Hah..we had them in our CAD suite filming lessons with the LaserCamm..always fun. BSODs are quite amusing! When we first went to see our "parent" academy, we were walking round muttering "oh, look..a BSOD...and another.."insert boot disk"..hmm..".. Then they went to give us a "we're what you aspire to be" type of presentation, and bang - on the projector, large as you like..BSOD. We had to chuckle..

Vista is doing my head in..we have a corporate wifi network (just installed), and while XP is more than happy to connect and use it, Vista will connect (WEP based), yet classifies it as "local only", and therefore won't work. We only have a few vista clients, but it'd be nice to have them working..so...has anyone come across this and found an answer? I don't have that much diddling experience with Vista..I did have it on VM at home, but after it munched itself twice I gave it up as a bad job.

not killed under DEP prevention? I've had a few PCs where explorer is killed by Windows itself as "exhibiting virus like tendencies". Makes me laugh every time - it's usually a case of reimaging the kit to shut it up.

I was playing with PEBuilder and PE2USB...I now have my external 60gb drive booting into it for ghosting. Also found a utility in Technet caled "bootprep" that allows XP to boot from FAT32 drives (like pens and compactflash). I now have my Inspiron running entirely of an 8gb GF card with a CF->IDE44 adapter. Did wonder if it'd work on..say..my Cruzer.

lack of Viagra. Not really. I can get into tiny spaces, and am usually happiest lurking in them, so..Sir Bendy worked quite well. Even my web subdomain uses it.

I don't do the whole ghost thing..I originate from Wroxeter, where by rights there should be legions of Romans haunting the place. It was most amusing to see the re-enactments where the centurions can be seen walking down the road eating an ice-cream and looking at their digital watches.. This place is *supposed* to be haunted...the cleaners are scared of it in the dark evenings. So me and the NM put a walkie talkie above a roof tile and did the whole "voice of the dead" thing...cruel, but by gods, it does you good to laugh..

Frozen gearbox???? I'd get that looked at. Oil shouldn't freeze... As to door locks - WD40..and doors freezing shut - you can't beat vaseline. We had snow..and ice. Since it was half term, I just smiled and plugged my solar panels into the car to keep the battery happy, then went for a cuppa and sit by the fire with a book.

try your local branch of Charlies Stores...I have a big grey oil-filled one from there for about £20. I also have a fan heater that was £15. They really don't tend to leak.. I also like thermostat control - you're right, when they get to temp, they draw no load. I'm not using ours yet..the radiators are doing well..although the C/H is leaking onto my garage floor.. The fan heater gets used if I'm in the garage working on the car.

not too bad, TBH. Surprising as I normally start to "shut down" in the winter months as SAD catches me..I didn't even realise it was Friday..my body thinks at most it's wednesday. Next week we have a laptop trolley and 24 laptops arriving, so I'll come in for a day to connect them up to charge and ghostcast the lot, we'll run them up for a login test on the new APs, but..that's it for here. I'm going to spend the rest sorting the house/garage/garden for the winter, getting my car retyred , suspension analyzed and tracked to find out why it's driving like a 3 legged cow, and then..we'll see. Should be quite relaxing.

Can anyone suggest anything here... We have a laptop here on eval..a Stone unit. It's basic, dull, and one of 24 we'll have in a wireless laptop trolley. It works great...my only misgiving is it has one of those wifi on/off buttons at the top by the screen. Now, I don't want kiddies diddling...it's a press key, not a flickswitch. I'm guessing it all comes down to driver control.. So..question for you all...has anyone ever successfully disabled these "hotkey" buttons? Software hack preferably..? It's an Intel a/b/g card if it helps...

We have a literacy specialist on staff who confirms that "yes, the kids aren't great, but the staff are awful!" I should add that if important mails need sending out of this dept, I get to either write them or proofread them first..heh.

We have Cisco 7912 IP phones here, and the bigger versions with the extra consoles in reception etc. All tied back over cisco kit and 10/100/1000 fibre to the Council IT Offices, where the LEA IT setup is based. They hold the call manager switch there. That deals with all outgoing calls. We're lucky though - every school, public building and so on has the same system, and all are interlinked. LEA provided, reliable, free calls across the LAN etc. Very nice.

I declined my free Flu jab this year...it never seems to do much, and I figure my immune system get a continual kicking as it is from the kids...

I'm more of a mech head than tech head in all fairness outside of work..but I drive a bog standard 1997 Astra3 1.6 auto. The only mods it has are LED sidelights, LED dash lamps (hate changing them) and a 4 port USB hub built into it for powering my phone/satnav/MP3 player. Basic as basic gets, but lovely and reliable. I *did* have a talking digidash equipped, electric everything Maestro..that was also a lot of fun.

I had similar on my windscreen with a pigeon...I doubt it survived at 60, and being double whammied by the car behind me in my slipstream when it slid off my roof didn't do it any favours either..

I find they tend to lose them, then come up and insist that "IT had them last". Hence I ISO everything. I can just turn and laugh.

I've started to ISO every disk we get, chuck it onto our TeraStation in categorised folders, with licenses in a text file where needed. The legacy system is on our staff shared area, in a restricted folder called ITAdmin. That has software, utilities, accounts, drivers etc. I make a point of handing the physical media back, as it can't come back and bite me in the bum when they can't find it.
