  1. Where do you get yours from. It's that time of year again and I am looking at alternative suppliers. Xp and office 2003 with Visio Frontpage and Encarta is what I am looking for. Any advice on suppliers is appreciated.
  2. @DMcCoy you should come over and see us Jake and I are only in portsmouth.
  3. I have no problem with anyone that disagrees with my opinion, none at all.
  4. You are Right Grumbledook it is getting too hot. I will chill now.
  5. This is a forum is it not for people who work in education, yet you want me to censor my replies so as to not hurt peoples feelings when I disagree with what people say. I am not here to endear myself, I am here to offer advice , seek it and offer opinions. And newbie? you have only been a member of this forum for 18 days more than me. Surely you don't stoop as low as calling a someone a forum newbie or value their opinions based upon how long they have been a forum member, I didn't realise I had wandered onto a counterstrike forum LOl R0ffl3 1111!!elevntee1 My views are exactly that an opinion, if you take exception to that then thats a personal problem and not mine. I can take criticism. I get paid to do everything in the school, cabling AV installs projectors the works. My opinion is if you are able to take 4 weeks off during athe summer you do not have a massive workload, thats my opinion and I stand by it. I am sorry plexar I won't confuse you with being a technician again.
  6. It's not a case of that, I just take exception to people who claim they have a massive workload and dont have time to do cabling and other work when the real reason is essentially they are just a Term time only Technician.
  7. ok Plexer is having 3 weeks off so he is really only part time then during the holiday, the reason he does not have time to do cabling as he says is because he is off for 3 weeks not the fact as he claims thats he is too busy. some of us are lucky to have 1 week off and we get far more done in the summer AND manage to do our own cabling.
  8. What do you do then during the six weeks summer break that takes so much time?
  9. Most of the companies that give you a 25 year Guarantee won't be around in the 25 years so that pretty worthless. Suppose it depends on the person here we like to go the extra mile and reinvest the money saved back into IT for the benefit of the kids. Great thread though.
  10. Path!!!? We have a drill that cost £899.99 if that helps.
  11. in a word, yes, don't you? I would have thought anyone running a large enterprise size network would at least a basic knowledge in how to install cabling for the said networks.
  12. Don't need to get quotes, Jake and I install everything ourselves, we do not subcontract anything.
  13. What time constraints you have made 1097 posts on at least 1 web forum since nov 2005 and you moan about time constraints External cat5 is solid core and shielding so as to not attract lightning.
  14. In what way would it prevent you going forward with the ict plan, no one has given a single reason as to why you have to go fibre (apart from the obvious distance limitations), we have had grounding thrown up and even the amazing theory that cat5 can only go upto 100mbps. Please someone give me a decent reason apart from fibre being used as a buzz word for not using Cat5.
  15. 5-10 years, yea I would tell you that as well if I was trying to sell you a load of kit. And funny but last time I checked my Cat5 backbone was running at 1gig not 100mbps. Have you not heard about cat5e Gigabit switches in them parts yet.
  16. Whats future proof about fibre, nothing really. It's future proof if you can afford the infrastructure to upgrades, so unless you are able to install fibre yoursleves it's very costly and very costly to upgrade. In the Becta Tech Spec for Institutional Infrastructure its states that Fibre shoul;d only be used for lengthy spans (i assume over 100m) but the downside to it is that it cant carry power and is expensive. Sarcasm I love it. How many on her actually install their own Cat5e or Fibre, or do you just pay someone to do it?
  17. Fibre does not auto sense speed and is more of a pain in the arse to upgrade than Cat5. Cat5 is not slower unless you pay to have top of the range fibre which I doubt a school could afford it. I have fibre here and am slowly replacing it with cat5. Best thing I ever did.
  18. I still don't understand why you have an aversion to using copper.
  19. So when would you use External Cat5E then or i that a product on the market that is totally useless?
  20. Do your admin users need to access curriculum resources then? I would have imagined it would be the other way around? I realise that all schools operate differently, but I thought the days of MIS purely being the domain of the office staff was a thing of the past? Just curious. Our teachers do not have access to Sims in the classroom, they can't be trusted to use it properly and securely. They can only access it in the staffroom on 3 admin machines but even those are set to shutdown after 15mins of inactivity.
  21. Nope, 24/7 they are never shutdown unless something requires then to be rebooted.
  22. Disease

    Net-runna

We have Deepfreeze already. And what a great program it is.
  23. Sounds very good and useful, post it up for us when you are done so we can plagiarise it
  24. We have 2 seperate networks essentially and thats the way it will stay, they are joined via a V-LAN which allows Admin to access curr. but not the other way. The LEA can kick or scream all they want they wont be joined into one domain. Then leave the ball in their court. They leave workstation open - their problem if data gets leaked. Careful with that way of thinking as you may find that you are the one who takes the can for breaches of Data Protection. They would not get done it would be down to whomever is in charge of data protection and seeing as you run the servers you may find its you.
