Absolutely. We've thought about Linx tablets, but are wary of them supporting Win 10 in 3 years. Plus plenty of complaints about hardware quality. iPads are the other route, but much more expensive, problematic to lockdown, and further software required to manage.

Presumably these are the original Octavos? Several of ours failed at the point of the power connector, because they break away from the circuit board. LearnPad were repairing them, but they have no spares. Ours are end of life, as 5 years old at this point. If you can find an electronics repair company of any quality they can be replaced.

I rang the ICO helpline, and suffice to say the ball's in our court, although I can somewhat understand why. It only becomes an issue if we are viewed as not having protected the hardcopy sufficiently, so if the staff member kept the hardcopy with them it wouldn't be an issue. If they left it in a car, or a similar environment, then that would be an issue (as previous Undertakings have shown).

Yes... *fume* Also eye rolling from staff on the need to keep information locked away. One of the frustrating aspects of being a DPO. But are the ICO super clear about this requirement? I've seen "educational organisations" with undertakings for leaving sensitive documentation unattended, is there a specific requirement to always lock sensitive data away when not being used? I can feel a call to the ICO helpline coming on...

Having bought the bag, staff have now pointed out that on big trips (60+ students) they have to take passports, copies of passports, and other contact information, so the volume of information can be sizeable. What do other schools do in this situation? Is it enough that if you keep the documents with you they're considered secure, or do they need to be with you and locked away?

Yep, exactly. They say they've tested with 30 users. Was it even 30 concurrent users? Essentially students create recipes that get stored in the database. No, nothing like that unfortunately. Will try that. Will try that also. Thanks!

We're having no end of trouble with both LearnPads and their support, and I contacted one of the directors. Had to do that twice so far, but it has at least had an effect. LearnPad really need to improve both the quality of their hardware, and their support.

Hi folks, We have an issue with Food in Focus 2. This is network deployed software that runs a client from a share, and the client talks to an Access database also on the share. Clients are running Win 10 1703, and server's running 2012 R2. Once we get above 20 or so students running concurrently the client will start to give a "Unable to connect to database" error for any other users that want to use it. Anecdotally, rebooting the PC can solve this, but I'm wondering if it's because other students have stopped using it. My experience with Access databases is they get flaky above a handful of users, which is why most products switch to SQL server at this point. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix or troubleshoot this? Food in Focus' support say they have tested with 30 users and it has worked fine, and they can't help further. Thanks

We combined it with an update to Win 10, so I did a lot of research on what we could do with GPOs, versus what could be done with DNA. A lot of testing also. DNA doesn't really do anything in the way of Windows security, although NetSupport have added a feature to prevent users from logging on more than once. No gotchas per se, just the blood and sweat of researching and testing it all!

A bit of BYoD should be OK for that, as long as the devices are locked, and it gets cleared off afterwards.

That looks ideal, thanks! @3s-gtech It's all about deterring the "casual browser", and to know the data has been compromised, as I understand it. A filing cabinet will just take a screwdriver.

Essentially gone. It's still installed on the DC, but not being used at all. We've switched to NetSupport DNA which does most of what we wanted, along with School and PaperCut.

Hi folks, We need something lockable to take sensitive documents e.g. student medical data, on school trips. I'm thinking something as minimal as possible, of course it just needs a lock on it. Has anyone come across something that fits the bill? I don't want a briefcase because of the extra bulk, almost a lockable document wallet. Not finding anything that really fits the bill at Amazon. Odd, because all the evidence suggests not. As far as I can see there isn't a way to remove SMB1, it just gets enabled or disabled. I've asked our county support to confirm this was Capita, but nothing so far.

Hi folks, What is it that controls, when an application window is closed and reopened, where the window reopens? With Chrome for example the window reopens where it was last closed, as does Word. SIMS opens maximised on my primary display. The reason for asking is that we're using Promethean's Activinspire touchscreen program, and that always opens on the primary display. Whereas we'd like it to open where it was last positioned, on a secondary display (the touchscreen). Any ideas? Thanks

Time and date are spot on, although the fix seems to be the post above. I just need to double check and deploy SIMS to ensure all is working.

To test, I've tried creating a share with "Everyone" permissions, and "Everyone" security permissions. I get the same error.

Sussed it. Turned out to be some errant credential related to the gateway, removed it from Credentials Manager.

UAC was enabled, but have set it to not notify and still have the issue. I have tried logging on a local admin and get the same behaviour.

Not sure what's up with this server. It cannot browse its own shares e.g. its own SIMS share! This is preventing SIMS from deploying. Anyway, not sure if it's a server issue, so have posted it here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2012/190265-cant-browse-its-own-shares.html#post1626644

Hi folks, We have a 2012 R2 server (our SIMS server) which cannot browse its own shares. When it tries to access a share it gives the error "Share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network name is no longer available." Other PCs can browse these shares without issue, using the same domain account. Windows firewall is off, network discovery is on, SMB v1 is on. I've tried adding a new share with Everyone permissions and I can't access that either. I'm at a loss as to what the issue could be! Any ideas? Thanks

Ah-ha! That explains it! We did some testing this morning, and it will install on 1703. Now we have another problem, when we try and update we get "Cannot deploy SIMS Summer 2017 Full Release (7.176.43) as the update is missing from repository. Please ask your SOLUS3 deployment manager to download the update again." Aaaaaagh!
