  1. They are NTFS
  2. @ timzim Aye that’s one possibility solution id prefer not to just rip the HDD out until there are no other options @ mac_shinobi Did that one earlier cleared 500MB but thanks for the idea, it lets people login but doesnt fix the larger problem of 20GB missing
  3. I dont think it's the pagefile thats showing up as 700MB but ill give it a try, in the morning
  4. @ Willott The System reports low disk space (in the bottom right hand corner) and on the properties on the C:, sorry bad description of the explorer, I selected all the files and folders on the root of C: and did properties. @Librarian System restore is disabled @ Potato Nope, the fault was reported because people can no longer logon as there is no free space to copy the profile localy
  5. Bit of a strange one, we have got several pc's that are running out of disk space for no apparent reason, they are fairly old 6-7 years, and 2 different makes of pc and are running Windows XP SP2. The disks are 20GB and 30GB. The computers use up all the space that there is but when checking how much space is used using treesizefree, WinDirStat and unhiding everything and doing it threw the explorer it only shows that there is about 7GB used. Disk cleanup only clears some space because of the compression and the space is used up again over about a week. When we did a chkdsk nothing was found wrong. Any thoughts?
  6. We found that Volume Shadow Copy resolved the problem of student deleting work (with the least amount of work for us) students are able to recover their own work without any work on our part. It’s no substitute for proper backups but it’s a nice intermediate, we get no restore jobs any more for anything less than 1 month and you can set it up to take snapshots more often (it won’t help if your worry is students doing the work then deleting it between snapshots)
  7. i went for it as well good luck AXE
  8. Are you using lesion monitor as well, we found after applying update to 7.122 our server went to 50-100% CPU whenever anyone was logged on. Our LEA applied patch 13436 (not sure what it was nor can I see it on support net) but that sorted our problems
  9. The Sims ADP is nice and it can create users for you but it does have a couple of quirks, the first, and I’m not sure if this is due to our site, is it requires added permissions in AD to create the users, but lower OU's don’t Inherit the permissions correctly. also we had a problem where a change of name in Sims resulted in the users display name changing but because of it doing this is change the name on the Exchange mail box causing the backups to fail (using backup exec), all working as intended but it’s not possible to turn this off without playing with the VBS that do all the creating and Capita force you to use the business analysts to help with solutions costing a small fortune. I would be interested to know if anyone else is having these problems with the ADP.
  10. We currently have Conficker floating about somewhere not sure where. We followed this Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: removing W32/Confick and Mal/Conficker In my experience you have to be slow and methodical to remove it. We are just left to find which wireless device has it on.
  11. We hold data on Sims backups as maniac does, also when checking with the major exam boards they say that they won’t ask for information relating to any course work (electronic or otherwise) past 6 months after the results date (for the longest). We currently keep user areas for 1 year for students and staff. Emails are kept on a 1 year rolling backup as part of our monthly backups. These are all backed up to tapes and stored off site.
  12. I'm very intrested in something like this any ideas?
  13. We use Serif here, deployed threw GPO haven’t had a single problem with it. We paid about £650 last year for 60 concurrent users. Students and teachers just picked it up they also offer teachers a copy for £10
  14. Try running the attached bat file it will remove any of the components of Sophos, restart then try to reinstall. I find that that solves 99% of all Sophos problems. Be aware that the bat file will remove all of sophos antivirus don’t run it on your enterprise server. Sophos remove all.zip
  15. We come across this very rarely so we use initial.surname(year there year group started the school) How are you naming the accounts? We use first 3 letter of there forename first 5 of their surname then the year their year group started (it yr 7 = 2008) Works for us with 1200 students
  16. I've been looking at something like this and remember seeing this problem with DFS after update SP2 - MSFN Forums failing that take a look at Error message when you try to open a mapped DFS folder after the computer comes out of standby in Windows XP Service Pack 2: "<Drive Letter>:\ is not accessible" hope that helps
  17. This is the way we do it, we have to add the user to out global address list to add their email mail box to an admins outlooks but thats easy. Just add the account of who needs to see it. Also make sure your AUP covers it otherwise your opening up a can of worms
  18. We get this when one member of staff lets another member of staff use their laptop, and because of this it syncs their files and the other member of staffs files we tend to just clear the cache to sort it. Not sure if that the right thing to do tho
