the name of every other OU and group, and create a new one for the incoming Grade 4 students.

I have one of each of these sets as of yesterday, I will try and get them installed asap and let you know how they run Something I'm looking for tho, is something like the L230, but all it does is boot a RDP connection to a TS server. Like a super small thin client... that would would be awesome

Hi Guys I have an interesting question here for you, We have a staff member who would like to have her first name changed on the system, she's decided she would like to go by her traditional name instead of her christian name. The way our accounts work is: firstinitialsurname, so mine would be nparker. this is also the case for their home folders and email addresses. What is the easiest way to make the change? Create a new account and move all her documents and email across? Rename her account? then how do i go about renaming her email account/address? Thanks guys!

We had numerous problems with Symantec as well, bloated, resource hungry AND didn't actually stop any viruses Had a few staff take Flashdisks home from school and come back telling me their AVG free picked up heaps of stuff that Symantec didn't! Either way, we've just moved to F-Secure, in the process of rolling it out now, I'll post my findings when I've got my head around the system

I think its the latest drivers, I will make 100% sure tho. They use both wired and wireless, when they are working in their classrooms, they use the wired connections (point in every classroom) but when they go into areas like the library, staffrooms etc... then they use wireless... But, they go into an area with wireless, I *THINK* DHCP assigns the wireless an IP address (i'm not sure on the order these things happen, they always come to me after its happened) but the wired card still has an ip address assigned to it and the computer tries to use that instead of the wireless connection. ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew The wired ip address disappears and the wireless one renews itself and everything is fine, until they go and plug it into their classroom again, then I think it retains an ip for the wireless (even tho they are out of range)...

Thanks guys, sorted it out, turns out there are 2 things. The one server had the 'Sparing' option enabled, disabled that but it still showed 12GB, so I went back into the BIOS and there was something under [PCI Configuration] called [Memory Mapped I/O Start Address] It was set to 2.5GB, I set that to the lowest option, which was 1.5GB and... Hey Presto! I now have the full 16GB available!

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, I am going to reboot the server in about 45 mins (when everybody leaves) and check the BIOS regarding RAM and try out MemTest... Domino, Yes, I'm running Server 2008 64Bit. Synack & PeterW, if that is the case, they are reserved incase 2 of them get cooked, is there anyway to disable this? I actually keep 2x 1GB Registered RAM modules in the server room incase of emergency, so I don't need the server to reserve it for me!

Hey Guys, We just bought 2 new Intel SR1500ALR 1U Servers: 8x 2GB DDR2-667 FB DIMMS 2x Intel Xeon 2.66Ghz Quad Core I understand that the motherboard/processor/chipset/PCI Controller reserves some of the RAM, however, I installed Windows Server 2008 Standard and when I get into Windows, the system shows it only has 12GB available... Is it really necessary for the system to reserve 4GB??? I could deal with 2GB at a push, but 4GB? That 1/4 of the RAM gone before you've even booted into Windows? Has anybody else seen this before? Is there anyway to change this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Hi Guys I'm having an annoying problem with a whole bunch of the laptops on our network. They will come to me and tell me that its not connecting to the network, I'll ipconfig it, and it'll have DHCP IPs assigned to both the WiFi Connection and the Ethernet Connection, even tho the cable is unplugged... If I ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew the machine, the Ethernet Connection is then assigned a 0.0.0.0 address and the WiFi Connection picks up a new address and everything works. I can't remember now if the icon for the ethernet cable shows that the cable is unplugged or not, but I know it's not a hardware issue, because alot of the notebooks are doing it. Has anybody else experienced anything similar? It's like windows isn't checking the connection and isn't detecting that the connection is lost? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm in the process of moving to a new 2007 Exchange Server. What I've done so far is install the new server and add it to the domain, then I followed these steps to install Exchange: How to Install Exchange 2007 in an Existing Exchange Server 2003 Organization I don't know if this will help you at all? -Sorry, It took me a while to reply so I missed your comments inbetween regarding Exchange 2000/2003-

Hello everybody Please can I have some suggestions before I monumentally screw up my network... We currently have a (Steadily Failing) 2003 (not R2) server which is the DC and runs AD, DNS, DCHP & Exchange 2003. [Fileserver] I have setup a new 2008 DC Server, added it to the domain and DCPromo'd it. Everything seems to be working fine. [DCServer-01] I have also setup a new 2008 Server and added it to the domain with the intention of making it the Exchange Server. [ExchangeServer] I am about to move the DHCP onto the new DCServer-01 which shouldn't cause too many issues. Now, what should be my next step? Ultimately I need to demote FileServer and throw it down some stairs, so I need to make sure that all Domain related things (All the FSMO Roles) have been moved over onto DCServer-01. [Just a sidenote before anybody has a moment, after the new DC and Exchange servers are setup, I will be setting up a 2nd backup DC Server) And I need Exchange and all the mailboxes etc moved onto ExchangeServer. I am confident I am able to move the FSMO Roles but am afraid if I do anything in the wrong order, I may destroy Exchange and/or the mailbox store. Thanks guys, appreciate any suggestions

We had a problem with GP applying because we had a 2nd Domain Controller (as a backup) and it was somehow taking control, but didn't have the logon scripts available. Just out of interest, how are you doing the Code of Conduct?? I'm looking for a way of doing it @ our college

Hi Everyone I have a question for you regarding Laptops and their use by staff @ home. Our laptops are joined to the domain and their active directory accounts are added to the administrators group on their machines. This gives them full access to whatever they want to do on the local machine (any issues, I just re-ghost). Everything works fine while they're connected (bar a few issues with wireless/wired connectivity clashes or them not connecting the cable BEFORE switching it on) However, they are all complaining that when they go home and turn their laptops on, it takes a few mins to get the the logon screen (i.e. the "Preparing Network Connections", "Applying Settings" etc etc...) and then another few minutes to log on etc before they are able to work. While I know this is due to the machine looking for the domain, is there anyway I can improve this? Perhaps change the amount of time it spends looking for the domain? Something? Anything!

Hey guys, just a follow up for those that are interested: It turns out its the individual network ports on the notebooks. I have no idea what's caused it or if there's a fix besides replacing the motherboard of the notebook. Basically it will not communicate if the cable to the switch is over a certain length, not sure of the exact distance, but it seems to be over 30m? Put a switch in at the end of the cable and use a 1m patch lead to connect the laptop and it works.

We use a free font called "Free3of9" or something to that effect... You simple enclose your code in *'s which get read as the start and stop characters by the scanner, ie. *1234* It works and has worked with all the books in our library and has been read by all our barcode scanners without a problem. Edit: We are able to print these barcodes from any laser printer and they are readable (haven't tried any deskjets)

We had a way of using Excel to generate a CSV file, then imported that somehow, I'll try find the instructions for you, did it about 5 years ago when our DC died...
