That did it! I remember now we were testing another device via a small unmanaged switch, but this was plugged into the HP not the Cisco. Anyhow, unplugging that switch resolved communication from the Cisco switch. It must have been going through this little unmanaged switch, getting lost. Thanks!

We have a Cisco 6513 connected to a HP 5412 switch. Port GigabitEthernet1/25 on the Cisco has the following settings: no ip address switchport switchport access vlan 100 switchport mode access spanning-tree portfast spanning-tree bpduguard enable A device plugged into that port was able to communicate to devices on vlan 100 just fine for the last few months. But just after rebooting the Cisco switch recently, any device connected to that port no-longer can communicate. We have made no changes to its config, and the running config before the reboot was saved. What could have made it lose connectivity with vlan 100 just by rebooting? Thanks.

Sometimes SIMS .net usage becomes very high, with CPU spikes on the server. This normally happens when a user is running a large report. It then sometimes (rarely) causes SIMS .net to slow down or crash for other users. Is there any way to check, in these occasions, which user is running a large report in realtime? Thanks.

One of our vlan's (ID: 104) stopped working suddenly and computers on that vlan failed when trying to obtain a dhcp ip address. On the Cisco switch if we do show vlan, this command is supposed to shows the vlans in the vlan.dat file. We notice it has every other vlan except the one that is now missing. If we show the running-config or even the startup config, they DO show the missing vlan (as if everything is fine), but that vlan doesn't take effect. We tried deleting the "missing" vlan using clear vlan 104, but it says No subinterface configured for vLAN Identifier 104, so it's already missing. Recreating the vlan, saving and rebooting still doesn't add it into the vlan.dat or make the vlan work. The switch is in vtp server mode. Any ideas appreciated.

Quick update, Capita saw the file and said it's corrupt but they can't give a reason. They managed to recover it though.

I've managed to restore a previous version of the SPL file to last week from our backups, and it opens fine, so at least I don't have to redo that work. But the strangest thing is, I was working on later versions of that file since yesterday and it was opening fine! Now that later version doesn't, nor any of the versions I restore from our backups from a few days before! And yet the latest versions are also larger in size so they really should have data in them.

My Nova version seems OK, it's the same computer and it opens the file. I have the SPL file saved to my documents and it has always opened fine before. Just when I came to open it last the timetable is all gone! I'm sure I'm pointing it to the correct directory too, it's just an SPL file in my documents which I've always opened well before.

Have been working on a timetable in Nova T6 for a few days. It was saving everything fine since. But when I now open it, the timetable is gone, it's all blank. I can see some data like staff lists, but no table. I've even tried opening the backup files it automatically creates every half hour and they're also all blank. I've tried another computer too. What could it be?! I think it's lost everything I've worked on!

Can confirm everything is 802.1q. I think trunking the ports is where I'm unclear. I've tried the following on the HP: The fibre from the Cisco switch, is going into fibre port B21 on the HP switch. So I did this on the HP: vlan 1 | untagged a1-d24 (so default vlan is all untagged, I think it's like this by default anyway) vlan 113 | tagged b21 I'm not sure how else to add B21 to a trunk. I also tried: Menu > Switch Configuration > Port/Trunk Settings > Mode=Auto; FlowCTRL=Disable; Group=Trk1; Type=LACP for port b21 No joy. I've only set the switch's IP and and subnet mask on the default setup screen. So when I view the IP config in the menu interface, I see: Default VLAN: IP: 172.16.254.20/24 VLAN 113: IP: DISABLED Although I did try removing the IP from the default VLAN and placing it on VLAN 113, no joy. Unfortunately putting the IP on the VLAN didn't work either. Either way I can't ping the gateway 172.16.254.254 from the HP switch itself, times out. I can ping it from any workstation though which are connected to other Cisco switches (no machines connected to the HP yet as they won't pick up IPs from it). EDIT: "can"

That's correct, not trunked on the Cisco side. I may have found the problem. Reading a HP user guide for the switch, it says: "In the factory-default configuration, the switch has one, permanent default VLAN (named DEFAULT_VLAN) that includes all ports on the switch. Thus, when only the default VLAN exists in the switch, if you assign an IP address and subnet mask to the switch, you are actually assigning the IP addressing to the DEFAULT_VLAN. If multiple VLANs are configured, then each VLAN can have its own IP address. " The only place I set the IP was the setup screen, which means it's applied it to the default VLAN only. I'm going to try show vlan command, and it should say: DEFAULT_VLAN | Manual VLAN113 | Disabled I'll then set the global IP to DHCP again like factory defaults, and manually set the IP for the VLAN using: vlan ip address Hopefully that will work, will try and update here soon. The Cisco side of the fibre is not trunked, so I've set B21 on the HP (where the fibre goes into) as untagged. Saved and rebooted, double-checked the config, it is untagged on VLAN 113. Port light is still on, link status up. Still can't ping it If I plug a laptop into any port, it won't get a DHCP IP either, although the link light comes on.

Having some trouble pinging our new HP J9540A switch. From factory defaults, it has been setup as follows: Main setup IP of switch: 172.16.254.20/24, gateway 172.16.254.254 Spanning tree enabled VLANs VLAN ID: 113 Name: vlan 113 Ports: untagged A1-D24 Set as primary VLAN We have a fibre connected to port B21 which is a fibre port. Link light is on, port status is UP. I can't ping the switch (172.16.254.20) from my workstation from over the network. I'd like to manage it remotely so I know it's communicating. I've tried disabling spanning tree, same issue. I've tried having port B21 as tagged and untagged, no difference. The rest of the network are Cisco switches and routers. Any ideas most appreciated.

Bump. Managing ever-changing permissions on folders for large media files is a pain and inefficient. A NAS would need very high bandwidth for editing. Home drives are mapped so will be too slow, and have small quotas. Yet we need to prevent other students accessing each other's media files. Any suggestions?
