FRONTPAGE???? I'm sorry..he wants webpages, not bloat and proprietary toss.. It's worse than Dreamweaver, and that annoys the tits off me as well. How much junk can you have in code.. Another vote for notepad++ here, and books..however, I digress... with regards to the car - did you get the thermostat done and engine flushed? When I had the belt and head done I got the stat replaced as well for safety, and I blasted it all out with a hosepipe connected to the block, then did the forward and reverse flush of the heater...my god, did it shift some crud.

I wouldn't buy Netgear if my bum was on fire, TBH. We had a PS121 USB print server..utter junk. Their tech support? Joke. Hours on the phone, no joy with them. It made me that annoyed I had to add it to my site: Karl’s Asylum » Netgear PS121/PS121V2 USB print server. Strangely enough, I've had a few thankyou mails through from people who've had dealings with netgear, and have been close to killing..heh.

We had, up until 12 months back, a "Student Support Director", who was very enthusiastic about "a website BY the kids, FOR the kids", with links to help sites, info, and so on..he picked a few kids from each year, and we used to hold monthly meetings with them and say "What do YOU want on there"..and then they'd brainstorm, and it worked..quite well. The kids did the pages (badly, I grant you), I then tore them apart on the quiet and redid them on the Apache box. Designated kiddies had it mapped as a drive and could update at will, and so on. It really worked quite nicely..then he retired, and nobody has been active since (even though it's on someones "roles and responsibilities". Since then, it's been dying a death. The bullying form is still in use, but that's it. I think I'll rationalise it as much as I can..some stuff is now just linked to the relevant parts of the Internet site.

Hmm. I see.. We have the home screen populated with a simple layout - white box on purple background, with school logo above some "link" buttons, a google safesearch box, Service status indicators and an "E-mail support" link button. That runs on our (incredibly restrictive) IIS box, LEA controlled. The buttons then link off to pages on a local Apache/SQL box, that takes over. I'll try to get screenshots..it's quite embarrasing for the most part...frontpage produces horrible code. That's why the home page is written in Notepad++.

We currently have a (rarely used) VLE, our main school website, and internally we have an intranet. Our Student intranet has been in the past a web page system put together by the kids using Frontpage (spit). It's had things such as "poem of the day", sports fixtures, student news etc, as well as a link to a bullying report form. However, it's stagnated of late..the year 11's that were maintaining it have lost interest, and with the exception of the bully form, it's pretty much redundant. It'd be a shame to lose though...so...do any of you have a similar "student orientated" internal intranet? If so, how do you implement it and what content do you have? I'm just looking for ideas right now..it's currently based on a Uniform Server WAMP package, and I have tried a Mambo install before, but that was overkill really..

indeed not.. I've got a chap here from TTS (parent academy), just chewing the fat about the new build vs current infrastructure pro/con list..it's good fun.. We've got a quadcore Poweredge 840 on order as well...when that arrives, we're going to ESX it and see what we can push it to. All in practise, of course. We already use VMWare server to virtualise 9 or so machines, and I'm going to use P2V to shift another over today, in theory. I have to admit, I find the whole Virtualisation thing utterly fascinating..hardware is getting a bit dull of late, and now the baton of innovation seems to have gone to software..quite scary really.

I do believe the word is "bothered"..;-) We're still LEA - it's (in theory) a single box, but it's clustered and failovered with all the other secondaries, the civic office server farm and the Hadley Learning Community. It's an LEA wide jobbie..SAN, Virtualisation etc..by all accounts if it dies, we just failover to one of many available WAN fibre servers and carry on with what is (promised) 15 seconds max downtime. All secondaries here have servers in, some are nodal housing heavyweight kit (like us, in our case we run Zone 9, several primaries, public buildings and other local schools). All connected on Telewest fibre. The whole of Telford is literally a huge interconnected lump. Which is why all schools/public buildings have Cisco IP phones etc - calling anywhere in Telford is free, pretty much. It's just that it's all been in place like this for 8 years now..we've had "Network 2" which bumped us from 10/100 to gigabit and fibre (and XP) "Network 2.5" which was the SAN introduction, server03 and other bits, and now it looks like "Network 3" (to the tune of £3.2m) refresh is coming in. Virtualisation on a big scale. Bear in mind we have hundreds of servers on this WAN, and something like 30,000 users at last count..or was that 30,000 workstations.. and it makes sense..some of them are at retirement age or slightly beyond that. It makes sense..and at least from my point of view, I'm going to be fascinated watching that go in. Box Failure is not a primary worry of ours. Then, in 12 months or so we move away to a new building, our own in house ESX servers and infrastructure etc..that'll be fun as well..

We have ours set to 21 for the main unit, and 23-24 for the backup. Small room, no windows, 20odd servers+san, switches etc. We got a garden centre thermometer and mounted it to the wall..heh..They'll happily run hotter though. Not an issue soon - they're all being ripped out and virtualised..we may have 2 boxes after that, or just 1. Bring on the summer hols - I want to see that go in. The place will echo, and we may as well shut one aircon down..

We had a major overnight blip a few months back...we didn't know until we looked at MOM. 54 degrees of thereabouts for a couple of hours, then dropped like a stone. I assume the aircon iced up. There are 2 units though, so it's a bit odd that both died..they're on seperate circuits as well.. We've also had an aircon fail that resulted in the thick fire door warping due to the heat in there...that was no fun. The smell of overheating silicon and the racks full of red flashing lights instead of peaceful blue ones..

If so, and if it has a duplexer unit fitted, can you tell me if the duplexer fan should spin at power on? Our recently acquired 4100 works in itself, but every time I put the duplexer on, it puts the paper into the unit and jams solid...so I do wonder if the duplexer has failed and motors aren't running to pull the paper through. Anyone got any ideas for me? It's an interesting unit, but it's beginning to really annoy the hell out of me.

Today I will be mostly tolerating idiots, rebuilding a laserjet duplexer, possibly installing ESX server on a new server that should arrive and playing with that, and then going home and making a fuss of the animals again.

My weekend was spent going to pick up a new kitten, calming the missus down, noting the address to call the RSPCA, then taking him home and bathing, feeding and playing with the little chap, and introducing him to Hex, our existing cat. Some washing has been done, the rest of the weekend was spent avoiding the heat and doing little jobs like rebuilding the garage up/over door. In between feedings. If he's 6 weeks, I'm an OSX expert. 6 inches long, 2 high, blue eyes, no weight at all, needs handwashing (although Hex is teaching him).

we use something called icontool that does the same..sits in the taskbar with the user name as a title on it, unkillable, maximises into a shortcut bar. Needs a username set by variable though, which ours do automatically. God knows where it came from..we had it under NT4 originally.

Heh..I got a scalextric from one for a few quid..belting fun. In fairness, I just had a "want to relive my youth" moment.. I've got a 120mm fan in the car I mean to use on my desk..Steve has a desk fan, but it's just so "non-geek", I won't consider it. A central 120mm and a couple of satellite "ex case" 80's, an ATX PSU or a hacked USB lead, and job jobbed. Worked last year..

Oh, wonderful.. I've found a christmas pressie there..heh. I have the "massage ball" thing from last christmas, and it's vicious. Also got a USB "Lava lamp". Quite like the heated slippers/gloves approach. Combine that with a 2AA-5v USB adapter, and you have portable heated hands. The dart cannons are OK as long as you get a working one..there's one next door that doesn't rotate properly and fires randomly at things..quite funny..

We run a DWL-2100AP in the office...heh. Got a mildly changed firmware sat on it, with power knocked up beyond spec..works lovely.

Not all estate agents are arses..Nock Deighton is IMO, but Harwoods staff are nothing but friendly. I also pay our council tax...water is up to date (PT had a watercard, I'm going to try and talk landlord into a meter), power and gas are smartcard. Phone was cut off, but that's all sorted now. About the only debts I can see that would be an issue now would be cars or any other junk..
