Hi Guys, I am in the position now of recommending both hardware and solution design for my school (wirless) and i was wondering if i can get some help from the crowd that has and have running wireless solutions. In this pilot i have conjured i have recommended two differing (in price mainly) systems and depending on how much money there is to play with will decided where we go .. so: solution 1 - 1 x 3com wx2200 wireless controller and 10 x 2750 MAP (approx 11K AUS) solution 2 - 1 x netGear wireless controller (only one they sell) and 10 x WAGL102 (approx 5K AUS) Now, as far as the networking is concerned im pretty confident with it. I will simply incorporate the entire WLAN as an purple interface of our backend firewall, allowing access to only the things we give external access to anyway (WebMail, https file access etc) As far as the wireless solutions are concerned neither cater for the magic .n which is arriving any ..day .. month .. year now i guess. Is it wise to provision a solution whilst ignoring the impending N? Ofcourse id love to incorporate all solutions with N capabilties but price goes astronomical very quickly with the 3com MAPs going from approx $400 to $1300 each. Before you ask "well what are your requirements" they are fairly simple, allowing non-school owned laptops access to our external services and our internet service (personal staff laptops/guest access). Please feel free to comment on this idea in anyway you wish, pro 3com anti 3com, ideas on the impending .n, issues with bringing in personal laptops etc. And before Geoff suggests it .... yes i will be planning to implement packetfence here! (I just cant the @#$$%^ VM image to run!!! The disks where made with a vmware versio with more then your version. ideas Geoff?) Thanks alot in advance to everyone. Yeh - like i said it happens. Kids whom have the incentive to ask a teacher to ask us in IT gets cleared (i wrote a liveLogon app in autoIT to see who is on what computer at all times and made a simple click and delete record type deal). Better yet (i think) is when a kid says "umm it says im logged in somwhere else" i can say "so what happened to the computer?" or "why did you press the power button?" and 90% of the time its a spot on inference. Also lets me know when a computer is freezing up etc. Exsactly and exsactly. It does require a supplimentary install but it is so beautifully packaged that its a comprehesive non-event. Ehh i think Synack's response might help you with some other auxilliary issues which i am useless to answer, but i have compiled all my logon scripts (as in AutoIT "compiled") and have them residing deep in the group policy folder strcuture in sysvol. And yes the DB manipulations run at logon and logoff, and computer start up and shutdown. Hope this helps mate! if you didnt have any multiple paths from any two points i *guess* you could safley disable STP on all switches?

im not to sure about the legitimacy of the session model sorry dude, isnt a session (im thinking, no real data to confirm this) only applicable as long as there is a file being accessed on that server. So on the DC (which one? another potential problem in session model) unless i file is accessed i would assume the session would dissapear. I could be very wrong though and id like to hear the result of someone knows otherwise. What i do - do is use is what you correctly said already. A MySql DB to write on logon and clear flag on logoff. Across about ...500 - 600 student logons a day we only get about 2 or 3 students whom have computer crashing/mate pulled the power plug/other non-graceful logoff which i think is pretty fair. Besides the txt file writing, database manpulation methods i dont really think there are other methods of achieving this? Thinking way, way, way out of the box (as i do) you could enable auditing and run scripts against eventLog?? Possible .. and improbable. What aspect of the txt writing, db manipulation is not sufficient for you needs anyway mate?

spiceworks (might be only 2.0 or < ) runs like ass. It will run like rubbish on most anything really, i dont know why but its even on the spiceworks website that it will run poorly with over ... 300 i think nodes in its inventory. Great software but just simply runs like ass unfortunatley.

Hi Gang, Ive a problem with Browse master (and understanding its role in a multi-vlan/subnet environment). I see in my member servers and random client machines how "<> thinks its the master browser, a reelection is bein forced" in the event logs and ive successfully not had to worry about this problem but now (since bringing in 3 new member servers) thinks starting to go abit south as far as timeouts looking for servers within programs. Can anyone please explain how the heirarchy should wrk in a multi vlan enviorment IE wins server should be the browser master, each vlan have it own master? such and such. Any help/info would be great. Thanks alot guys and girl!

i did this differently but achived the same result by: 1) going into the root directory (depending on your folder structure, mine are year seperated) 2) do a dir /b >> namesOfStudents.txt 3) for /f %x in (namesOfStudent.txt) DO cacls /e /t /G %[email protected]:C This ofcourse only works if the home folders are the same as the username.

we came up with this when we first got any usable internet connection and man oh man, it was like we in IT were suggesting that we take all staff's first born children and pillage their homes. The amount of resistance was beyond awe-inspiring. "i dont have time to do that" "what if a site redirects to another site" "i want kids to research - i cant look up all the sites for them" yada yada .. whatever We do actually do now incorporate a white-list, but thats only some false-positives from surfControl (now websense) categories or some "i totally take responsiblilty for the site dude" requests. The rest is all category banned.

you can definatley check out autoIT script for a UDF on screen grabbing. Ive made multiple (because i always lose my .au3's) screen grabbing programs with autoIT Script. Very easy and the .dll it uses allows jpg resoultion changing.

simple question --- is it available to purchase in anyones home country yet? He in Aus i cant get my dirty mitts on one for atleast another month according to ASUS. Yet on their site it seems to be retailing somewhere? If anyone has one please leave some comments/thoughts. In particular i am interested in the battery life for either version of the 1000. im just checkign out "the dude" (first result on google was from the big lebowski haha) and it looks awesome. It does mapping so to speak but i dont think its a 3com network director type product. It is however a realtime system uptime monitor aswell. And it seems to kick ass - ive just got it running on my home network now and it does quite alot and pretty well (so far anyway). Ive very happy i read this post so i could read Mattx's suggestion! Thanks Mattx i smell i "thank" on the horizon.

There is no critical feature that 1) warrants the upgrade process in general and 2) warrants the upgrade of every cal to a 2008 license. 2003(r2) has run perfectly since we introduced a pure 2k3 environment over 3 years ago so why "fix what aint broke"? i ran into limit logon agessss ago when i was running a 2000 domain and it didnt help me cause it required 2003 domains (then atleast). So i wrote my own (primitive) custom job at logon to write a file to a share with the username.txt and then if file exists logoff. Since then im moved to a mySQL db and autoIT logon script that does much the same but with an greater emphasis on detail.

AD doesnt allow annonymous searching so youll have to bind with a proper user, but it can be just that. A user, non-admin/non-special. Good tip ive run into was making that users password not expire, as one day it will expire otherwise and youll scratch your head why ur app has died... or in my case why my LDAP addressBook for all mail clients had become inaccessible.

i am not aware of your school size (or in real terms objects in AD) but 5 dcs will incur quite alot of replication traffic (again dependant on your object modifications and number in total) especially compared to 2 DCs. for 300 computers/1000 students we user 2 DC's

i dont know about tony, but anthony does! (thats me by the way) We filter our staff, one because we pay alot for our web filtering (surfcontrol AKA websense now) so why not use it hey, two because staff shouldnt have free-for-all access to any resource so why internet? three to stop time wasting and the like.
