Hi All, I'm after some advice or thoughts on this. We are imminently moving away from our current email system (Link2ICT (Bham) Zimbra). The way I see it I have 2 choices, On premises Exchange or Office 365. I have been doing some research on the pro's and con's of both but I would like some input from this forum on any previous experiences you may have had with this. (I will have to explain to Leadership the various differences between the services and need to explain it in as simple terms as possible, because it seems they all think that Outlook = Cloud and that email = website and the the broadband is email (garrrghh!). An actual quote from an SMT member "if the internet goes down we'll still be able to access Office 365 because it's in the cloud (facepalm) - I can deal with this and hopefully get them to understand what exchange actually is and how this all differs including that if the internet fails then there will be no access to an email platform anyway.) Some background: I have neither installed or managed an exchange environment before. The schools I have worked in have always used hosted email of one type or another. I can (hopefully) resource the exchange server in our existing virtualised environment without too much difficulty so infrastructure cost would be negligible. Although I am worried about future mailbox growth in terms of storage. (I have about 3TB free and unallocated on the SAN) We have EES in place so I can get the exchange licenses / CAL's through that. On the other hand O365 = free (at the moment) 150 Staff, 1000 Students - Secondary School. Any help or thoughts gratefully received. Thanks, Nick.

Some of the top advantages of server virtualisation are: 1. Lower number of physical servers - we can reduce hardware maintenance costs because of a lower number of physical servers. 2. By implementing a server consolidation strategy, we can decrease the space taken up by the current server provision. 3. Increase availability of hardware and applications for improved business continuity: Securely backup and migrate entire virtual environments with no interruption in service. Eliminate planned downtime and recover immediately from unplanned issues. 4. By having each application within its own "virtual server" we can prevent one application from impacting another application when upgrades or changes are made. 5. We can develop a standard virtual server build that can be easily duplicated which will speed up server deployment when required for new systems and tasks. 6. We can deploy multiple operating system technologies on a single hardware platform (i.e. Windows Server 2003, Linux, Windows Server 2008, 2012 etc). 7. Lower power consumption, by having fewer physical servers, we can reduce the power required to run them. There are loads more advantages but the above are some of the talking points I used when justifying our virtual environment.

There is no real rush so to speak, Leadership have asked the question and L2ICT have been on the blower asking if we are still interested in migration. Originally we were attracted to the features on offer by Progresso and the chance to banish ePortal and it's idiosyncrasies.. then the Progresso scare stories started. With Facility being supported it's less of a drama but the question has been asked and I was interested in getting other peoples "live" experiences rather than relying on the claims made by L2ICT and Advanced.

Your right about that, I have very little info coming out of L2ICT. Which is annoying to say the least.

Hi All, I am after any information people may like to share with me about the current status of Progresso in terms of it's current usability from anyone that uses it in a live environment. Have the sprint releases done what was advertised? How fast is it? Is it reliable ? Would you recommend it? etc... We were due to go live here last year but we postponed it and now the question has arisen again as to whether we should migrate or stick with Facility or move elsewhere. Any Info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have had serious problems getting proxy settings to apply through group policy, It seems very flaky and random. In the end I had to apply the proxy setting through a .reg file that is scripted to run at login. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] "MigrateProxy"=dword:00000001 "ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001 "ProxyHttp1.1"=dword:00000000 "ProxyServer"="yourproxy:yourport" "ProxyOverride"="" You could save that as a .reg file and import that through a batch file. (make sure to add your own proxy info)

Another +1 for virtualisation here. VMware essentials plus, 3 Hosts, SAN, Veeam B&R - Sorted. Cannot recommend it enough, less physical space used, less power consumption, more efficient use of hardware, backup and DR covered, redundancy and HA built in. It's a marvel.
