  1. thanks for the help None of the fixes appear to work. I have tried all the microsoft recommended stuff and it still runs at 100% (definately something to do with updates)
  2. kinda related topic: our server will not delete the older shadows automatically, it just keeps creating them twice a day and then increasing the quota to allow for more to be created. HELP!
  3. up the processor to 2Ghz and i would go for 4gb or more for ram. we have about that spec and we could do with a bit more ram!!
  4. ok i have a really big problem. The computer in my "office" is reporting at svchost.exe is running at 100% all of the time! This is the one that runs for SYSTEM not Local or Network. What can i do it is really slowing my computer down. After about 20 mins is goes back to 0 and then jumps up again 5-10 mins later!
  5. Can anyone recommend a good wireless mono laser printer. It needs to hold about 250-350 sheets of A4. nothing fancy but cheap toner. Please do not recommend a HP Laserjet 1022nw cos we already have that and they are now a nightmare to get hold of! Thanks
  6. Any reason why we cannot get VB Scripts to run as a log on script on our server? We have entered the path to AD but it just doesn't want to run on logon. The script is definately stored in the NETLOGON folder!
  7. how do i get them 2 scripts to run at the same time/work together? Ideally i want the network drives and printers to be set-up at log on
  8. Can anyone send me an example of a log on script that connects user's drives, adds a few printers and sets a default printer? Thankyou!
  9. Take a look at this attachment. This has not been edited in any way! Look at the prices of the processors and total price. this is for an ordinary workstation
  10. The desktops and laptops can still access the server, but very slowly. It's like the servers are taking all the power for the backups - but are not reporting that they are using a lot of power. The servers have been in about 2 months now and it has only started happening about 5 weeks ago. But no real changes have happened to the servers in that time
  11. We have 2 servers (smallish primary school) and make backups weekly on to tapes (4 for each server). Only problem is the entire network almost freezes whilst the servers are backing up. The servers are both brand new and we are using the built-in backup facility as we don't have any spare budget for software. Both servers continue functioning and there is little activity during the time of the backups (this includes network activity) but everything just stops except the servers. What is going on?? This does need to be fixed because every Friday the entire network stops for 3-5 hours!
  12. Very true, our policy here is if it's broke - tuff. and to hell with learning as long as all the areas where families go look nice everything will be ok. All our admin machines are top of the range computers with brand new flat screens, digital phones, the works. Our family room has everything there heart's desire. We are now going to pay for a brand new flat screen touchable display in reception, when 2 classrooms have been without projectors for almost 7 months now!!!! If you haven't guessed our school is very showy!
  13. not very helpful!;-)
  14. Hello I know this is a weird request, but has anyone got any software/ideas of how i can make one of our computers run slower. It is a very good spec, but at the moment it is being treated like a server - we would like this to change but the person in charge of this has said that they would leave it. We do not want to remove any hardware just set the computer to constantly do something to decrease it's performance noticably!!
  15. We are planning to implement Vista to our school in the next year(ish). What we would like to know is how vista will work with our roaming profiles and also what benefits we will lose/gain from using windows server 2003 and what we will lose/gain with 2008. If anyone can fill me in this would be great!! (we will be using vista business, we have a network running at 100 mbps (including the servers - no money for a gbit switch a min.) and the servers are almost brand new, but we don't mind purchasing another for 2008)
  16. Can anyone recommend me a good colour networkable laser printer. It needs to be able to do at least 3000 pages a month. Cheap toner and preferably be able to duplex. It doesn't need to do fancy paper sizes or have fancy add-on's (wireless, bluetooth, photo's, etc...) Looking for around £100-400 Thanks!

    Servers

We have that sort of set-up here. We got some very cheap RM servers to do the job. They are 2GHz dual core processor, 2GB of RAM, 2x500GB hard drives. They are absolutley fine (although i would recommend getting about 3-4 GB RAM) We have about 70-80 connected at one time and this does not affect the performance at all. (we are currently running the servers at 100mbits because our 1gpit switch went funny last week and we cannot afford to replace it until end of march!
  18. I have an ipod which contains all of my music. recently my computer hard drive was completely destroyed and i had to reinstall windows. I couldn't get into the computer far enough to backup any work, so i have lost my music on my computer hard drive. Is there any way that i can't connect my ipod to my computer and get it to copy the music to my computer. HELP!
  19. Has anyone implemented a pre-n wireless network. Could they please tell me why? We have just had it recommended to use by a "professional". The fact that it is still not verified makes me feel that it could still be dangerous as well as the point that the standard may change so any technology may not be compatible. Should i stay away until it is officially released or just install it? Also, does anyone know if n works with g technology (such as a g card in a laptop) surely it just works at a lower speed. (we have been told we will need to put external wireless cards into the laptops to make it work with the access points.
  20. Ok, our school has just brought a brand new photocopier. Just found out today that the blasted thing is an inkjet. It takes 1000ml cartridges that cost £250 for 1. (it is colour so it had 4 in total). We have worked out that it costs 16p per page (black and white). Haven't even attempted to work out a colour page. Also just found out that the photocopier has it's own computer. Not some built in chip + HDD. But an actual computer with tower and everything. The school has literally brought a computer + scanner + printer for £6,000! The photocopier in question is a RISO HC-5500 (i think!). If the school had actually asked me or my manager we would never of recommended this copier. I don't understand why we are never consulted about anything technological. The head brought some new software over the weekend, we were never asked if it would work on the school computers! I just hate it when we are asked to set something up even when it never knew that it had been ordered. Surely all technological equipment should be run passed us before it is even considered.
  21. Yeah - that's what we need. I have just been told that it will cost £65 to make a new call group.
  22. How does your phone system work at school? Do you only have 1 phone in your office for everyone to use or do you have 1 each. If you have 1 each do they all go through the same line or are they on different numbers. I really want our phones set up so that they will both ring at the same time, but work on different numbers. (this is what receptions phones do) Any one got the same problem/any ideas
  23. Don't worry about it. Staff here just like a moan. One week they couldn't find anything to say so they thought of the excuse "The printer in the corridor is too slow" - this particular printer has a first page out time of 3-5 seconds and a print speed of 40 ppm. (it is mono). So we didn't even bother looking into the matter. If staff are complaining that your network is slow this means it is taking to long to log on because i have filled my profile up with rubbish. OR. I have double clicked on an icon 17 times so now all my processing power is used up, but don't worry - i am not an idiot or impatient. Does this solve your problem??
  24. I am so sorry but i am going to have to recommend the RM nBook ultralight They are brilliant! Really sorry edugeek users!!
