Not specifying /s gives a prompt. What mechanism are you using to apply? SCCM/Kace/PDQDeploy?

It has been years since I have had need of using a script/batch file to apply a reg file to systems over the network. Typically we use group policy preferences but for this project I would really like to be able to toggle a particular setting using this approach. In my searching, I can't seem to find a definitive answer on the subject of whether or not this is still able to be done in modern Windows. The command I am trying to run without luck is: regedit /s .reg

We decided on Edge as our default browser across campus (for staff and academic labs). Firefox is installed as backup. Since the beginning of this year we really haven't encountered any issues and it is far better than the default browser it replaced (IE11). I actually use Edge for everything at work (and home) and have found no need to install chrome anymore.

Jitsi looks very promising. Thanks for the share!

Looking at Yawcam, it appears as though it isn't designed for two-way video chat or am I missing something?

Looks promising! LyncAutoAnswer definitely appears to have the functionality we are interested in.

Thanks! I'll look into that.

We are in the process of setting up two kiosk PCs near the entrance of our main building. The idea is that with appropriate signage, those in need of information can easily find assistance by using one of these PCs. The main functionality would be provided by a web browser naturally. Currently, I don't believe that we have a good landing page for such a specific use. We have a page with information about counseling, another for registration, another for campus maps, etc. But in my opinion, there should be a landing page with large tiles that allow the user to select one of these topics. There is also talk of making these all-in-one PCs with a built-in webcam for video chat. Management wants "one touch" video chat capability so that a user could reach someone from a particular office during specific hours. Do any of you have "welcome center" kiosks like this? If so, could you perhaps share a link to the web page you designed for such a project? Also, if anyone has any additional tips or suggestions, I would love to hear them! Thanks! Edit: I should also mention that having our web team embed the video chat functionality into the web page seems like the only way to get "one touch" easy. Maybe something like this? https://www.sitepoint.com/webrtc-video-chat-application-peerjs/ We looked at using Skype for Business or the built-in Windows 10 Skype app, but they are both a little too busy UI-wise for use with the kiosks.
-
I am going to push for exactly that. My only concern is that I won't be able to use any kiosk configuration on the PCs as they will need to launch more than a single app (browser and skype vs just the browser). It might be the best we can do however. Thank you for your suggestion. I will look into the Skype Web SDK and see if our web team can make that work.
-
Hopefully this is the right forum for this. We are looking for webcam software to use on some "welcome center" kiosks. The idea is that have two apps running on the kiosks. A web browser and another that launches some webcam software that will automatically connect to one of our staff in a specific department. We use Skype for Business, but the UI is too busy and it would take several clicks to connect. Management wants "one touch" easy. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them!

3s-gtech is correct, you can use group policy to control that behavior in Edge only starting with 1703. For desktop arraignment, you could maybe try USMT or some other profile capture/deployment tool. Perhaps customizing the Default Profile in sysprep audit mode?

We just purchased a number of Windows 10 tablets for our school. I am looking at using either the Windows Configuration Designer or the "Setup School PCs" app. So far, I have had nothing but problems. I created a config in each of the apps. WCD has all the options I would like (setup two local accounts, name devices, setup wifi) while the app only allows wifi and naming. I turned on a tablet and allowed it to present the OOBE screen. At this point, when I connected the flash drive that contained my WCD config, it was not recognized. The flash drive that contained the config from the app was recognized immediately, but after running, it said that it had encountered an error. These tablets are running Windows 10 Home. I also read that the config should be ideally created on the same build version of Windows 10. I am running this on Windows 10 Enterprise Build 1703. The tablet was updated to 1703 and then reset to get the OOBE screen. Anyone out there have any luck with this kind of scenario? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! I'm also open to alternatives if there is a better, more reliable way of going about getting these devices deployed.

I think your right. He needs to be on 1703 to see the new settings.

How did you make your Windows 10 image? What are you using to deploy the image? What make/models are you using? Is it happening on many models or just specific ones?

Hi Tom, We are currently using another solution for delivering apps to personal windows devices, with it, the app is streamed to the device and the only storage that is accessible is whatever the local system offers. We are trying to see if we can get the same result with RemoteApp. Essentially, we only want the users of remoteapps to be able to open and save to their own local device storage and have it be easy to use. Another possibility that we are entertaining is providing a mechanism that would easily allow the user to save to a personal cloud storage account (OneDrive, box, etc).
-
We are looking to implement RemoteApp for some BYOD, but the one issue I can see is how we handle user files. Say for instance, we publish Word. When a user goes to open or save a file, the default location is the RemoteApp server disk. All of their local drives are mapped, but I don't believe, even with adequate training that all of the users would be capable of using/understanding the system. Ideally, we would like to completely hide the server disk and have their system (C:) drive set as the default. Even better if it were their actual documents folder in their user space. I have looked through group policy and done a fair amount of searching online, but so far, have not been able to find the solution. Anyone here using RemoteApp in this fashion? Would love to get some input/ideas if anyone feels like sharing!

Were there important firmware updates missing on those SSDs? Might also check for a UEFI update for the PCs they are installed in as well. Likely you just got a bad batch though.
-
It appears as though we may have found the issue! Endpoint Protection seems to have started flagging the Dell Kace agent on our machines. Adding exceptions into the Endpoint client policy has corrected the issue in our initial testing. Waiting for policy to finish propagating to the rest of our PCs.
-
With verbose messaging, the PCs are stuck on applying user policy. Since there were no changes to policy in either domain, and because of an svchost showing up in every affected PC when using Windows Performance Recorder/Analyzer (from the ADK), which appears to be related to the Microsoft Anti-Malware engine, I'm inclined to believe it is monopolizing the system until it times out and then the system is allowed to finish applying user policy.

For the past few weeks we have been getting a trickle of reports regarding slow system boot times. We are running mainly Windows 8.1, though there have been reports of this from some of those who are still running Windows 7. We have just started our migration to Windows 10 and none of our pilot users nor any of us here in IT running Windows 10 have been affected. We are running System Center Configuration Manager Current Branch 1602 in our organization. We just began using SCCM for imaging a year ago, but we were using SCCM for just Endpoint Protection for the past 5 years. Some of the systems reporting slow boot times were imaged with Dell Kace with an Endpoint Protection client post install task. Others have been imaged within the past year using SCCM, again, with a post install task to install the Endpoint Protection client. At first we thought it might be a simple matter of determining Endpoint Protection client and/or definition version. This is where things get tricky. On one system with the latest definitions, the client was running 4.9.218. The version that we were currently installing for newly imaged PCs was 4.9.219. Upgrading that system allowed the PC to boot quickly for a number of restarts. Then the slow boot came back. On another system, it was running SCEP v4.10. Downgrading that one to 4.9.219 fixed the slow boot for several reboots and all seemed well. Left the PC on at the end of shift. During the night, the PC shut down via a scheduled task. Turned on the next morning and once again had the long boot issue. We have looked through Windows Event Logs, SCCM logs, used Windows Performance Recorder/Analyser, and so far, nothing has been able to explain this. One last thing of note. On one of the PCs that was experiencing the slow boot, I installed the latest version of Faronics Deep Freeze. That system has been rock solid for 3 days with multiple shutdowns, and restarts. It is a Windows 8.1 PC in our child domain. We use Group Policy to control Windows Updates on Windows 7 PCs in both domain, and Windows 8.1 PCs in the parent domain. For all Windows 8.1 PCs in the child domain, we allow Deep Freeze to control Windows Update. I also know that the installation of Deep Freeze disables Windows Fast Startup in Windows 8.1. So while it may be another dead end, I feel like our issue may have something to do with Windows Update policy/services/connectivity, or perhaps Windows Fast Startup (though I don't believe that existed in Windows 7). Would love to know if anyone else has been experiencing long boot delays for the past few weeks. I have done some searching to see if a faulty Windows Update might be to blame, but that doesn't seem likely. Last thing to mention, on a Windows 8.1 system that was having this issue, I uninstalled System Center Endpoint Protection three days ago and it has been fine ever since. The version of Endpoint that was uninstalled was from our post install task (v4.9.219). Through System Center default client policy, it ended up getting Endpoint Protection client v4.7 but it appears to be broken in some way (can't get definitions). We are currently downloading definition updates manually to see if that fixes the issue on that client and then will test shutdowns/restarts to see if the issue comes back. This one may just have other issues in general though since it had been in production for a number of years.

Office 365, which apps did you rollout to your staff and faculty?
disk replied to disk's topic in Cloud Services
I have made the suggestion that we offer the entire suite as many of our users are asking for them and plenty are already using them. As for support, since our project is really centered on migrating email from on-premise to the cloud, we are trying to formalize our support stance. It currently sounds like we are framing the project as email upgrade/migration and as a bonus, these other offerings will be available, however, with limited support. Basically trying to inform our users that they can and may use whatever, but that we will most likely just be providing them with the links to Microsoft's own information/help/how-to sites and videos. Of course, our Help Desk will try to assist them whenever possible, but none of us are SharePoint designers for instance. -
Office 365, which apps did you rollout to your staff and faculty?

I think we are currently leaning towards everything including Yammer. The main reason we are considering leaving Yammer is it appears as though a good number of our students and staff are already using it! I am seeing posts from before we even signed up for O365! I'm guessing this was due to Yammer being a thing before it was included with O365 subs? Just curious why those that responded chose not to roll out Yammer. Thanks!
