Screen recorder is the obvious solution. Did this long before it was ever an embedded feature. We have Plus licencing - so it does not impact us and I'd recommend it. Meet recoding is only one of many things you get. The super powers you get in the admin console alone make it worth for us. I'd not cope without the investigation tool now. You also get Enhanced Desktop Security - so can manage Windows devices directly in the admin console. We buy our licences from C-Learning, but any Google partner can give you a quote.

Technically maybe - practically no. To do this you would have to flash a third party BIOS and risk bricking the device and forget about any warranty. I think they also only have 16 or 32Gb or local storage - so not practical for Windows. They are decent Chromebooks - use them as such - and come with the management licence.

OK I'll try to share some wisdom while watching GBBO. As a Trust we have several secondaries that are 1:1with Chromebooks (staff and students), plus 1000's in primaries. Before considering this, make sure your network can happily handle 1000's of devices online at the same time. Obvious I know - but normally the first thing we have to do when taking on new schools. Personally I'd not go 1:1 Chromebooks if you are O365 - they shine in a Workspace setup. To do it you need total buy in the SLT, governors, parents and teachers and it needs to be embedded into the ethos of the school and pedegogy. Technically deploying 1000 Chromebooks is dead easy. Getting the to be used effectively is another matter entirely. We offer varies options to for guardians - from buy all the way to day loans. We get around a 90% buy rate. But that's taken time and a lot of parental we engagement. Basically it takes a fair amount of work to to get off the ground and then to keep running. However, once done tech becomes a seamless part of lessons and computer rooms largely become irrelevant. We do still have some specialist facilities - some Mac's setup with Google login for photography A level for example (although it's coming to ChromeOS). Printing was mentioned - 1:1 does massively reduce this - but most stuff is on classroom. But we sync users from Workspace to Papercut. I'd have proper be on and off-site filtering - we use Securly and their parents app - super popular with parents. Give staff super powers to control pupil Chromebooks - we use either Securly classroom or Hapara Teacher Dashboard. Anyways - feel free to get in touch if you want to discuss. Roger

We have an opt in option for guardians which states that while they are signed in with a private account they take responsibility for all activities on the Chromebook. Only ever an option for ones they own as well.

That's not expected behaviour. Raise a support ticket and Google will look at your policies and determine what is wrong.

The setting does work - but it might not do what you think it does (to be fair the description is not entirely clear). The setting is only suitable for heavily multiuser devices - so for us day loan Chromebooks, where the student forgets their own. The setting will remove the user on logoff or power down. IT also locks the free storage at about 2Gb - varies a little on the machine - but that all you will ever get (this is not explicitly stated in any documentation - but Google told me some time ago that's how it worked). So fine for quick ah-hoc use - but not if you have users with loads of extensions or Android apps. So the situations you might use this setting are quite narrow. The use case mentioned above or say at a primary where you are using QR codes to login (its required then) - that's it for us. Don't use on the regular trolley - leave ChromeOS to do its stuff and manage the space. If that does not work, you can wipe user profiles to release space directly from the admin console or use GAM to do it in bulk or even script it to happen every so often. So my advice would be to not use the setting unless you are using QR codes. However, you can use the setting to hide profiles - so you just get a login screen and not a long list of users.

People simply fear anything new. We have 10000's of users all on Drive and on a day to day basis it gives zero issues. Training for new staff is important and pointing them to how to guides. We have the occasional ticket about how to move X folder or file from A to B - but thats it. I would recommend going Plus for licencing which wheich means you get the god like magic powers of the investigation tool.

We use Drive (and all of Workspace) across out Trust. Local server shares no long exist at most sites and have been replaced by Shared Drives. Shared Drive access is generally control by Group membership, which is in turn normally a function of OU membership and auto populated with GAM scripts. PCs at our primaries (and some secondary's) are managed by Google Enhanced Desktop Security - so everything is done in one admin console (not Azure) + everything SSO by default. Drive App set to launch on startup. Where we have local AD still we use Goggle Credential Provider for Windows to provide SSO. Migration of files from local shares to Shared Drives we have done using the Google Drive App on a server and just left it to do its stuff. I'd recommend embracing the entire Google ecosystem and not just Drive rather than a bit of MS stuff and a bit of Google stuff.

Just upgraded my home PC from 10 Pro to 11 Pro - did not take long and it all seems to work fine. Downloaded the ISO direct from MS and fired up a VM on Virtual box and the ISO has all the flavours including 11 Edu which I installed. Enrolled with GCPW and all the policies seemed to work fine except for software deployment, just sits on downloading package, not sure why yet - will speak to Google about it at some point.

Confirmed by Google as a bug in the new settings. Source of the issue identified and they are working on a fix. A reference school is a programme run by Google - schools that have done cool stuff and Google has noticed. You get quite a few mugs and can stick a badge on your website! You do get to test new stuff and obviously get some contacts at Google you might not otherwise have.

Will work fine if you mark an OU as over 18. You can always manually disable the things they should not have access to. I think in this case its Google not testing something and being caught on the back foot by their own changes - hence support being clueless. Helps to know a few Googlers to berate...

Been onto some Google people. Apparently some of the services that are now not allowed kill the Drive App if not enabled. They are looking into it. Our Google Partner has just told use to bung the OUs back to over 18 to fix the issue for now.

Interesting. We have all of our student OUs marked as "Some or all users are under 18 years of age" and the Google Drive app works fine. Have you actually go it allowed in Apps > Google Workspace > Drive and Docs > Features and Applications > Google Drive for Desktop Got the latest version. I have know Google support to get it wrong (not often), but this would be all over all the various Google Workspace communities if it was a thing.

I've moved many schools into out Trust Google Workspace setup. Mail is fairly easy to migrate with the built in migration tools. We have ~20000 users and Gmail takes up almost zero of my time - pretty rock solid and very secure.
