We are in the process of moving from msde to a full blown sql 2000 server to support sims.net. Our network infastructure is very well designed. (1gig fibres from hp 4108 switch) I thought if we have sql running on a seperate server it takes some load from the A/D server that is running sims.net. However i was told that it would not make a difference. All we need to do is to install it on a seperate hard drive on the A/D server. Server is a 2.4 zeon machine with 2xscsi 30g hdd. If you have a mis system, whats your setup? Also how would you folks go about it? We have a box with sql server 2000 already that is doing nothing at the moment. However i have thought about using this with our circ server to support WSUS and sophos, veritas many thanks

if they are in working order then why not get in touch with a recyling centre that shipps them off to the developing countries!

We use pcounter and have drastically reduced waste. The software also has features such as automatically deleting repeated jobs (so when the same job is sent to the printer it is automatically deleted) Simpy to use and gets user accounts from active directory.

the new version is called pro curve manager and is available as freeby, but only the basic verison, top tools is legacy but still worthwhile

sims times out when trying to run various reports
projector1 replied to projector1's topic in MIS Systems
we are running with MSDE as our database engineon our sims server, would there be a gain in performance if we moved to full blown sql 2000 server? Also would it be more efficient if we had a seperate sql server? at the moment our sims server is aour AD server, file server, Wsus server< AV server and ablout 100 clients -

i am just checking to see if any body else is experiencing time out errors when trying to run a report such as data collection sheets etc. When you try and run the various reports, you get a window apppear stating that the report may take a while to run (so capita are aware that reports can take a while, what will happen when sims.net is being used more and more when you start adding elements such as learning gateway etc) i have tried the report with such a one pupil selected and still get the same result We have xp machines with 512mb ram, 2.4ghz celeron cpu's. hp pro curve switches that are connected the servers via gig link. The server is only two years old zeon with 1gig ram and 40gig free storage! Is anybody else out there using sims.net having this type of issue? thanks

advice needed re anytime anywhere access system
projector1 replied to projector1's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Or Karoshi or SSL Explorer any further info please -
hi one of the stratagies on the govenor's wish list is a "anytime anywhere access". Basically they want staff and pupils to be able to access their home directory from home and be able to.... let say do additional work on their gcse coursework. create new word documents and save it to their user area. Is ther such a system in place? I would be greatful for feedback as i am sure this in place in other educational estblishments in the uk. I know for commerce they use vpns.

create a reporting web app? take a loook at seagate crystal report writer, this will sit on top of any database and extract the data and create simple to very complex reports. i think capita use crystal report writer for their reporting function

we are having the same problems, i have noticed that it is possibly due to us using the scaled down version of sql server (free version) since have had sophos and WSUS installed on the same server. As these two use the sql engine for reporting sims.net users are at times getting timed out errors when trying to login to sims.net or when trying to run reports. check the event viewer on the server for any logs relating the the sql. i think capita are going to send out letters advising sims.net schools to upgrade to microsoft sql server 2000

we have a windows server 2003 that runs msde. This is our only server. MSDE is used for the av sophos enterprise manager, WSUS and our sims database. We have about 30 client pc's and 60 networked laptops. The msde has come to the stage where we are going to have to upgrade it to microsoft sql server 2000. However i thought this would be a good time for us to add a member server that could run the av and wsus. The server was ok when we were just running the database software. however since then i have installed wsus and sophos EC. The sims database software that is installed on the client pc's has at times been giving users time out errors since the av went on. In the event viewer on the server sqlserver has logged that the number of concurrent connections has exceeded 8 thus expect reduced powerformance...... to time to go to the full blown sql! what sort of machine would i need to cope with the av and wsus. we have a spare new 3ghz p4 machine with 1x160 sata drive 1x1000 nic would this do the trick or would you reccommend a "server based" pc or would you recommend we buy a budget server the current server spec is intel xeon-A 2.4ghz 1gig ECC ram 2x 36 scsi hard drives i am looking forward to setting up mu first production server!

a key thing you may want to look out for is the battery life, the longer you can use them off the battery the better, staff hate having to pull out the chargers.

we have an issue where policies are in place but they use word's webtools to allow them access to command.com to have access to the system drive and install software

thanks for the range of selections folks. i did find this site this morning http://www.addbalance.com/word/webtoolbar.htm i am hoping to test it on a few client pc's next week. jonny_valentine you mentioned that there are many flaws in GP's and way to bypass them. Do you know of any utilities or sites that expand on this?
