Patricia Cornwell has a great collection, Stieg Larsson has a great trilogy out, Kathy Reichs is another along the Cornwell route. I always enjoyed science fantasy along the lines of Anne McCaffrey who wrote about the dragon worlds, good imaginative reading. Just ordered 8 books from Amazon on Vietnam (true stories) to read on my hols in the Caribbean There are lots more, but alongside the reading I also enjoy someone telling the story to me so have 100s of audio books too.

@Duke: Downtime to any business is crucial and unless you have everything covered in total fail-over and redundancy then you are in fact going to incur downtime. How you manage that downtime is something that you and the SLT are going to have to sit down and work out. Then write up an SLA to which you and the SLT agree to and there you have it. You as the NM are required to be as flexible as feasibly possible and the school also has to be flexible in its thinking, give and take should result in a very manageable process which gives both you and the SLT total faith in the IT infrastructure and the management of it. Work life balance is something we should all be aware of and can lead to some serious health issues for people but if managed properly by SLT and yourself then it should be a progressive partnership. The whole school then benefits from this and you will be recognised for the efforts of you and your team.

@All: A child when it is born recognises its parents by their faces so it is apparent that to all human beings seeing other peoples faces gives us all the confidence to approach that person, if that person is masked by whatever then our childhood upbringing tells us that something is not right with this scenario and therefore we feel uncomfortable with it and so avoid confrontation as in the flight syndrome or we confront as in the fight syndrome which is a basic animal instinct which we all have. It would therefore be in everyone's interest if only to allow each other to understand and fully integrate with one another as a full multicultural society the fact that we could greet each other face to face in a modern cultural experience. Its not a racist thing its old culture and with the world becoming smaller by the second it is a culture which hinders all the world from fully integrating and being as one nation "The Human Race"

@flyinghaggis: Its a bit like cars, the initial 5 secs at startup does the most damage rather than constant running as the oil flow is not up to optimum temperature and therefore creates problems. Like electrical units take more charge in starting than in constant running so people who think turning things off and then on again at certain times of the day are in fact generating more power surge's and thus using more electricity which costs the school or factory more. I just wanted to get in on telling a story cos I liked the searchlight one and have similar experiences with electrical equipment and also cos I'm old hehe!! Have a good weekend everyone

@Roughley0: You may need to change the bios settings to boot from the CD/DVD drive directly as auto run function may be turned off.

@pastokes: We created a package for that very same thing for CC4 Windows 7 which puts the file into C:\ProgramData\Research Machines\Easiteach Studio works a treat.

Try the nic settings instead of NAT use bridged, had this problem with virtualbox and this solved it. Also the above settings also given in the choice of HDD controller should also be changed.

We went for stand alone options years ago and to tell you the truth it has worked so well for the cost but it would depend on your access points and how you wanted to manage them. Here is what we have used for the past 6 years: Products | Micro Touch Key (MTK) | Borer Data Systems Probably out of date now but works exceptionally well and very inexpensive. We only have 2 entrances, one is the staff entrance and the other is the reception entrance, only the staff have keyfobs and the reception has a manual override button which only the receptionist has access to for letting in guests and visitors. The students use a different access point which is closed after a certain time in the morning and only opened when students leave for home lunch or at the end of the day. This has worked extremely well and as we use registration at every lesson there is no need for students to register as they come into school.

This type of tracking is currently used by the armed forces for missile guidance systems and very effective it is too. It can actively interpret the surrounding area and determine if it is going to fall short of its intended target thus making the necessary changes in flight path and thus it is virtually 100% effective. I could give you the classified details of this but then I would have to kill you all.

@creese: I have tried these, actually bought 3 of them but the users said they were a load of c**p. Not being ungrateful but I was looking for something which was more box like and came out from the sides of the TFT.

@plexer: Confidential data which only certain people have access to. Yes I agree with you on that but what this member of staff has stated is that certain members of staff are just walking in without giving them enough time to lock their screen and therefore are able to see what they are on with. I know this should be a case of staff knocking before they are asked to come in but as you well know certain staff are above that and will interrupt meetings etc just by walking in without knocking. I am just in the process of looking at the moment.

Hi All, Have been asked by senior member of staff if I could look into a type of security screen which will stop people looking at their screen when stood at the side of computer. I have invested in so called privacy screens which fit on the front but in reality they don't work well enough. Was just wondering what other people use and where they obtained it from? Thanks in Advance
