  1. So the fed government has stopped all the b.s-ing and said enough is enough. With speeds UP to 100mb over the next 8 years. Does this sound extremely short sighted to anyone else but me? I am glad they had stopped all the tendering crap and will get a riggle on. With our compatriots in the UK enjoying in some cases 1GB internet access now, 100mb across 8 years sounds extremely backwards! But before k-rudd reads this and pulls the plug - im happy were atleast going this way.
  2. ahh ... bump? Easy questions for anyone who uses A.Desktop
  3. Hi Gang, I have been using active directory for a long time via a UNC due to the fact that i could never get it to work via http:// - assuming this was not possible i kept on using it poorly all this time. Recently in another thread i made the comment when someone suggested to use Joomla for active desktop that i was not possible - turns out it is! (to use http://) I have had some success in my latest run at this - i have a made a webpage that will do all sorts of app launching and retrieve info via jscript etc etc. I now apply this page not as a active desktop wallpaper but rather as a web item. I now have a new problem - how do you force a web item to take 100% of desktop? Answer - by using a cdf file, which is now not supported by IE7. My questions to thoes whom are using active desktops sucessfully: How do you in gpmc setup a http:// active desktop - yes please spell it out if you dont mind If this is a web item then how do you make it take 100% of desktop to make it a pseudo wallpaper Thanks greatly in advance!

    USB ports

ive had success with weird problem like this with uninstalling some usb devices in device manger. I have also had succes removing keyboard and mouse access by selecting the wrong usb devices. worse case is you lose keyboard and mouse but they will be re-installed at next startup. HTH
  5. Hi Kesomir, I am currently testing out this software - i am pretty impressed with the model as it is. The interface seems to be counter-intuitive (for me anyway) at first interaction - however after a bit of a play i found it actually does make alot of sense. Pricing alone makes this a very valid option. I am yet to test the linux agent.
  6. why would you go this route when you could go service agent install on OCS? To each their own but the service route doesnt require any one to be logged on - but then again how often is a computer not logged on in an education evironment ...
  7. i dont know how the rest of the guys/gals see it here but in most schools (i can only speak for NSW) a professional, or dedicated IT team or personell is largley *frowned* (i think im looking for another word, when i think of it lll edit) upon. Professional IT teams are somewhat deemed a luxury and most schools are run by a teacher whom 'likes IT', is the 'IT teacher' or 'has a brother in IT' - these are all true words spoken by even within the school i maintain! Id like to hear OutLaw's thought as he and i are some what in the same boat, but what does everyone think in the whole? IE how does it play out outisde of NSW? Not to scare you Rabbie at all - possibilities are here ofcourse but i definatley sense a difference in mentality here from the threads i read across eduGeek and obviusly UK situations. EDIT: VB has got the be the worst beer around, yet still un-australian if you dont drink it haha upgrade to a crownie rabbie!
  8. Hey GrumbleDook, Whats the 24 tasks your referring to?
  9. 1 - we dont allow non IT staff to do IT things (obviously dependant number of tech staff available and dependant on school policy IE student immediate satisfaction, no incentive to remeber passwords yada yada yada) 2 - i have tested the wiseSoft as rabbie burns suggested above and it is pretty perfect for that niche task. 3 - you could write your own without too much stress if your up to it.
  10. did u do a scan in safe mode yet? One distinct event that would be telling me if its a virus or instead an incompatibility issue is this: Do you get the error saying "Internet explorer has had to close due to unexpected error etc etc"? If you DONT i call virus. If you DO i suggest keeping an eye on what sites you are actually ging to when it closes - IE is it when flash player is invoked, shockwave, pdf, quickTime ... see what im getting at? HTH
  11. sounds like virus activity to me - do full scan of one computer displaying the symptom in safe mode (if XP/2k) and see what u get. Otherwise its pretty weird and youll probably want to uninstall and reinstall IE and see how you go. Let me know how you go.
  12. hey carl that r1 stuff looks pretty gnarly - thanks for the tip mate
  13. simple - but such an improvment
  14. me clever? yeh ok ill run with that. my usual recourse for USB issues is to wack the usb in to other operating systems. IE Mac, win 2k, heck even 98 if you gots it. I have no real techincal reason that i understand for this but it has definatley worked in the past. Have a try and see how you go.
  15. well i would pre fix that script with an: attrib * -H -R -A /S Which will remove all read-only and hidden flags on files making them accessible to delete. I would also remove ALL archive files from the student home drives as that pretty much means 'hide executable'. so you should be in business with cd vol:\studentFiles attrib * -H -R -A /S del *.exe /s /f del *.zip /s /f
  16. what about a simple scheduled task that runs every 10 mins that simply does: cd vol:\studentFiles del *.exe /s maybe make sure indexing is enabled to get better performance on folder trawling. other then that the tools4ever guys used to sell a quota system that also did file screening. might be much for a temp solution tho. hth
  17. ok - probably shouldnt be taking this off topic but again i dont think this is worth its own thread. When people say does this mean that their entire active desktop is a web site? Or does it mean that youve utilised a "add/delete item" in the active destop? Ive had success with my backwards interpretation of the active desktop/html but not by pointing my active desktop (as in active dekstop wallpaper setting in GP) to http ://intranet but rather adding an "item" as the http ://intranet Is this how others have it?
  18. the fact that i havent got it working makes me think that it does - or maybe something non-standard that i am doing because typing in "http://webSite" isnt something id get wrong. Either way - fantastic news as i simply assumed since i never had success it was impossible haha
  19. snap!! Will have to check that out again - maybe this time with iis.
  20. maybe im flogging a dead horse or maybe im generating moment - i too thinks its a good idea - however how can u get an active desktop to point to a webserver? as far as i know xp will on recognise absolute paths c:\desktop.html or unc paths \\server\share unless im wrong? but ive tried many times to get active desktop to point to http:// without success.
  21. I got a response from ClickView for anyone caring. They provide a Xvid MSI either only after requesting from tech support or just very recently added it as a KB article (or third option - im slightly backwards and didnt see in on their site) http://www.clickview.com.au/downloads/xvid/xvidinstaller.msi Rock and Roll
  22. sorry to resurrect dead thread - but id rather reawaken then start a new one. We too are now on the click view bandwagon, has anyone made progress with the divX deployment? I have tried couple of things but bubkus.
  23. well i think that it boils down to the impending doom point of: edugeek needs to cover costs (paraphrasing) To accomplish this i say this: subscription to all new members of a nominal amount, hell to make it "fair" i would subscribe aswell. But to really be fair there have been guys and girls on this forum since day dot, i know i wasnt around then but i have been around for quite a while now and have been recommending to other techs in that time. Is subscription that dirty of an idea? edit: i couldnt put my point together in my head, ill try tomorrow haha
  24. well the original ssl explorer was absorbed by baracuda systems - maybe check what they got going on. last i checked it was quite expensive - especially compared to the original ssl explorer pricing strucutre.
  25. we had this problem but i got a different - and valid fix. 1 - we dont wds we ghost 2 - on the base image activate any product EXCEPT flash 3 - do not open flash ever ... repeat ... ever on the base image. On first startup flash wll write some license stuff in the registry which doesnt ghost well. 4 - problem solved 5 - thank anthony (if it workss for you haha) i got fix from macromedia at the time, obviously now adobe.
