Hi folks, We're thinking of switching to iPad for tablets. 1. What's a recommended way of managing them e.g. locking them down and removing apps, and also deploying apps? 2. What's the best way to buy them in terms of discount, or is it essentially an education discount and no more? Thanks

How much are they charging?! Re. the app, what files are you trying to open? Have you had a look in the content store for an alternative?

We do have VLANs, but this server would be on the default VLAN. @robsonma My colleague had already checked, and both the problem machines could see the SIMS server and map the SIMS share. So it's just the SIMS server that has a problem seeing these two PCs. Just built a third machine, so will see what happens...

The SIMS server itself though can't browse to these machines, and apparently that's a key requirement of being able to deploy with SOLUS (sorry, meant to confirm we're using SOLUS3). I will test whether the SIMS share is visible.

The client is currently DHCP, and the SIMS server has a static address. I can ping both ways, but I can't browse to the machine in Explorer, either by name or IP address. When I try to do that I get the error above. I can try a static address on the client, at least for testing. These machines are a little odd from a network perspective, in that they were built with a wired connection, but will then have USB wireless. We're going to try building a third machine, and test if the SIMS server can access it before we switch to wireless.

The specific error when I try to browse to these PCs is "Windows cannot access. Error code 0x80070035." I get this even before I try and access a share to the PC, this is just browsing to it under Network. If I enter the IP address of the PC I get the same error. Found a lot of things on this e.g. disabling IPv6, ensuring various protocols are in place, TCP/IP NETBIOS helper is running, but nothing has worked so far.

Just to add, I have another 2012 R2 server (file server) which can browse to these PCs without issue.

Hi folks, I've got two new PCs running Win 10 1709. SOLUS cannot deploy to them, gives an "Install failed" error. The domain firewall is off. Oddly I cannot browse to these PCs from the SIMS server e.g. \\hostname\c$, although I can ping them. I can browse to other PCs without issue. Any ideas why I can't browse to these PCs? Thanks

Yep, that's the correct location. There are two items under there: "Select when Feature Updates are received" and "Select when Quality Updates are received".

We tried configuring a lock screen, but it didn't work, and there's hundreds of reports of the same issue. On our staff PCs it used to quite happily update the login screen (apparently it's a different thing than the lock screen), but the last few weeks it has stopped. Not sure if that's coincided with updating to 1709.

OK. Upgrades is definitely turned off in WSUS, and that update doesn't list anywhere either. A mystery... Hopefully staff aren't updated!

Hi folks, Anyone know which GPO controls the ability to update the Windows login screen via Spotlight? As far as I can tell we've not disabled anything for staff PCs, yet the login screens no longer change. I've spotted one that relates to asking users about Spotlight images, but that isn't disabled anyway. Thanks

Yes to both, assuming that the former would be in the WSUS "Feature Packs" category, which isn't enabled.

Hi folks, We opened up a couple of our 1703 laptops today, ran Windows Update, and within the update screen appeared "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709"! Without prompt it then started downloading and installing 1709. It does it in the background to begin with, but on the reboot then takes 10-20 minutes to process the update (obviously laptop speed dependent). These first two were done as domain admins, then we tried one with a domain user and it also did it. I did make a change in WSUS at the start of the week, just to add Service Packs and Update Rollups. I definitely didn't add "Feature Updates". Having searched WSUS there is no "feature update" listed, nor anything other than cumulative updates to "1709". Anyone else experiencing this? My main concern is that a user is going to unwittingly get the update, then be inconvenienced when it applies. Thanks

There are no additional margins or similar set in the print properties. Opened the PDF in both Chrome and Acrobat Pro, and both show the file with this issue, although it prints the same as well.

Hi folks, Are there any known issues with the current build of Word 2016? We have two documents that were created a few weeks ago. Now when they are printed or saved as a PDF, bits of the document move to the following page, almost as if Word isn't gauging the vertical space correctly. The problem can be resolved by reducing the space taken up by the text, but obviously it would be ideal if it worked. Thanks

Microsoft say that KB4041994 is an Insider patch only, which explains why it isn't showing in WSUS. Odd though, because the PC that showed it via direct updating wasn't an Insider build.

We have Critical Updates, Definition Updates, and Security Updates ticked. I'm guessing this would be considered an Update Rollup, but I'm not sure where an update's classification is detailed. Along with Update Rollups, there are also Drivers, Feature Packs, Service Packs, Tools, Updates, and Upgrades, none of which we download. Feature Packs I definitely want to avoid, because I want those to go on when we dictate. I've had a previous discussion re. drivers, and from what I understand it isn't much use to have them enabled. Not sure about the rest though.
