Shirt and tie from starting here 9 years ago and it has had its effect on the staff as our IT team all wear shirt and tie (not forced through dress code) but because it looks professional for a business and this is what we are a business. T-shirts and shorts with flip-flops during the holidays when no staff are in is relaxing and this is what you will find me wearing then as for @webman just a smile is his answer when the holidays come around hehe!! ;D

@chrbb speak to Millenium sub £400 would get you some good spec units with 5 year warranty I can highly recommend them as I have used them for the past 6 years so the warranty does stand up and they do use good branded internal components. @webman will also recommend them too plus @sylv3r in fact a few NMs around our county have started using them. Don't forget to haggle with them as they can beat most every other supplier. Good hunting

Really enjoy working in the school environment after 26 years in industry but then @webman makes me laugh and we have good fun together but I know he is ready to move on to bigger things even though he does get all the freedom to explore different systems and implement ideas. He is an asset to the school and will miss him but will not hold him back but like he has said industry has not offered him the job he requires with the financial package to go. I on the other hand being of a mature age feel this would be the the last position I would like to find myself, cant be bothered with interviews and applying and CVs etc. If I was in a job that I didn't like of course then things would be different, i would probably go to B n Q and stack shelves and help other people with their DIY projects. #lovemyjob #lovemyteam

I too have had large files corrupted I have put it down to the WAN infrastructure and some of the secondhand hardware which is used throughout although this is just an educated guess. It could also be old BT circuits also as these too are used by our ISP which at this moment they are changing for their own black fibre circuit by circuit.

@zag: I'm not familiar with cachepilot but there should be some way of banning those IP addresses from accessing this particular site. You could setup in the DHCP a reserved scope of addresses which these computers belong too and they would always remain in this group that you set up on the cachepilot. Just an idea as I have said I am not familiar with it.

+1 for Tasc Software company as they have a good product at a very reasonable price and also have other software which will enhance the data management side of your school. The team are very friendly and any after sales service is excellent, very quick and responsive.

@mthomas08: I totally agree with you and commend your level of professionalism which has got you into the position you have at the moment. Yes we can all say things about the people around us but you have to look to yourself and no man is an island and people do feel pain but one has to become positive and realise that not one person knows it all and that is why we have forums like this one to offer help and guidance to everyone who asks. @anothernickname: I empathise with your situation but try to be positive about this, just imagine how this person feels, she could be out of her depth but she needs the support of all those around her not someone who thinks because they know more about IT than this person that they should make that persons life uncomfortable. Get to know this person better and take her into your confidence and maybe she might just realise what a mistake she has made and either resign or make things much better for you in the long run. I agree if she is totally incompetent then you have a duty to point out these things but not before you have had a chance to get to know her properly. Make a clean start and get to know her before passing judgement you may be in for a shock.

@DPrince: Could it be interpreted like the drink driving laws in this country whereupon if you are asked to give a specimen be it breath or blood and you don't give your consent you are prosecuted under the failure to give consent rule therefore meaning you are guilty of the said offence. If you have signed the schools AUP and the user is aware that their e-mails are monitored for inappropriate material then surely by this they are giving consent to the school by way of the HT to access their e-mail? You are just the tool (no offence intended) with which the HT uses to maintain the e-mail system. Could this not be your argument?

@witch: Is it the same user account that has the problem? Could it be their profile which has become corrupted? Does the user account have the necessary permissions to run the script? Have you ran a GPResult on the workstations/laptop which are working and compared them with the one that is not? I forget now (getting Old) but there is a free piece of software which will allow you to capture the boot process and any registry changes on boot up and login which may help you determine why the printer is being lost when this reg key is being added. Good hunting

@mcnallyfc: Have you looked at the virtulisation route? If you have a spare unit which has plenty of storage and will run Xenserver which is free this may give you all you need without effecting the "Live Network".

We have 2 Sans, one is a sun 7110 which is now supported by Oracle but I have heard they will be dropping the hardware side of things but luckily Hitachi will support anyone with an Oracle San which is good news as we also have a Hitachi SMS 100 which gives us 6.4Tb formatted space for student and staff data is connected direct from DCs and user servers via iSCSI and and our Sun 7110 is our virtualisation backend to which we have 2 but soon to be 3 Dell 2950s attached via ethernet through 2 D-Link Gb managed switches (working ok at the moment but may change for Juniper of similar spec). 12k for the both of them which should last us for the next ten years if we get as much use out of them that we have from our previous server hardware (nearly 10 years on Windows server 2000, yes and solid as a rock) Both are working very well, very quick and will suit our needs when we use them in anger in four weeks time when we migrate over to them. I can highly recommend them if that is the way you want to go. I looked at EMCs fibre SANs but to be honest I think unless you have huge storage needs and lots of students (more than 2000) then iSCSI will suffice.

We get nowt up here int North except maybe the odd stick of licorice for our troubles. But would like to see what we could get if anyone knows of the way to get things for free maybe this chaps HT would be able to enlighten us all and then we could all be get freebies for our school. @36Degrees: I suggested quite some time back to our SLT about a project which I would have liked to have managed and this was called "Golden Time". It was time given to students for exceptional work or behavior say like 5 mins for completing homework or being hard working in the class. When this time had amounted to an hour or more they could take time out from lessons at an appropriate time to them and the staff and allowed "Golden Time" in the Games room which would have the latest Games and consoles in for them to play on. We now have what they call Vivo-Miles a similar based operation which we have to pay for and just credits the students with points which they can redeem from various shops which are aligned to the project. I still think my idea would be cheaper and more effective.

Easy install, no database required. A whole heap of Java ones here: Open Source Email Servers,Open Source Email Servers written in Java,Email Servers And here: Pegasus Mail There are so many Phew!
