Dave are you suggesting schools broadband can migrate LLN emails to an office 365 install? I'm fairly sure (but would be very pleased to be corrected) that Capita hold all the cards here, and each user would need to copy their email manually. There isn't a mass migration tool we can use unless capita give schools/LLN increased exchange access.

Had two demos. Quite a good system and theory has it, should be fairly hands off for my team. We're considering buying, and one of our local primaries already has.

I very much agree with your view Dave. Schools have a responsibility now to keep children and young people safe both in school and beyond. Schools have to start teaching safe & respectful use of the internet and this is more difficult without using the internet more fully. Monitoring is absolutely key. Why punish a whole school community because a small group can't stay on task. Show the pupils some trust, they'll probably reward you. Those that don't should be dealt with individually using normal school sanctions. Use it as an opportunity to teach at first, rather than to punish. I also agree that filtering must be age appropriate. We are currently with our RBC's level of filtering. They take the opposite view to me, filter lots, monitor very little (if at all to be honest). This situation will not be carrying on very long as the current contract comes to an end, and we can make independent choices on filtering/monitoring solutions. [Edit] Actually if anyone is of the same opinion as me regarding the filter/monitor balance and currently uses Lightspeed, I would love to hear from you. I need to understand how straightforward it is to regularly monitor users sat behind a lightspeed appliance. Please PM, or tweet me or something... Thanks

Standard USB mouse and keyboards will work. You will need a VGA/DVI adapter if you want to use a standard monitor. I'm fairly sure you don't need OSX Server, the standard OSX will work for Apple configurator. After that you'll need to have a think about if you want to use an MDM solution... Have you added your new vlan IP range to AD sites and services?

I've been using Vidahost of late. Their packages are reasonable and support has been good so far.

1:1 is a very expensive model. I'm slightly concerned that the technology is coming before the learning though in some of these cases. Tell me the learning need, and I'll find a technical solution. It's wrong in my humble opinion to find a device, and then look at how it fits into the T&L.

Until you change your domains mx records, no email will go to google. Your user names will include your domain though ([email protected]), which could cause confusion?

Sorry I haven't got a godaddy login, so can't help anymore than to say their domains do come with DNS hosting as advertised on their website. Perhaps check out their help section. You'll need to prove ownership and change your mx records to the ones provided by outlook.com. Sadly google apps don't have a free option for new personal/business signups anymore, however there are other options. I've just googled and found a few, but wouldn't know which to recommend. You might feel more comfortable to pay someone a couple of quid a month to host your email, if so you may be able to get some cheap web hosting which includes email, for the same sort of price. You'll need DNS hosting as previously stated. I wouldn't self host if I were you... too much work for very little reward. Your registrar (the company you bought your domain name from) will most likely host this for you within the cost of the domain. If not, someone like cloudflare, henet or pointhq will do it for free but there are loads of options here. You jusr set up your mx records on their dns servers. If you don't have a website, just don't put in an A record. In both cases you want email to work, when you need it. I always think this is better off left to the pro's rather than a box under the stairs.

I'm not the worlds leading authority on this but I think application control is coming in a future software version. Someone from smoothwall will probably confirm or deny shortly.

You need to create a WPAD file which you can then host on your ruckus controller or a web server. I've put some advice on my blog which is linked at the bottom of this post, but in short it's a script which the client can find using DNS or DHCP discovery methods. It works with varying degrees of success depending on which device you use. The only other options are to use a PAC file (which is excatly the same script as a WPAD file, but the client must be told where it is manually) or a transparent proxy.

I too was told 700mbit at the south leeds stadium meeting, but actually that was by a virgin rep rather than Leeds learning. I've also heard other figures, which I guess is why I asked the question. The network is contended at various points, but the fact that the LLN will not openly publish figures doesn't fill schools with confidence.

As I understand it, the only infrastructure continuing to be utilised after 31st March will be the LLNs Ja.net connection through Civic Hall. The biggest question about that is how big is the pipe? Virgin hope to be awarded the contract to provide Internet access to the LLN PSN network after current contract on the civic connection expires.

I think it's important to remember that most of the issues suffered by schools recently are due to Capitas infrastructure, rather than Leeds learning. However the LLN signed up to, and extended (twice?), a contract with Capita which included a five day SLA on firewall changes. Going forward Capita are not involved, but I'm yet to see a SLA from ICT4Leeds.
