@abj: Outlook 2003 is good init? At home, I have the .pst file on my desktop pc and I have got the laptop's Outlook 2003 to use it If it cant find it, it wont make a new one - it asks you to locate it or open one [which is nice as you can just close it of course] A much safer bet that OE Cheers N.

interesting - do hp do deals like that too then? It'd be interesting to know if they could be called out on a yearly contract - which would avoid additional care pack purchases etc. If that is remotely possibly that is lol Sorry to cross post there. Nath.

Are the partners of us techies having a massive shop-a-thon? lol Hope there are some shop's to shop in for her lol Corby got a good town centre? I'll be having the most outragous hair style for the event [yes, it will be that obvious and no, i wont appear like my avatar lol] Regards N.

lol good idea DB And the "bunch of files" earlier is 1.5GB - thats some serious file accessing when a whole class will be using it!! That would cripple the DC [yes, i have no app server lol] My installer script does the job and like you say, a shortcut to each "CD" in their start menu - job done 5min's is a good time i thought for a "copy & extract" of that size [1GB compressed file] Regards N.

lol @ chris nothing that complex no chris. Just one exchange box over two domains (attached to one) and will be reverse-proxied for external access Make ask for the book tho cheers Regards Nath

tarquel replied to SpuffMonkey's topic in How do you do....it?
@spuff: same here - we only go thru the county's proxy lol But they do suggest we use our own - which we may do sometime Regards, Nath -
I'm probably mixing things up here, but with the watchguard vpn/firewall/router system I have, you have to setup IP address on the local range that will be used when a remote user vpn's into the system. [i think] they can't be DHCP'ed [in my case] - only static ones that you assign to each remote user you create. Works fine, tho I only use VNC at the moment - as I dont to attach my personal laptop to the work domain(s) [my g/f is terrible on the internet lmao - joke]. It is some sort of virtual adapter of sorts [cant explain the terminology very well as I've been learning this as i go along lol] I can expand on this if you like, but you might be on about something different lol Regards Nath.

Glad I'm getting my first managed switch tomorrow (or monday) - HP ProCurve 2626 Start of a managed network [i hope] Looking forward to vlan's too [might solve my proxy prob mark ] Nath

I did this - if we are on about changing the ip range on a network - and although all the machines had changed their ip, they were still looking for the old DNS IP [as the server had changed IP too naturally]. I've had to wipe them all - as i've said in another topic [no time to link right now] Just so ya know - hope u dont have that problem lol Regards N.

Anyone know of any good software usage logging software?
tarquel replied to ninjabeaver's topic in Educational Software
nice nice nice.... @Ric: Can this be done thru GP? [i think i have a clue where already but too tired to go and look right now ] @Geoff: Looks good - nice find there geoff. On a similar premise, whats a good syslog setup? I found this on a quick google search: http://www.kiwisyslog.com/ Does the Snare agent (and the syslog) use much resources? i.e. use it on a DC ok or not? Regards Nath Cheers Nath -
[Geoff inadvertantly gave me an idea by his post earlier - thanks lol] Here we go: -ATI- - Official ATI Catalyst [unified] drivers [currently 8.12 - as of Dec 08]: - XP: Desktop - Laptop - Vista 32bit: Add-in - Integrated - 3rd party mod tool - so you can update your laptop gfx card drivers (if they arent part of the approved list): Mobility Modder - DriverHeaven.net [havent tried this much newer version yet, though my laptop does require a clean XP install soon i think There are pretty detailed instruction on the above page, and is possible on both XP and Vista, and even on good ol' 98] - Omega Drivers for all ATI Radeon cards - both XP and Vista version available: OmegaDrivers.net - Home of the ATI & NVIDIA Omega Drivers. ATI -NVidia- - Main Nvidia drivers download selector page: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers - Nvidia GeForce Release [XP @ 177.41 - June 08] download pages: GeForce Release 177 - Vista [32bit] GeForce Release 177 - 2k/XP Win 9x/ME - (81.98) - 9x/ME [why r u using this? ] - Omega Drivers for all Nvidia Geforce [and supported] cards: OmegaDrivers.net - Home of the ATI & NVIDIA Omega Drivers. NVIDIA Any more links - pm or post [the post will be deleted after i add the links just so ya know ] Regards Nath

Setting up home wireless network with MAC and PC..?
tarquel replied to tosca925's topic in General Chat
tosca - can't you just type in the ip address of the router in the MAC OS browser [its been so long i dont remember its name lmao]? You'll need to have a phyiscal connection to the router possibly on first setup tho most likely. I am assuming the same setup as yours [appart from the mac aspect] Sorry if i'm way off - I'm half asleep here lmao Nath -
@DB: lmao how true is that - Eclipse library system for example. - Oh yes, I know how to import the pupils from sims just like that. - Oh, i forgot to mention that of course i know the answer to every eclipse related question you ask me too That was the head sometime last week. Its on a trial and we need it to be tested by the pupils and staff. But of course i wont mention "have you installed it virtually every time I see you" and that there is no installer - its a welsh home grown program that is just a load of macromedia files on multiple CD's [4!!!] and it only takes up ~1.4GB of space btw [managed to create a installer for it !G rar file on the server and a little install script - job done [except for manually installing it on each pc with the script but no problem now lol] definately not a 5 min job lol Glad i made the installer - with a quiet system - it installs in 5 mins from start to finish much quicker than manually swapping cd's and copying to HD etc I only had the CD's for 3 days while doing a ton of other stuff lmao [they had to go back as they had "copy protection on them" - i certainly didnt notice it lol just normal cd-r's lmao excuse the slight /rant - meaning no offense to the head by this btw - its only in gest just the lack of understanding of how true your comment really is DB lol Nath.

tarquel replied to SpuffMonkey's topic in How do you do....it?
certain build of squid not allowing the new MS WU / MU system to work properly [ i think is one of the things mark is refering to ] i know geoff - typical MS eh? [before you comment lol] Nath -
Thanks for the detail tony. I did/do understand the idea behind it - i just meant that either way they still are going to be transfered to the local machine when a user logs on, although I assume that a manditory one uses the local default user and makes changes to the local one when logging on [thus the manditory bit lol] in combination with them not being able to change it right? [sorry very tired tonight lol I meant that if the manditory profile got corrupted and you had all the pupils pointing to it, then all the pupils wouldnt be able to log on until you fix the profile, whereas with roaming ones and (in my case) having seperate individual ones for each user, if their profile gets corrupt then it wont effect everyone else. Thats all i meant. I guess its slightly longer than using manditory ones but still - its all personal preference at the end of the day. Mattpant was telling me that his manditory profile has ended up changing to 100MB lol Hang on - if it is manditory and not change, how does/can it get bigger? I'll stick to individual roaming profiles for now i think lmao Regards Nath.

Not sure of the one i'm getting [as edugeek is blocked at work at the moment [until i sort out my unfiltered/less-restricted ip address] but it could be the same one. I had a feeling it was 20 at the end but the SA bit looks familair think its a 4 channel one - bout £150 as I remember. Regards N.

I take it eejit was refering to MSDE SQL 2000 [think thats the one] and Anywhere SQL [or whatever it is] for personel/finance. At least thats what we have to do until sims/powys SIMS support pull their finger out and get that into sims .net like everything else WSUS shouldnt drain your server's resources too much Get a cheap HP ML150 SATA based server for it It'll cost about 1k or less with the usual bits 'n' bobs and vol license Regards N.

*big eye rolling* Havent we already talked about this? @the people (DB ) not using roaming profiles: so what about when people open office for the first time? I take it that by opening it in the locally created default user (or network one) you achive this but imagine if you forget when creating a new image (or images)? the complaints soon would flood in. Same goes with other apps that have to be run and go through a "mini-config" setup on first run (like office does). Much easier to use roaming profiles I think (for those forgetful and time-limited ppl like myself hehe) - the users dont mind waiting a minute to log on - and they get to customise office a bit too [by way of name etc - pointless but hey, some of them might like it hehe] If a users profile gets corrupted then no problem - wipe it and it'll get recreated on first logon [better than that have to reimage a pc or recreate the network one - imagine the network default user profile not working properly. No one could logon properly lmao] Another thought is that if u have a network one - manditory or whatever - then it would still need to transfer to a pc when a user logs on [just like a roaming profile ] unless it doesnt quite work the same. Just a few pence there Regards N.
