Gatt: I love the way the white list will fit with the school moto "Bringing knowledge to life"... I predict alot of support calls on Monday. Have the excuse ready "Show me where the website .... is in your lesson plan/scheme of work and I'll allow it" Because we all know teachers manage the students use of the net rather than "go on google and type..."

I had this problem with a student creating a file name and folder tree longer than windows can handle. in the end I had to map a drive to shortern the directory tree run a search for *.* to find what was in there and delete it that way. RD should work though

Hi, We fitted a new room this september went for hi spec Dell machines and have had no Hardware issues but have Software issue in buckets it would appear that no music software likes to work with each other and definatly does not like the resrictions of working on a network. If you want a good keyboard/midi solution have a look at m-audio ozone http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MAudioOzone-main.html. They have midi input and various outputs and have a small footprint.

Can anyone recomend Really Bright Projectors...
Face-Man replied to Face-Man's topic in Recommended Suppliers
chears for this it really useful stuff. We have had blinds in the room already but they frequently got vandlised (so it's not just the mice) so it now has electric security shutters to keep the computers in and bad guys out .And the sky light is a real problem basically imagine a green house and you are not far wrong. I've been told they have to be brighter for students who may have a visual impairment but becta seem sensibly be concerned for the people who stair directly ino the lense. And as with all these things it comes down to money ... -
Our architechs have designed a room with Glass every where 2 entire walls of it and skylights just for good messure. This is wonderful apart from needing to use an interactive whiteboard in it. Our current Sony PL15 have done well but are coming upto 4 years old and I can find them a good home elsewere. So anybody know of a really really bright projector going cheap [canary yellow not required] . preferably with a good lamp life.

Hi thanks for the ideas I'll give them a go. I've got control back by taking ownership of the root of their home share and then propogating child permissions. and will implement the GPO change and see how that goes. As for powerpoint what we have found is that unless the user has full cotrol it saves 0k files it would appear powerpoint effectivley saves the file twice so if you just have write permsions it is no enough...

I guess it depents on the number of clients you have and how much resiliance you want. we have two domain controlers per network a Nas and San for file storage and 2 sims servers (total 8 8) ) but are looking to create a forest so that data can be retrieve from either domain. This plus 450 clients and three members of overworked staff...

Hi, I've just noticed that a few students have managed to reset the file permissions on their home drive to deny access for administrators to access them. Currently I've no idea how they are doing this (I thought right click was disabled in explorer) but is there a way to give them full control (so powerpoint can save) but not allow permisson changes ? Shoul I be looking at a gpo change (we have win 200 server at present) any ideas ? :?

Registration using PDAs / swipe cards - recommendations?
Face-Man replied to pete's topic in MIS Systems
We use Bromcom but I see you have regected it. Personally I would move to a system based on IWB as soon enough every classrooms going to have one. And it saves having to support portable devices... -
Personally I prefer smart... though I found out 25% of the company is now owned by Microsoft. That's why they are tightening up on there software licence which makes it illigal to use it unless your school owns a smart board and you are using it to create resources for that board see http://www.smarttech.com/support/software/takeHome.asp. which stop you usinging on a different IWB. The new version of the software is a lot better (eg Gallery search) you can get that at http://www.smarttech.com/support/software/index.asp

Face-Man replied to adamyoung's topic in How do you do....it?
crc-ict writes : If it's from the BBC or Channel 4 you are if it's for educational purposes One of our local school even got permission to digitize them for staff to use on their white boards quote taken From http://www.bbc.co.uk/foi/docs/historical_information/archive_policies/Public_Access_Policy_IA1.htm It also gets around anyone that worries about copyright as well -
My boss wants to get his class using Skype and I'm a bit nervous about letting year 10 lose with it. Has anybody used it in their organisations and are there any things I should be aware of....

Mind Mapping Software - (Inspiration,Freemind,etc)
Face-Man replied to flyinghaggis's topic in Educational Software
We use Openmind2 here and it work really well. When I showed our head she was straight on it doing school development plan and staff handbook. It's most useful as it can output to multiple formats and has a great timeline feature. You can download a 30 day trial but the full product cost quite a bit If you want a simple (no pun intended) product why not try 2connect really good for special needs kids or primary -

This is great stuff. And I'd be happy to help (If I still in the same job next year) but I thought I might raise a few questions. If a company donates do they get an assurance that the pepole on the stand won't be honest about (slagg off) their product ? I realise this is only relavant if we tap into some big company (every body likes the little guys) but there legal guys will have somebody signing their life away. I would suggest a standard no endorsement stance (aka Switzerland (unless 6 figures sums are involved at least)) with the phrase any view expressesd is that of an indvidual and does not reflex the view of edugeek's (appart from a healthy degree of synical attitude towards teachers). Also could I put forward the strap line of "Have you tryed turning it on and off again if so Start here" total stolen I know but that what ICT is for ....

why not setup a new ou with a GPO stoping the students from locking the computers. Then when user name "a" leaves the computer locked move them into that OU so they can't do it again. This way your responsible students (I think If met one or two) still have the abbility and thouse that abuse it don't. If the teachers complain ask them to come up with a better solution

moved away 4 years ago and have never looked back (apart from the odd snigger at bett  ). So long ago any advice would be out of date as to how to extract but I would just plan to moth ball their server(s) and get new ones so you can run test before moving your clients over..

Which VLE Moodle, Digital Brain, Oracle, Fronter, SIMS LG
Face-Man replied to ITWombat's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Hi, This is a really important debate. The government, Becta DFES are really keen for a all encompansing solution so a kid can go to any school and get their work or at least know how to use the VLE. This means mega money is going to be around and so crap companies are going to give flashy presentation and win a contract and then we will have to make it work. The moodle commuinty needs to get in their first and partion the disition makes in LEAs and above to implement the best solution with support for schools that don't have the tech to do it themselves. The DFES need to listen to the people that use technology in education rather than thouse who talk a good talk... Rant over.. -
Pupils puling out rj45 cable to stop scripts and policys
Face-Man replied to MManjra's topic in Wireless Networks
Quick warning .. Don't use IanB script if you have roaming profiles that are created when the use first logs in... could make for interesting support requests .. "have you tried switching it on and off again... what it does it by itself now.."
