I have 1 suggestion and two queries..sorry.. Suggestion: Link in the pages to take the user back to the main admin or main view pages in one step. Query 1: Can it be twiddled to allow any "non standard" services like VMWare to be monitored? Query 2: If the server is UP, but a monitored service is not, is there any way of informing the user of an issue without them clicking on the affected machine? Looks very good though! First play with IIS as well..relatively painless..

I'm at this point as well..the error I get is: SWbemLocator Error '80041008' Invalid Parameter /MLSM/extended.asp, line 141 If that helps.. It's on an XPSP2 VM under Virtualbox, logged on as me. If that's any use.. EDIT: Ignore that! Got it working now..had the username entered with the domain\ in front of it...got shot of it and I can see services running/stopped. Nice.. I can also now see PE have disconnected their AP again..grr..

I've done it at home with the "disconnect drive 1, install, reconnect" method, and I just pick from the BIOS boot menu..

Booman - google and download "Uniform server"..it's a WAMP package that does PHP out of the box, and is totally portable. I'm running it from my pen drive with the server script (just testing)

Yep..we use DTs old compressor..a 5 litre jobbie. Well, we did until the damn thing seized up.. I was looking for a phone number on it, and stopped when I found a telex instead...it's got to be a good 15-20 years old.. We're buying another though..it makes cleaning the dells such a doddle.

Makes me laugh...we had a housewarming (of sorts) last night, and all took a walk (or in my case a limp) into town to the chinese...on the way back there were 2 young..well, for want of a better term, ladies lurking about together on the pavement wearing altogether too little.. Heh..no, I never carry money of any sort. I think it was one of those "I'm new, but my sisters/brothers/siblings long-left now have told me all about you" things..I know I'm on ratemyteacher or whatever it is as "Cool..". I'm always polite to the kids...as with others. Greet them in the morning, smile, hold doors for them, bit of banter on the way in..same as and when they arrive at my desk for help..to be fair, there are only a handful of our kids I could describe as "bad"...most are good kids, who aren't so good in academic areas. I was sat discussing alloys with a year 11 lad who everyone says is "awful" apart from the IT dept...I asked (firmly tongue in cheek) if they were for his skateboard.. "No you fool..they're for my Mini..." "Oh? Mini eh? 998? 1275?" "Nah. Vauxhall XE redtop.." "Sod me..you're building one?" "Yep..want to see pics? hang on..oh yeah, you drive an Astra don't you..want a new engine?" Most of our kids are like that...in classrooms, a nightmare. Outside, they're all quite nice! Not educationally gifted maybe, but most seem to have part time jobs plastering/labouring etc just for the fun of it. Bring on the vocational training centre with the new academy...give them something to really get their teeth into..

It is a nice feeling...we had one at christmas.. Sat in the LRC patching up a SFF Dell, 30 seconds to the holiday bell...in comes a year 7 student. I thought nothing of it...until she proceeded to hug the librarian, then came over and did the same to me, followed by a "have a good holiday" to each of us.. We do have a few..

oh, I know...but again, unless a machine is showing active signs of malcontent, we tend to leave them be..they're fast enough for the staff and kiddies, and they've not complained about the speeds of build 0707 yet..heh..it IS far in advance of 0706. In fact, I'm not even sure I'll replace it in the summer...0708..I don't think I have anything much to add to the image..I might just reimage with 0707 again. We've got 60gb disks that aren't hitting 80% capacity even after 12 months of use...Fragmentation isn't really something we worry about..the base image source drive got defragged thoroughly before ghosting.

I've got a vista drive and an Xp drive in my righ, and I pick and choose at boot what I wish to run. Vista annoys me because of: UAC - I got shot of it. Clunkiness - WTF is the logic of putting "run" that deep in the menu? Arse. Telnet? Arse. "Java doesn't support Aero, you have been temporarily downgraded"? Arse. "Media Corrupt, run Scandisk" on every USB drive? Arse. Bloat - I'm sorry..11gb for a clean OS install? Laughter. Execution speed - I don't want eye candy, I want quick. Kill some Aero effects and it's quick enough. Ram needs - 1gb? Get stuffed. I have 2, I like having plenty left. General needs - Aero? Bin. Do you use your OS, or look at it and admire the pretty? High end graphics? Bog off. Plus the OS was late, the feature set isn't what it should have been, and for the time and effort, it should have been so much more... That said, it's a nice change, and I can live with it..and XP does look dated in comparison, but I'm waiting for Windows 7 now...XPSP3 and Windows 7..Vista's just a bit of an "ME" blip in my view..

We have 2 of us and 200ish machines...most of the backend is handled by LEA for now..so we do have a fair amount of "free" time. In the new building, going our own way I do expect to be run off my feet. Looking forward to it. Currently I'm reading E-books on Office 2007 and refreshing my knowledge, and tweaking the workstation builds and playing with server08 on Virtualbox, as well as doing some scanning. Steve's doing our accounts. He does enjoy that. All our updating etc is done through WSUS as well. Occasional profile purges, stuff the defrags, clean and service/ dust the PCs once a year (did in August), clean IWBs and associated kit, the rest is done as we find the need. When we have a major blitz on the builds, it only takes a day to do as many as we want..best done in the hols though. It's far less of an arse to just reimage the machinery every 12 months than to defrag, purge profiles and tidy up loose files.. This easter, Steve will be playing with CS3, and I..well..I'll be VMing and VPNing from home, maybe pop in for a day to do some odds and sods, but I'll do most WS maintenance from home. I'd like to have a look at sharepoint etc too..so much I want to read and play with..heh..

Bear in mind that as well as the tech team, they have a webdev team and a "flash engineer" as well...but then they do sell their online curriculum to schools..heh. Its nice, but certainly the OLC isn't cross browser friendly..it breaks quite badly in Firefox. I think our version is a bit old now though. The broadcast kit is immense...it's literally TV class equipment..the camera is a huge "BBCesque" jobbie..impressive, I grant you, but..overkill in a way. Although I do salute the "moving to electronic media" bit..I only wish WE could drag the staff into it..we waste SO much paper with staff briefings and so on..

Indeed you can.. Our parent academy is Thomas Telford School - and they have an "online broadcast" that they use for inter-school announcements, as well as making it available from their site over the net..things like "heads message of the day", lost and found announcements, star pupil bits etc etc. They have some SERIOUS TV quality kit to do it as well..we're going to try and make a similar thing with "normal" mortal kit.. http://www.ttsonline.net <- their website.

We've got a kid in the teaching office doing some work right now..well, should be..I keep taskkilling the little sod as he's sat on the TTS online broadcast system again. He's desperate for a bit of cake..our HOD had a crack at baking, and he's baked a dept. sized coffee cake. He's begged in so many ways..we've had him go and tell the IT Teachers they're "the best ever", we've had him take printing to staff, and now he's begging to be "our heron".. When I enquired WTF he was on about, he said "You know...Heron boy? Does all the running about?"... Sigh..do you think he meant "errand boy"? I beyondexec'd him to dictionary.com..

Not done one by them, but I decided to refresh myself and my aged BTEC last year and do Cisco ITE via a local college, by distance learning and net based exams..that wasn't very expensive at all, and I was able to incorporate it into my day. Really should look at doing another..

We had the office next to the shared tech/teaching office going free 18 months ago..as soon as the head said "Any interest?", we had a hole cut through the wall and a carpenter in to fit a doorframe..heh. Now got nice corner desks in diagonal opposites for me and NM, loads of storage and lockers for tools and spares, a 12 socket ex-rackmount power strip for my desk, and several new double sockets for him, the main school printer and waxjet next to them, loads of network sockets plus a wifi point and a stable door for enquiries.. Plus one entire wall is a window, with a view out onto the ski slope..it's nice and airy.

I was going to say - POST card. Or, do what I do..board on desk, PSU plugged in, cables in, fire up on the desk. Does it work? In a case it goes.

We use MRBS, suitably customised. Not too bad at all.
