Play WOW on Bloodhoof server, I have characters ranging from lvl 60 downwards. I also play Counter Strike Source Day of Defeat Source and Battlefield 2 I played SWG from beta onwards but left when they butchered it, I also played Ultima Online for 6 years.

We have an Admin and curriculum network seperated by a V-LAN on our switch. Admin can access Curriculum but Curriculum can not access Admin.

I am in this week, got to finish kitting out the New Art Rooms. I am however in by myself as Jake is off on Paternity Leave for a month. I bought Deepfreeze 5 weeks ago, not got round to installing it yet, looks good though. My plans for this year are: 32 pc room rekit, new base units and tft's. Set up wireless network to take 64 mobile laptops so we have 2 floater units of 32. Thats all the mjor things I will be able to fit in this year, alongside VLE's emails for kids and all the other junk Jake and I have to do.

Jake and I have a Moodle server set up at the moment although today I was seriously looking at Sharepoint Server. I have setup Sharepoint on another server to compare them both side by side. At the moment we are under severe pressure and threats from our LEA saying that we will be non compliant and that we will alienate ourselves if we do not go with their solution, theirs is Netmedia's MyDesktop which is a pile of crap far too confusing for the layman to navigate and they are estimating will cost us 3k a year. At the last meeting with the Head of ICT for Portsmouth LEA I told him we were going down the Moodle route, he has taken that back to his Head of Education for Portsmouth LEA who has subsequently started sending scare mongering emails direct to the Head to try and scare her into going with their solution. My reasoning for their actions is that they HAVE to provide a VLE system regardless to any school actually paying into it and they are scared that they will lose money on it. The email read along these lines, "Solutions such as Moodle will most likely not be compliant with educational requirements and therefore will cost the school thousands of pounds in additional expense when you have to move to a compliant service. It does not support single logon (load of crap as Shibboleth do a Moodle add-on) and therefore will not be compliant." At the meeting the other day they were going on about single logon and I said to so you are going to integrate your VLE with our Active Directory logon account? No they will get a new password. So it's not really a single logon then? Yes because... losers they are.

We run ISA 2004 with the LEa proxy, the thing to remember is as Ric syas and thats to set the upstream proxy to your LEA proxy, this is just a tick box for use upstream and type in the LEA proxy IP, then point all clients to your ISA. You need 2 Nic's in the machine 1 to contact the upstream proxy set with a static IP and another set with a static IP to take the requests from your client. We operate a whitelist so there is no issue of kids looking at anything we dont sanction.

Our oldest is our fileserver, about 2 years old and being replaced very shortly (when I finish it) with a shiny new HP dual Xeon system. Infact I am currently replacing 6 of the 10 servers with 4 shiny new dual Xeon systems. I will then have all my servers under a year old. I like the quake server idea, I might run a CS Source server instead, never was a fan of quake.

We have an SLA for Windows, Office, visio and frontpage including encarta. Cost me 7k a year. We keep our machines under a year old (well theguts of them anyway).

Last summer the Head wanted a display in the hall to play movies and music, display powerpoints and other such things during lunch times. So we bought a 50" top of the line Sony Plasma Screen, decent seperates sound system a video and DVD and a Mediacentre pc to connect it all up. We had to build a custom cabinet to house all this. Toal cost of the job around 7k Times used since summer last year 3. Utter utter utter pointless waste of time and money. A teacher used it the other day and complained that he did not like the wireless mouse.

They just want us to pay for their system, its the way they work. Same with emails, they ban all webbased emails on the broadband filter and say it's ok you can buy ours.

The enterprise edition allows you to control all network machines in one go.

Student use of Hotmail is not a problem as we use a whitelist so pupils can only access sites we open up. Our problem is with the staff who use hotmail a lot and have built up numerous contacts over the years with it. One of Portsmouth LEA's excuses is that hotmail is insecure and virus ridden, which again is a load of crap.

The LEA told us that it was a BECTA requirement that Hotmail and other web based email is blocked. I called Becta and spoke to the ISP Accreditation Manager and he told me is was a Crock of S**T. When I challenged the LEA about it they refused effectively to change their stance on it.

I am going to order 300 licenses tomorrow, the cost is around £3,800. You can keep specific areas thawed while the rest of the files are frozen to allow for updates and such.

We have 2 HP Managed switches HP2524, the rest of the swicthes are Linksys wich are great even more so now that Linksys is a sub division of cisco. £200 for an unmanaged full gig switch is not bad.

I am just about to buy it used the 60 day demo and it looked fantastic. It freezes the machine, so if anything goes wrong with the configuration of it for example, a virus rips through the systems, you just restart the machine and it back to normal. On the test machine I deleted the registry and most of the system 32 folder, rebooted the machine and it was fine and everything was back in its place.

We now use the SWAN network for our 10mb line, much better than SEGFL.

I feel your pain ninjabeaver. At my school, we get a flash cash budget of 26-30k thats just for me to order odds and sods. Then we have ICT central curriculum, ICT central Admin and an ICT Central budget. This year from the first of April I have spent around 120k. There is no way you can run an effective network without the ability to upgrade and replace parts on the fly. When I first came to the school we had 0 stock, nothing in the way of spares, now we have had to move storage locations twice due to the increased storage capacity requirements we now need. Keep on at them and good luck.

Had loads of problems with reliability on Promethian Boards, we swapped to using SMARTboards and they have been fantastic.

A mate of mine has just left there he said they are the worst company he has ever worked for. They also screw up alot of the projects they do.

Not had any experience with them, I use Insight for IWB and we install ourselves so save there as well.
