I've been asked by one of the teachers what the chances are of getting some voice recognition (you talk it types) software in are. My knowledge on this area began and ended with a trial version on CD on the front of a magazine c.1998 Anyone out there use any in school? any recommedations?

Unfortunately I don't have any of those we've got most other makes of Server represented in the server room:rolleyes: On the IBMs that drives have failed on, there's an amber LED next to each HDD that came on when they failed... and the "hot swap" didn't - chkdsktastic! Sorry that's not much help but at least it gives you a bump and hopefully some who knows NECs will spot it:)

£2-3k or so? you'll (depending on your building's construction) probably need 1 AP in the second and fifth rooms on each floor, so there's always an AP either in the room, or next door. We got ours from CPLTD (Sponsors on here), who were great throughout.

I know I'm probably being thick, blind or otherwise inept, but I can't see EdugeekBUY on the new layout either - is there a link somewhere?

if it's just one room, IIRC you can run a single ruckus AP standalone without the management stuff for a few hundred quid (£250-£400 range)

Possibly... When we had a failed drive in a Raid5 that's pretty much what happened. Eventually the server may realise the drive's dead and stop trying to use it at which point things'll speed up again - but you'll have no fault tolerence so double the backups! What make of server is it?

I'm one of them - before we got Ruckus I was pretty impressed with what the unmanaged wireless could do, but it could never cope with more than 10 or so connections at once, though we did occasionally stretch to 15 in a room with an access point or two actually in the room. But managed is definately the way to go "sit I can't log on it says the domain's unavailable" has been consigned to history! - and you (almost) get a Harry Potter style "marauder's map" with all the laptops on it to boot!

Well, our Ruckus APs can take, well, I don't know how many connections each, we've been up to 60 on one AP and it was still happy They also talk intelligently to each other so the laptops can roam efficiently between them. Rather than having just one arial they have loads of bits of areial that they combine to form "beams" by carefully manipulating interference patterns - and fire the signal straight at where it's needed!

tbh I'd expect them to interfere like mad - like dropping two stones into a pond and expecting twice as many perfect rings.... one on each side of the room on different channels but the same ssid may work better as the laptops will go blindly for the strongest signal EDIT: D'oh someone beat me to it

Log in to SOLUS - there's a "SIMS information" button at the bottom which shows if any patches have been applied

What are these connectors called? They're on the mains side of our Toshiba netbook PSUs and we need the male version to make a pat testing adapter cable but can't find them on the RS website:confused: I'm sure one of you good people will know!

Quick question: OFSTED are coming in and I want to suspend Papercut print quota-ing while they're here to make lessons go as smoothly as possible. What's the quickest way to do that (easily reversibly)? stop the service? would that work?

We used to be an LP+ school and we had these kinds of issues to begin with; we eventually tracked it down to the LEA using load balancing on their proxy which resolved it's name randomly to one of four IPs, which was screwing up the SSL connections. Once I configured our ISA server to use only one of the LEA IPs explicitly, the problem disappeared. Not sure if that helps, but it's something to check.

I was having a look at this last night on Dell's website - it looks like Intel NICs are a no-cost option on the Vostro but they're about fifty quid (?iirc) out of the price range we're looking at with the dual core (unless Simon can work some magic) and only the roughly same spec as the Samsungs that I was looking at anyway Edit: Ignore me, that's the wireless NIC that can be Intel on a no cost option

Yeah, the Samsung's a slightly higher spec, too- Core2Duo rather than straight Celeron. Interested to see you've found them reliable - I'm glad I posted this now, my only experience with a Samsung was in my previous job - they gave me one and the motherboard died, whereas we've had quite a bit of Lenovo and Toshiba kit here and it's been pretty well fine, but if Samsungs are generally OK the chip could swing it:)
