From our point of view (jake and mine) sims.net is crap. I think it all boils down to how much you use the software and at our school we use all aspects of it far more than other schools (Capita's Words not mine). We get out SIMS support through our LEA which is crap as well, so all in all there are more negative factors to sims than positive, but hey it's still in beta.

So are a lot of people, but they have enough experience to professionally set up a schools network. Written paper qualifications mean nothing really. Most 'newbies' are not trying to set up from scratch a network in an educational establishment they have at least some fundimental knowledge of Active Directory and Group policies to let them hit the ground running. It may sound unkind but I say it to protect the professionals who work in schools for often shitty wages being tarnished with the branding as amateurs because Semi retired people like to get in over their heads, which it seems to me you are. There is no benefit to the children or the teachers in a poorly set up network where people can do what ever they want, even more so when the kids are at an early stage of their ICT development. I wish you all the luck in the world though.

I think you should seek a professional to come in and sort the system out as you are doing the children a disservice at the moment, I am sorry but thats the way I see it from the subject of your posts.

I would Transfer all the roles first before demoting the PDC. Saves any hassle if something goes wrong. Dont forget to transfer the Schema Master and the Global Cat. We are actually doing a similar thing at the moment with our Admin fileserver. Ours has the addition problem of our old FS being a 2000 box and the new FS is going to be 2003.

I have just bought LanSchool and its had a great reaction from teachers. Even if the pupil shuts down the pc it restarts in exactly the same way as when it was switched off, so if the teacher had shut off the mouse keyboard and screen it would reboot in that state. http://www.lanschool.com/

When you say firewall what exactly do you mean? ISA Server or something similar? LEA Firewall or is it just a switch with seperate VLAN's

You can set up Trust links with the domains through AD Domains and Trusts. Are the domains on different sites or are they on the same site?

We just had to restore exchange on a rebuild from backups but we were using Veritas with the Exchange Agent and it's restored fine in the end. We had a few problems but it was ok. The main problem was restoring exchange without the mailboxes and then having to push them over from tape 1 box at a time.

ADMT worked fine for me as well. It's the way to go.

Aye, check with your isp or firewall provider, make sure that they have not closed any ports by accident. Does happen sometimes.
